Lisa Stone Loves White Sox Minor League Update

The White Sox have not had a great deal of success recently with their top draft picks. Josh Fields was drafted with the 18th pick in 2004. Lance Broadway was drafted with the 15th pick in 2005. Neither have had much success in the big leagues, with Fields now relegated to a bench role as Paul Konerko's fill-in and Broadway shipped out and not yet maintaining a major league roster spot for any sustained period. So which was a worse pick?

i realize it was just a few innings,

but, for those of you who watched, what were your thoughts on flowers behind the plate?

obviously the throwing error was not good but i’m not sure how much i can chalk that up to a guy who is bad on defense versus a young guy who was trying to do too much (saw a few instance of that in the game). i was impressed, or at least satisfied, with his ability to move behind the plate. i can see why the organization at least thinks he could be a catcher.

I think that the performance of pitching in Birmingham

Speaks well for his ability as a signal caller. Usually, the best pitching talent sticks in AA for a while and flowers has shown that he can handle talent. I watched the game as well and I felt like he called a pretty good game to start off. The reason they went down 2 runs so quickly was because of the throwing error. With a bat in his hand, he looks like a major leaguer.

Castro came in after flowers and gunning down a player at 3rd (who was actually safe), he showed who was the better defensive catcher.

Listening to an interview it sounds as if he is a guy that gets along with everybody, especially his pitchers. He also sounds very humbled (sorta like this other guy I know we call the savior). He should adjust to major league pitching pretty quickly.

My prediction: We will see him sometime in september next season. I dont want him splitting time with AJ because I would rather have him catch a full season in the minors and come up in the late months.

by airnjp on Jul 13, 2009 11:02 AM CDT up reply actions

seems to me castro's silly passed ball cast doubt on who was the better defensive catcher

if you were using this game as your only measuring stick. castro didn’t impress me defensively yesterday, though i know better.

I missed Castro's PB as I was sidetract for the latter part of the game

I guess we cant really assess a catcher’s ability to throw out runners in yesterday’s game considering the amount of pitchers that lacked a slide step or any ability to hold runners on.

My concern at the catching position is a catcher’s ability to call a game. AJ does a great job with our pitching staff in the majors and if he can pass some of that wisdom on to Flowers, I think we will be ok with him behind the plate.

by airnjp on Jul 13, 2009 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

my concern is that he catch the ball.

someone else can always call the game. someone else cannot defend for him.

by larry on Jul 13, 2009 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I didn't watch the game, I did see the error

which, if we’re looking for positives, made his arm look like somewhere in between average and plus for a normal catcher. That’s one thing where sample size isn’t necessary.

That said, my take on the whole situation is that they’re going to give Flowers every opportunity to stay a C until they feel they don’t have to. I feel like Phegley is a solid insurance plan, the problem being that they are both offensive catchers up to this point.

by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 13, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I came away much more impressed

than I was in the few instances I saw him in spring training. The throw, while not good, also probably would have been caught and no error charged by a decent 1B. Carter is pretty much a butcher out there . . .

Anyway, I saw the soft hands that the Sox had talked about, improved skills at blocking . . . and generally, it seems very feasible that he can stay there. Especially considering the lack of defensive ability that we have seen behind the plate in recent years. Encouraging few innings.

Dan (Chicago): So many of my fellow white sox fans are so high on Dayan Viciedo (I assume because of the success of Alexei Ramirez) but I can’t help but think that this guy is a borderline non-prospect. .302 obp and .357 slugging is miserable

Ben Badler: I think I said it before, but Double-A was an aggressive assignment for the guy. Let him play in the Carolina League, and if it ends up looking like too conservative of an assignment after a month or so, bring him up to Double-A. But right now I’m not sure he could even hit Carolina League pitching based on his Double-A performance.

I can't help but think

this is very short sighted and continues to be biased by the ridiculous talk of him breaking camp with the Sox in spring training. Progress has been made this year and he would still be very young for AA next year. He had an abysmal start which I guess I am willing to discount somewhat for numerous reasons . . . followed by 200+ much improved ABs over June and July.

i have zero concerns with his progress.

look up any number of prospects and mlb players and look at what they were doing at age 20, overwhelmingly at lower levels. he still has the same tools and potential as he did six months ago. that’s what you look at for just about any player his age.

