And, if anyone cares, the Futures Game is supposed to re-start at 4:30 (now 5:30) - how many errors can the apparently promoted to AAA Flowers commit?

At the break, my glass is half full (usually with Sprecher...try it sometime)
I can’t say with any certainty that the Sox can/will win the division, but I can say I’ve mostly enjoyed the ride so far. They’ve gotten a hell of a lot out of guys that could have been awful – namely Pods, Gordo, Getz, and Nix.
I’m not saying they’re tearing it up (well, Pods, maybe), but they are playing above average based on their experience, seem to be able to get clutch hits, and have given the Sox a speed element that we haven’t seen since Rudy Law stole 77 back in ’83.
The starting 3 (maybe even 4 – if Contreras continues to drink the blood of infants) pitchers are solid and the bats have come alive, showing that they can come back in games that seem to be blowouts. They don’t necessarily win, but they don’t lay down and die either. The bullpen could be better, but who in the division has a stellar pen?
Regardless of how healthy he is, when he returns, even an 80% healthy Q! will be better than the Wise/Anderson combo offensively, and will be a long-ball threat, which is always a bonus.
Barring injuries (fingers crossed) I see no reason to doubt Paulie and JD will continue to hit and are each on pace for about 100 RBI each. The only true disappointment (although he does seem to pull off clutch hits as well) is Thome, whose numbers could be better for a DH…although I was surprised to discover he has a .400 OBP, which is tops among the starters.
The Sox will probably make a solid run at the division thanks to the parity among the top 3 teams. The true test will be when they have to face exceptionally talented teams like TB, BOS and NY. But if they can take series vs. teams they should beat and split with the rest, I think they’ll be fine…with or without any “big moves.” And if they come up short this year, as Timbuk 3 once sang, “The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.”
"To play for me you have to have some balls." - Ozzie Guillen (6/30/09)
5th starter and D will be the achillies heal...
I also like that the team can manufacture runs more instead of waiting for the long ball all the time. Besides Q!, we have remained relatively injury free (not counting Colon)…we need that to continue. We also need the Tigers starting pitching to remember that it is the Tigers starting pitching.
"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."
by BobbySouthSide on Jul 13, 2009 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
Clayton will probably get one more start to prove himself. Not sure what the plan is if he blows it. Poreda I suppose…although I’m not sure how long the “stretching out” process would take.
Again, who has a phenomenal #5? Everyone has the same issues, so it is likely to be a dogfight until the very end. I highly doubt anyone is going to run away and hide in that division.
"To play for me you have to have some balls." - Ozzie Guillen (6/30/09)
Not sure if Richard is even a capable #5
I just want him to get into or through the 6th without giving up 6+ runs. I want him to give us a chance to win, but just as importantly I don’t want the bullpen getting used up during his starts.
The OF and 3B defense is worrisome.
"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."
by BobbySouthSide on Jul 13, 2009 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions
I always had that same worry about Javy Vazquez
He’d be fantastic for 5 innings and then the bottom would fall out.
I give Gordo a big break at 3B because he’s a college SS learning 3B at the MLB level on the job.
And…you’re right…a defense with Q!, Pods and JD isn’t going to scare anyone, but those 3 bats can make up for a lot of gappers that are going to get through.
"To play for me you have to have some balls." - Ozzie Guillen (6/30/09)
I am not coming down on Beckham
but the D is going to be scary from his spot for the rest of the year – but it is what it is.

Exactly.
A secondary benefit to these young guys is that they are also pushing guys like Fields and Anderson to (at least try to) perform better.
"To play for me you have to have some balls." - Ozzie Guillen (6/30/09)
I really doubt that Fields and BA weren't trying their hardest.
Them failing is due to them not being good, not a lack of trying.
If anything it probably makes it more difficult for them, for most guys its a lot easier to perform when you are gauranteed a spot and can just worry about playing and not if you’re going to still be on the team tomorrow.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 13, 2009 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions
You know people find different sources of motivation.
Some guys like the challenge, some guys like security, some guys play better angry, some guys like peace. Seems like Fields has actually picked up his game a notch (at bat, at least) since Becks arrived (or maybe it’s only because he’s not a 3rd baseman and likes 1B/DH.

