Come on, Pete, be his apologist.
“At least he didn’t refer to it as Wrigley Field. And he’s a stand-up guy – he could’ve decided to not refer to the Sox at all. True Sox fan. And a busy guy. He was NOT loaded – he was tired. And excited.”

Look, he's better than McCain. The best guy won. No sour grapes.
I am disappointed in him, though. The old AFL-CIO schtick he’s throwing down is beneath him. He can do great things. Instead, he’s style, not substance, playing to his base. I was hoping for more.

It's all an illusion
He’s much more neo-liberal anti-union than you’d think. He’s pushing charter schools even though all of the data suggests that charters actually cost more, select kids and do LESS for them than neighborhood schools.
School reform needs to happen, but this is hurting kids just to get rid of the union.
by xian on Jul 16, 2009 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, it isn't.
Kids’ education is getting worse, not better. The unions need help but are like the NRA in their inflexibility (“once the nose is in the tent, the whole camel follows!!!” BS). Good for him. And what I do respect is he’s not being hypocritical – his own kids go to private school. He knows kids need help and few can afford THAT kind of cost/benefit ratio.

You are right
the ‘all style’ part is only when he has a scheduled event and teleprompters in place. Otherwise, you end up with "cominskey field’ type remarks . . . and I would not call it no substance . . . but certainly less substance than one was led to believe prior to January.

I let go of nothing.
Today’s WSJ about Illinois schools in a national context:
And speaking of charters, the Chicago study says they “provide one bright spot in the generally disappointing performance of Chicago’s public schools.” The city has 30 charters with 67 campuses serving 30,000 students out of a total public school population of 408,000. Another 13,000 kids are on wait lists because the charters are at capacity, and it’s no mystery why. Last year 91% of charter elementary schools and 88% of charter high schools had a higher percentage of students meeting or exceeding state standards than the neighborhood schools that the students otherwise would have attended.

Did they provide the stats that charter schools have bad retention rates
Oh wait, since they are privatized, they dont need to provide those stats with the other public schools.
They cannot seem to keep teachers for any longer than 5 years maximum at a time. They think teachers can just be substituted in and out to deliver effective curriculum. Their goal is to get “fresh” teachers and burn them out within a few years. This “Chicago” model is to try and recruit the best and the brightest and if that doesnt work, get rid of them.
by airnjp on Jul 20, 2009 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You can try and skew the stats,
but it’s disingenuous. Tell me schools don’t need help. Then tell me charter schools don’t help. Please. Keep it simple.
And who doesn’t want to burn out the best and the brightest young kids? Law firms, brokerages, accountants, and the freaking Peace Corps do the same. So do schools. Take that idealistic energy. Is yours still apparent? If you’ve taught for 20 years, I bet not.

Hey, Pres. Obama, maybe now that Sears Tower has been remaned you can upgrade your information re: The Cell:
It’s become common for professional sports teams to sell the naming rights of their stadiums and arenas, as Chicago White Sox fans can attest, when their team’s stadium, Comiskey Park, renamed U.S. Cellular Field in 2003.

“Bonzo” stuff. Too old. Dumb. Etc. Most of it justified, some not. I don’t listen to the pundits, so I don’t hear the hating. I will say, suprisingly, my wife and mother-in-law don’t like him (the Israel thing, maybe) and don’t “trust” him.

Anyone remember Ald. Burton Natarus?
He called it Cominskey Field/Park all the time. Soldier’s Field too. There were TV stations in town that spelled it “Comisky.”
Here’s the funny thing about John Kerry and “Lambert Field” – that is a big screwup. Especially when you say it in Green Bay. During a Bush campaign appearance several days later, Tommy Thompson gave him all sorts of shit.
Tommy Thompson, of course, hosted the Packers in Madison after their Super Bowl win, and kept calling Mike Holmgren “Steve Holmgren” to his face.

I wonder how Obama would take being compared to the
great Burton Natarus?
But as a loyal Democrat, Natarus avoided challenging then-Mayor Richard J. Daley and the Party organization on issues such as corruption, favoritism, racism, and police brutality. He was a reliable vote in favor of the Mayor’s budget, and of any zoning changes requested by other Aldermen. The ordinances he crafted often included language that allowed the Mayor to give tax breaks, subsidies, and sweetheart deals to favored business interests. He was consistently supportive of property developers in his ward, and pointed to the vast array of big new buildings there as his accomplishment. In turn developers donated heavily to his campaign fund.
Maybe he’d be pleased…

Seriously, do you realize how many 11-14 year-old boys (and perhaps girls as well), whose parents don’t receive the Victoria’s secret catalog at home, burn those images in their brains so that they can rub one out before they go to bed??
Depriving even one of those young minds the chance to fantasize about banging a Victoria’s Secret model, while he/she lay in bed at night pleasuring thyself, should be a Federal crime.
