It was a neat Sox moment.
For those concerned that the throwing out the first pitch at the ASG is frivolous – especially now – the Presidential first pitch is a tradition dating back to 1910. It has endured through numerous crises/wars.

I’m a huge presidential history nerd, as you can tell :)
Its not the frivolity that concerned me, it was
how poorly he threw the ball. A spastic 12 year girl would cringe over that looping pitch.

BA's top rookies
19. GORDON BECKHAM, 3B, 22, WHITE SOX
Beckham required only a 59-game stopover in the minor leagues on his flight from Athens, Ga., to Chicago. All he did while on his apprenticeship this season was lead the minors in doubles while playing every infield position but first base. The White Sox expect the natural shortstop’s maturity and energy to translate into immediate results. And so should you.

that's about right for offense.
the primary difference, of course, is that WAR includes defense and position. i always consider there to be sample size issues with defensive metrics but one can pretty easily adjust for that since the calulations are broken out for the various components of WAR.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Do you think WAR has much value at the team level?
At least as an indicator of expected performance? Seems like a lot might get lost in combining so much aggregate data. I see its strength for measuring players but scanning the Fangraphs data for team WAR I’m a little stumped.

dr. jaffe prescribes:
Chicago White Sox: Sox center fielders Brian Anderson, DeWayne Wise, and Scott Podsednik have combined to “hit” .215/.280/.279, producing the majors’ lowest OPS at the position by 58 points. Rather than continue to hemorrhage runs in an outfield lineup slot, they should pry Cody Ross loose from the Marlins; he’s arbitration-eligible and thus soon to be out of favor in Florida. While he’s no master of the strike zone (67/21 K/UIBB), he’s got enough pop that moving to homer-friendly US Cellular Field could make him a star.

Well the thing is Pods wasn’t really playing CF until a week ago. How is that fair? Pods a guy hitting well over those numbers is now playing CF, so that statistic is meaningless. They’ve already replaced that production.

What are you proving? That the guys who used to play CF are bad? What does that have to do with the second half? The guy who is playing CF now has been good this year.
That’s like saying we need a new third baseman b/c Fields, Betimet and Beckham combined were bad. Who the hell cares? The other two aren’t there anymore, so what they did before is meaningless to your future moves.

I meant if you combined Wise and Anderson’s season numbers w/ Dye’s it would make Dye look bad too. Not that our RF has been bad. White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Just like the statistic at CF makes no sense.
You should compare what Pods did in LF. Because he is the one now playing CF, so what does it matter what other people did in CF? They aren’t there anymore. See my comments about third base.
It doesn’t matter what position he was playing defensively. He hit well, and it’s his numbers that you should be concerned about, not what BA or Wise did. They aren’t going to play anymore, so why use what they did as your guide to your future moves?
by Grinder in Training on Jul 15, 2009 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions
you seem highly confident in the guy who has been out for two months and can't even make it through full rehab games.
i’m sure we all hope that quentin can play and pods continues to hit and all of the sox’ problems are solved. past experience suggests that’s highly tenuous.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I don’t think Q is going to put up monster numbers, but at the same time I don’t think it matters if he does in regards to what this guy is arguing. If it’s Q half the time and Nix the rest of the time, and Pods in CF, the production is still better than what he used for the basis of his argument for making a trade.
It’s stupid to use statistics of players that aren’t playing anymore to argue your point that someone should make a trade. If he doesn’t think Pods will be good, then he should argue that, not that BA and Wise are bad baseball players.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 15, 2009 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions
"aren't playing anymore"
like i said, you’ve made quite the assumption regarding playing time. good luck. i hope you’re right. i’m wondering, though, if the plan is to play nix in LF, why haven’t we seen him, you know, doing that the last couple months.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Pods was there
From the time he got back from injury basically and actually starting to play well, Pods already had locked it down.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 15, 2009 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions
so when they moved pods to CF - you know, the guy you say is going to be playing there from now on - why is it that i've seen wise in LF?
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Nix has been there too. I don’t know what to say, Nix also played 2B to spell Getz, he’s a utility guy and Ozzie always gives his entire bench starts. He’s clearly been moving guys around to see what he’ll do when Q returns. That’s included Nix in LF, and Pods in CF. Considering Wise can’t hit and Nix kind of can, one would think Ozzie will continue to go back to Nix on the days that Q can’t play. (which I expect there to be many)
by Grinder in Training on Jul 15, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions
so you're guessing about the future
and you’re criticizing a guy for using the past. i don’t agree with what you think is going to happen with playing time. and i’m sure jaffe doesn’t either. the future is going to look far more like the past than your version of things.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Maybe not this year.
More probably next year, yes. Maybe Pods is on a roll for this year. It happens. No one predicted the stellar first half, either, which does not negate its occurance.
So maybe Jaffe should stick to a more probable present outcome (BA and Wise sucking donkeys) and let Pods lie for now. Maybe.
We’re a pack of a-holes.
by rhythm on Apr 14, 2009 1:45 PM EDT
and maybe he should actually assert 'pods isn't going to be good going forward' and/or 'Q isn't going to be playing enough to keep pods in CF for long'
if thats what he means to say, instead of using other players stats to imply anything.
and maybe he should write a fifteen page article about every team.
or maybe people should use their heads a little bit. i’d frankly consider it insulting – and otherwise a waste of my time – to be reading someone who feels the need to tell me that scott podsednik is not a good baseball player.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
No one needs to see that.
That isn’t the point. Pods is bad, but he isn’t Wise or Anderson bad, and those are the guys whose stats he uses to make his argument. If he wants to say Pods is the bad player who should be replaced, then just use Pods career numbers, that’s one sentence and would easily get his point across that you think he is trying to make, not 15 pages.