A few thoughts:
1) I am really unimpressed with Poreda….not only did I know he had shit for breaking stuff, but, where is this mid-90’s heat? By no means am I giving up on him, but I wouldn’t hesitate to trade him if we get good value for him 2) I would have to be bowled over to trade Beckham, Danks or Flowers, as hopefully they’ll constitute three-quarters of our middle in the coming years 3) Something tells me Buehrle could be in for a bit of a stuggle in the second half….I guess just normal regression to the mean stuff 4) I certainly would dangle Jenks to see what he might fetch.
How did you not know his breaking stuff had issues?
It’s the reason he was still in the minors.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 13, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions
I did know.
My comment is strangely worded….but, yeah, I knew it needed work.
He's kinda funky too....
is he what you’d call a short-armer? I don’t know, maybe it actually helps him because it’s deceptive?
I'd agree with 1
From what I’ve seen, I don’t think he’s even the second coming of Matt Thornton. I expected more from his fastball. I can’t imagine Poreda’s trade value is very high. He hasn’t looked like much more than javier lopez at this point.
I think the Sox are going to have trouble making a deal, as no one is going to give up anything of value unless the Sox trade Beckham or Flowers (or both).
This cracked me up:
ESPN.com’s Buster Olney believes the Phillies should let the Blue Jays take three A prospects, one B prospect and one C prospect for Roy Halladay.
Does PHI really have 3 A prospects? That’s an insane price — I’m not sure there’s more than zero teams that have that kind of minor league talent.

the sox are 2 and 3 after we raised the stone pony from the ashes of playgirl
those pics may have offered amusement for those of us who spend 6 hours a day on SSS, i’m inclined to think it’s a curse in disguise. prior to 7/9, the sox could have won the division even with mediocre talent and effort. but the sox will fail because of the stone pony has come to avenge us after being awoken from relative obscurity. the stone pony adopted other forms in the past to foil the sox including various no-name rookie pitchers and nick punto.

beckham just misses dave cameron's mlb trade value top 50
Gordon Beckham, 3B/SS, Chicago – 0.2 WAR
A year after getting drafted, he hit his way to the majors. If I was completely sure he’d be a quality defensive shortstop long term, he’d have made the list.
Fielding (UZR) at a -1.9
Minor league post-ish question: is fielding something that tends to improve over time (short of a complete position change)? or have guys basically plateaued by the time they’re in the majors?
guy's learning a new position
there’s definitely a transition cost…though i don’t think it’s been covered in research yet. you can find Beckham’s TotalZone D stats at minorleaguesplits.

I completely blanked on the position switch, which obviously is a huge factor
But even accepting that, how much… whaddyoucallit… progress can you expect from a player defensively as they mature? It doesn’t seem like Flowers really has a future catching, for instance: is that a virtue of a general leveling out? something symptomatic to that position? a shortcoming on his part? (I’m a little hesitant to bring up Flowers just because it may be a more specified response than the question probably demands, but it still illustrates the general idea I’m digging toward.)
i'm not actually sure what the age patterns for defense look like
for infielders. for outfielders, speed is the biggest component of defense. and speed of course peaks around 24-25. for the infield i’d guess it’s more like hitting, in that the experience factor in the tools + experience = performance equation is much more important. you can definitely check out fangraphs to get an idea of age versus performance for defense.

OT: for the OPOS
The Orlando Sentinel reports that the Magic have decided to match Marcin Gortat’s five-year, $34 million offer sheet, extended to him by the Mavericks.
This is somewhat unexpected, as Gortat averaged less than 13 minutes per game behind Dwight Howard last season. His agent said he is “very, very disappointed.” Orlando now has impressive frontcourt depth, with the recent addition of Brandon Bass, and they’re willingness to spend might make them the favorite to win the East again. For the Mavericks, it’s back to the drawing board.

Holy Shit.
DeVosis buying himself a title, he thinks. He witnesses a lot, and he is richer than God (I know who does his estate planning, and he is a billionaire in every financial sense), so I bet he’s thinking “What the heck. Make your move.” while alive. He was on death’s doorstep a few years ago (bad ticker) and probably sees each day as a gift.
I’m surprised, but not surprised. $ isn’t what motivates this guy. A legacy does.

PS Don't be surprised if he is traded.
