White Sox Take Jared Mitchell with 1st Round Pick
17. Jared Mitchell, OF, Louisiana State
The Good: The best college athlete in the draft by a mile; he's made consistent progress at LSU as far as his hitting, especially in developing a more patient approach and finding his power; he's plus-plus runner and a true weapon on the basepaths.
The Bad: He's far more raw than most players out of a major college, with lots of swings and misses in his game; he is not an instinctual outfielder.
In A Perfect World He Becomes: He has true impact potential, but comes with a fair share of risk.

if you like tools, this guy is it.
i like the pick. the Ks scare me some but he seems to take some walks. he’ll need quite a bit of refinement but this type of pick is a hell of a lot better than the mccullochs and the broadways. take a chance on getting something.

My guess is they hope he might develop a little bit….

yikes....
dude hit .320 and struck out a 30% of the time. not good. but i like the high risk picks. no criticism from me.

Not sure I get that
with the other catchers on the board. Only reason I can think of is time to reach the majors as the other top C’s were high schoolers.

Draft
In a draft supposedly deep in catchers, probably a good move to grab one here. Would have thought the failed Borchard, Owens, Fields experiments would have scared them off the high strikeout rate/great athlete football player. But if Granderson is a real comp, then the pick is a steal.
I haven't studied the draft this time around
but fwiw, Sickels took Mitchell in his Twins shadow draft a spot before the Sox picked. I raelize just cuz Sickels likes him doesn’t mean it’s a good pick, but it’s worth noting.

"I’m very excited for a couple of reasons: Number one, Jared is just an outstanding young man,’’ director of amateur scouting Doug Laumann said of the pick. "He played some baseball in the Cincinnati area where I live the past couple of years, and I got an opportunity to know the people that spent a lot of time with him, and first and foremost, he’s an excellent, outstanding young man. Secondly, one of the things we were trying to accomplish in this draft was to find the high-ceiling, athletic type of player. We certainly weren’t going to sacrifice the ability of some guys just to get that, but as it turned out he was the one guy that we felt was the best player on the board and at the same time fit exactly what we were looking for. A potential lead-off type of guy and a high-ceiling type of guy.’’

well, if the arm plays in right then it definitely plays in cf. it sounds like only time will tell if he can learn the position. he's got the skills now, but lacks the instinct.

yeah
from what i read he’s just raw – he grades out as a centerfielder defensively, biggest issue is the ks

Instinctual actions – in contrast to actions based on learning which are served by memory and which provide individually stored successful reactions built upon experience – have no learning curve, they are hard-wired and ready to use without learning, but do depend on maturational processes to appear.

Kevin Goldstein (6:42:45 PM PT): Trayce Thompson to the White Sox in the second round is a fascinating pick. His father was the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft this year, and his upside ranks with anyone in the draft based on his athleticism, but he’s still VERY VERY RAW and thinks he can turn into an elite pick with three years at UCLA.