I believe you guys are all missing the point
He’s stating a fact: People who have played center field for the White Sox this year have put up that line. It isn’t a shot against Pods, when he’s played center field, he’s contributed to that line.
by Off the bus running on Jul 16, 2009 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions
We all get that, the people who played CF in the first half we're very bad.
No one is confused about that. Pods has only played 15% of the time in CF, and he on the other hand has not been that bad, and going forward, he is expected to play the majority of the time. So why weigh down his stats by guys who are much worse at baseball than he is (even if he does regress to his career line).
If you trade for Cody Ross you aren’t replacing Wise and BA’s production, you are replacing Pods, and most of what he did, took place in LF. If you want to say Pods is bad at baseball, as Larry suggests he is implying, so be it, it doesn’t take 15 pages, it takes one line to say that. He didn’t make that point anywhere in his argument. All he did was lump 15% of what Pods did into one of the worst platoons in baseball. You add 15% of anyone’s stats to what those guys did and they would look bad.
It doesn’t matter what BA and Wise did, because they aren’t going to be doing it anymore. They’ve already been replaced.
Just like it would be safe to say if you combine Beckham, Fields and Betemit’s numbers at third it would look like we have a worse third baseman than we actually do. What Fields and WB did before Beckham arrived doesn’t matter. They aren’t in the picture anymore, so their statistics are meaningless for your future decisions.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 16, 2009 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions
suggesting someone needs to make the point that scott podsednik is bad at baseball is like suggesting someone needs to make the point that the sun is going to come up tomorrow.
i note that you haven’t mentioned that in any of your posts, either, and since it’s going to be tough to play baseball – or do anything – without the sun, i’m going to consider all of your arguments on this topic to be useless.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
How is that comparable.
Pods has had a pretty close to average career and an above average season. There’s no reason to believe he will put up the numbers Wise or BA have this season, that he uses to make his argument for the trade. His career line is a lot better than what BA and Wise have done this year.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 16, 2009 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions
Cody Ross
would be a much more valuable asset in CF than Scott Podsednik. That’s the point Jaffe’s making. He’s better offensively, he’s better defensively. Five good weeks should not blind you from the fact that Pods is not good. Not good offensively, not good defensively.
by Off the bus running on Jul 16, 2009 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't disagree with that.
He looks like quite the baseball player going by his stats, I haven’t see him play much on TV but I don’t doubt for a second he is much better than Scott Podsednik.
Pods isn’t good, I have never said that. I said the statistic used is complete bullshit to make the argument for the trade.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 16, 2009 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions
His point was
the Sox have a weakness at CF, which they do. Cody Ross is a trade candidate that the Sox could acquire to fill that void. That statistic should glaringly point out that we have a huge void in our lineup coming from center field.

Ross or someone like Alex Rios (if he's actually available) make a lot of sense
the Sox brass can’t really be expecting a whole lot from Quentin (both in terms of games played and production). From reading the discussions it looks like he’s still very gimpy. This team is going to need four legit outfielders (legit being somewhere around average or better), especially if they’re serious about trying to go for the Central this year. Wise and Anderson won’t cut it. Podsednik and his 2009 pixie dust seem like a fine fourth outfielder, but with Quentin’s health issues that role takes on uber importance.
Since the article is behind the subscription wall...
and I’m too cheap to get a subscription, does he offer any suggestions as to whom the Sox could trade for this Ross fellow?
Alex Rios would not come cheap and I would prefer to hang onto top prospects than deal for someone for whom the Sox may have a series of inexpensive replacements in the next few years.
I want a cheap, league-average stop-gap, dammit!

Got to agree with that, since it was his kid who decided his fate.
Should’ve had a better prepared estate plan. ;)

All-Star Game re: Maddon-Wakefield
Red Sox ppl are bitching about Wakefield not appearing and complaining that Maddon said he wouldn’t play before the game. I can see saving him as the long man in case the game went to extras after last year’s game and the ’02 fiasco.
Plus, who would he have pitched instead of?
Buehrle, Greinke, Jackson, Hernandez or the 3 closers?
I don’t get the issue. Am I missing something? He was borderline to even be there, in my opinion.

Most annoying opposing fans to visit The Cell
1. Red Sox
2. Yankees
3. Cubs
"I do think that there's a different quality to what used to be Cominskey Field vs. Wrigley," President Obama told Bob Costas during an interview that aired during Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game.
I agree with this comment
and find that they are the most annoying fans to deal with in general (although 2 and 3 can change positions depending on the circumstances)

While you guys were bickering, I was reliving the '05 WS on DVD. I tell ya...what a season...great way to pass these wretched baseball-less hours. Fuck, I hate the ASB!
Just [expletive] Fuck It.
Sucks that we don't get a game tonight either
I’m hoping my NY bretheren take care of Detroit this weekend. In a perfect world, we’ll be 0.5 out on Monday.