He has been playing at such a high level in Cuba that the obvious choice was to give him a shot in AA. I don’t see how someone could complain about Viciedo making the Southern league all star game and the futures game as a 20 year old.

larry (chicago): Will Tyler Flowers stick at catcher?

Ben Badler: I think the odds of him sticking at catcher are better than they were coming into the season. He won’t be an above-average defensive catcher, but I think he’s good enough to play back there at least early in his career. Then again, my threshold for catcher defense is probably a little lower than most people’s.

i didn't think this one would be such a blow-out

after all, fields has been a below replacement level player for his career and isn’t looking like he’s planning to turn that around. broadway at least is a replacement level pitcher. interesting to see the aggregate analysis of the picks.

White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry

by larry on Jul 14, 2009 8:38 AM CDT up reply actions

you can pick up a replacement pitcher off the damn sidewalk

Fields at least hits dingers sometimes, and has a chance of becoming a starter on a bad team. Or a platoon player on a decent one. 40 HR power doesn’t grow on trees, and someone will give him a chance to find it. It isn’t like he can’t hit a 94 MPH heater, he just needs to find the best timing. Ozzie and KW just can’t afford to let young players work it out. He doesn’t seem to react to pressure well anyway. Fields vs. Anderson would have been a better one.

by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 14, 2009 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Fields had a good half of a season.

While that doesn’t justify the poll here, I think most people just remember that Josh Field at one time played like a solid major leaguer for a few months when he originally came up. Broadway while he’s been successful in his few spot starts, has never had as much success as Fields over that long a time period. Niether one has been good so I don’t know if it really matters, but Fields did look promising at one time.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 14, 2009 9:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know if Broadway will ever do anything in the majors

I think Fields can be more than he is now, anyway. I can’t say that for Broadway. Whatever, there’s not much in arguing over who’s worse.

by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 14, 2009 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions

i simply find the result interesting.

from the comments i read on this site and others, many do not distinguish between what was a ‘bad’ pick at the time of the draft and the eventual career, or lack thereof, of that player. fields was a better pick. higher upside. potential for a good player but also potential for a bust. broadway had little upside. like any pitcher, he could have blown out his arm but he’s pretty much turned out as one would expect – backend pitcher. fields has been a negative value player and, frankly, whether he “can be more than he is now”, it’s unlikey he’ll ever be much more than replacement level since he can’t play defense and his bat, even optimistically, isn’t going to carry him. so the two players have essentially ended up at the same point. i should apparently give some credit to the community for realizing that the result isn’t everything.

jason grey on t-flow

from espn insider:

Arguably the most impressive hitter at last year’s Arizona Fall League in a league with quite a few of them, White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers was another player at the Futures Game with big-time power potential. He continues to swing a hot bat at Double-A after the South Siders acquired him in the offseason trade that sent Javier Vazquez to Atlanta.

Flowers is hitting .302 with a .445 on-base percentage and 13 homers this season as his OPS flirts with the 1.000 mark. A big 6-foot-4, 245-pound specimen, Flowers is not a free swinger, and he shows good patience in waiting for pitches he can drive thanks to a good pitch recognition. He still occasionally struggles with off-speed stuff away, as his front hip has a tendency to leak out in his swing.

“It’s a timing issue,” Flowers said. “I do need to make sure I always see the ball before I got and commit to a swing, because I do get in the habit of cheating a bit, especially against pitchers that throw harder.”

When I first started watching him, I thought he was a bit stiff and his swing was a bit too long, but then he really started putting good, consistent swings on the ball. He can put up a good batting average to go with his pop.

Always known as an offense-first catcher who has seen time at first base, Flowers continues to make small strides in improving his defense behind the dish, but he still has work to do. He has soft hands and has earned praise from pitchers for his game-calling abilities, but he struggles with his footwork and his throwing needs to be more consistent. It’s possible he could stay there over the long haul, and the White Sox think he can. That obviously would be the more desired outcome for his fantasy owners, who always are looking for power-hitting catchers. Regardless, his bat will play if he has to move to first.

by Ryno on Jul 14, 2009 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

When they say struggles with his footwork

Are they talking more about getting out of the crouch to make a throw to get a guy out stealing, or being able to move his feet left and right to get in front of wild pitches, or just all around?

