I've Got 99 Problems But White Sox Minor League Update Ain't One
Continuing the draft pick theme, maybe we'll get a closer poll this time. Brian Anderson went 15th overall in 2003. Josh Fields went 18th the following year. Each had tools - "Brian is the closest we have to a five tool player" - but that has not translated to skills.

Quentin or Flowers?
I heard on one of the broadcasts yesterday, maybe it was TV so it was bogus info since it was a national broadcast, that Quentin had soreness in his foot again. Is that true?
If he isn’t having soreness, why he is not up here.
What about this reason:
Quentin, Poreda, Richard, Anderson or Fields, another prospect (Carlos Torres?) for Halladay and Rios or Rolen

Jared Mitchell, OF, White Sox (Single-A Kannapolis)
Mitchell has been nothing short of on fire since the White Sox made him their first-round pick in June. He followed up that selection by winning Most Outstanding Player honors during the College World Series, and after signing for a $1.2 million bonus, a three-week layoff did little to slow him down, as his pro career began with his going 4-for-9 with a pair of doubles in his first three games for the Intimidators. A monster athlete with a tremendous ceiling, Mitchell was seen as a bit of a project due to his football commitment in college, but his development could go quicker than many think.

john ely gets mentioned among southern league FIP leaders
at fangraphs:
3.52- John Ely | RHP | Chicago AL
Ely has had a very consistent, albeit not-so-flashy, season. The right-hander has average stuff so he allows a fair number of hits, but he limits the walks and does a good job of keeping the ball in the park. Ely is also durable, which could make him a solid No. 3 or 4 starter in the Majors.

shoemaker making a bid for k-town
is there any rationale behind assigning guys to bristol vs. great falls? pitchers’ league vs. hitters’ league as far as i can tell, but is there a pattern to who gets assigned where?
shoemaker hitting the way he has in bristol is definitely impressive, even considering his age.
Chicago White Sox
Released: RHP Justin Kuehn
Placed on 7-day DL: RHP Levi Maxwell, RHP Sergio Santos
Reinstated from DL: OF Jared Mitchell, OF Lee Cruz, OF Sergio Morales
Mitchell, the 23rd overall pick this June from Louisiana State, returned from his DL stint and went 4-for-9 with a pair of doubles in his first three games for low Class A Kannapolis. He signed a bit later, on July 7, because he was otherwise occupied during the Tigers’ run to a College World Series title.

brady shoemaker and bristol
Bristol Sox (Chicago White Sox)
WEEK IN REVIEW: The Sox went 2-4, falling 10 games behind first-place Elizabethton in the West Division.
WHO’S HOT: It’s still OF Brady Shoemaker, who stretched his hitting streak to 21 games and holds a .424 batting average. A 19th-round pick in the June Draft, he has a hit in every game he’s played. His lone hit Monday at Danville was a double in the seventh inning.
CRUISING AGAIN: LHP Joe Serafin was back in a groove after allowing his only run of the season July 13, throwing six shutout innings at Danville on Sunday. He has allowed one run and 17 hits in 29 innings this season while accounting for four of the team’s 11 victories.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “He’s real quiet in the locker room. He takes care of his business and goes about his work as a professional. It’s great to have a guy like that in the clubhouse and in the middle of your lineup.” — Sox manager Ryan Newman to the Bristol Herald Courier on OF Brady Shoemaker.

White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
nice to see a rationale for why he's still in kanny
still dominating with just the fastball and curve, though: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 9 K, 0 ER tonight.
remenowsky a perfect inning with 2 Ks. mitchell 2-3, 1 BB, 1 R.
that's not a reasonable rationale.
starters who have one pitch spend less time in A ball. starters in this organization who fit that profile have been promoted ahead of carter this season. how much time did aaron poreda spend in kannapolis? zero. i’m not comparing the talent of the two but you should promote players based on their abilities. carter has shown that he is far, far too good for the sally. let him face some batters who have a slightly firmer grasp on the strike zone and see what they think about carter’s curve.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
yeah, i'm not totally buying it either
but it was nice to see someone in the organization acknowledge that it’s weird that he hasn’t been promoted and provide some sort of explanation for it.
as for the need to develop a change before moving on, i would think that the challenge of a higher level would provide more incentive to work on the change in order to get hitters out. seems like there’s just as much risk in developing bad habits against inferior competition as there is in potentially struggling for a while at a higher level. but i’m sure there’s some sort of logic behind it. at least i hope so.
the Sox have shown a willingness to put players with coaches whom they think
are particularly beneficial to them. see Perdew and Poreda.

If he can figure it out quickly, he’ll rocket. He might even start next year in Birmingham if he continues this pace. He’s not ready for the majors a year from now.

Birmingham has a proven CF right now in Jordan Danks
Danks or Gartrell would need to be promoted to AAA, opening up a spot for Tyler Kuhn in AA. Kuhn would be promoted and Mitchell would then get his promotion to the Dash. Thats the only way I see it possible. It is quite the longshot.
If you want him to be more like Beckham, than he stays in Kanny this year. Plays in the AFL. Has spring training with the sox. Designated to AA after spring training. Moved up to AAA after tearing up AA. Moved to the Sox roster by June 2010 for tearing it up in a week of AAA.
This would be difficult considering Mitchell is 1 year younger than beckham was in this spot.
But he is toolsy.

If his Kanny stint tells us anything, he should rocket through the system next year if he develops that change grip. Whether we need him by then remains to be seen. Maybe we don’t have him at the end of the month.

they’ve got quite a few starters (i.e., more than 5) now if you include poreda, torres, egbert, whisler, harrell and marquez. they also have the issue of these guys not being lined up in an orderly rotation so, like today, you’re going to have matt zaleski, who isn’t a real stater, set to start.
as i said a couple days ago, it’s going to be interesting to see how the sox juggle their staff at the major league level and that obviously has an effect on the AAA staff, as well. there’s going to be some guys SOL. i know who i’d pick.

Is it ok to get excited about Hudson yet?
He’s not the explosive prospect McCarthy or Gonzalez was. Still, I can’t help but feel like this one was meant to be.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 24, 2009 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions
Maybe
Coming into the draft in 08 he was projected as a solid relief prospect with an average fastball and plus slider. Scouts said his mechanics were flawed and was an injury risk but had good potential.
Current reports say he has tweaked his mechanics and has improved velocity on his fastball (92-94) and improved his command. He has a wipeout slider which is his best pitch but still needs to work on his change. He has a get me over curve that needs a lot of work.
Sounds like he has been getting some good coaching in our system but he has been moved along very quickly. He probably finishes out the year in Birmingham and could be a mid to late 2010 call up if he keeps progressing the way he has so far. Unless of course he is included in the Halladay deal………
Sox win, cubs lose.....what a wonderful world!
I dont think Gonzalez was ever on the
same level as McCarthy . . . Hudson has much better makeup and better stuff than Gio has ever had.
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

If he did the person who awarded it was misinformed
His change is average at best, probably below average. Fastball is average, command is below average as his ability to keep the ball on the ground. The K rate is very good but his Minor League K/BB rate is “only” 2.54, which is good, but not elite prospect good. He was always overrated by Sox fans.