Sources tell NewOrleans.Com/Sports that Mitchell is not injured, that the White Sox simply gave him the time to re-charge his batteries, rest a bit from the non-stop grind of LSU football and baseball, and to get his feet on the ground before debuting. He has been taking batting practice with the team. He is eligible to come off of the disabled list Thursday and should debut for the Intimidators then.

Quentin last night in SAL league for Intimidators vs Sand Gnats
Rehabbing Chicago White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin put Kannapolis on the board first in the opening inning with an RBI-double down the third base line. Quentin ended the day with a fly-ball out to left making just two at-bats on the evening before exiting for a pinch-hitter in the sixth.
The Sand Gnats (9-9, 44-44) will face 2005 Cy Young Award winner Bartolo Colon who will join Quentin tomorrow for a rehab start with Kannapolis. Savannah counters with Kyle Allen (5-5, 4.54 ERA) toeing the slab for the 7 p.m. start.

White Sox prospect Tyler Flowers was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte.

Acquired from the Braves in the Javier Vazquez trade last December, Flowers batted .302/.445/.548 with 13 homers and 43 RBI in 248 at-bats with Double-A Charlotte. The 23-year-old Flowers is quickly gaining steam as one of the top prospects in the White Sox organization. Questions about his defense remain, but he was one of two catchers chosen to represent the U.S. Team in Sunday’s Futures Game. He went 1-for-2 with a strikeout in the game.

A White Sox infield in two years of 1B Konerko, 2B Savior, SS Missile, 3B Morel?

Sounds like Morel is a polished defender and he hits for power. I know its only at the high A level, but might he be able to produce for the Sox in the future? He is a 3rd rounder so its not like he came out of nowhere. At the beginning of this season, I thought Josh Fields could at least hold his own at 3B for at least a few more seasons, boy was I wrong.

by airnjp on Jul 14, 2009 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Some thoughts on Morel

I like the kid alot, I think his glove is going to continue to be a huge asset and I hope while he climbs through the system he doesn’t loose his ability to steal that would be a great asset for him and make him a very dynamic player at 3B.

I realize John Sickels wrote previously about Morel possibly being a Joe Randa type; and I think that comp holds a lot of water I also think this is good jumping off point in terms of comps: a meh, good, better and best situation for Morel is something like this in my eyes: Joe Crede , Joe Randa, Edgardo Alfonozo and Jeff Cirillo.

by beautox on Jul 15, 2009 3:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I remember that Sickels comparison to Randa

Nix has started 3 games at 3B this season. Maybe Getz could be shopped and we could move Beckham over to 2B. Let’s get him some experience there at the major league level. I really like Getz, but he is preventing Beckham from playing a position he might be better at.

by airnjp on Jul 15, 2009 5:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Getz isn't preventing anyone from anything

there’s no reason to shop him even if he can’t start. Players with his profile should be able to make good utility men. That may be his upside.

by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 15, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Getz is going to be a solid 2nd baseman for a long time

The kid has really given us all that can be expected for his first major league experience. He’s a solid glove, great at turning the double play and our best base stealer/base runner. Give him his 700 at bats and I believe he will hit .300 and be moved to the 2 hole where he belongs.
Nix is the perfect utility man since he can play just about anywhere and gives us some pop as a late inning pinch hitter or a late inning pinch runner is we need some speed.
I would much rather see Beckham at ss and move Ramirez to CF or 3rd base.

Sox win, cubs lose.....what a wonderful world!

by picktoclick on Jul 17, 2009 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but he's not produced like a MLer so far.

It isn’t like he’s going to ever be a superstar, so there isn’t much lost by using him in a utility role. If Getz can step it up, good for him. But you shouldn’t expect the Sox to balk in getting or calling up someone they think is better.

by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 17, 2009 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

he's back up to replacement level.

so there’s that.
