Is Morrissey Serious With This?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-19-morrissey-jul19,0,3342726.column

Let’s put on our GM cap and start with shortstop Alexei Ramirez and pitcher John Danks. I know: a steep price. But worth it.

Losing Ramirez would be painful, but there’s always pain involved in this kind of deal. The Sox can move him (Beckham) to short and put Josh Fields at third.

I make it a point to not read anything Morrissey writes

This is the same guy who isn’t sold on Jay Cutler being a good thing for the Bears over Kyle Orton

I thought the whole point on getting Halladay was to address the hole that is the 5th starter. Trade Danks among others for Halladay and the sox are still without a reliable 5th starter

He's been awful for years

and become totally unreadable. Like a fool I starting reading two paragraphs of that article cause it had to do with the Sox and couldn’t go any further – like staring into the sun.

Coach says he needs more toughness. I gotta step up.

muckraking for fun and profit

note the bolded part.

What has to be weighed is whether the future would be destroyed for a guy who might spend only 1 1/2 seasons in Chicago. But the better question is, what future? Is there a gleaming future on the South Side that’s the envy of all the other teams?

according to the blogger who authored the tripe cited above, if an organization’s future prospects are not the envy of all of the other organizations it competes with, it follows then that the organization should “sell” the future to engage in a “wash” today.

alas, the article did what it was intended to do- drive page views and sell newspapers. professional sports writing 101, the more incendiary, controversial, and divisive the prattle, the better. the flip side is everyone silently nodding their head in agreement.

Morrissey is reduced to making foolish trade proposals

He is screaming for attention because he knows he’s working for a dinosaur of an industry and has nothing intelligent to say. Don’t feed him by clicking thru to his stories. I can pick out 90 per cent of his stories by the dopey headline. Stay away and he’ll eventually be gone.

If you can't use a reliever on back-to-back days

he’s pretty useless. That contract is an albatross.

Coach says he needs more toughness. I gotta step up.

most appearances by a reliever are not on 0 days rest. you may as well use him to the greatest effect.

Sox offensive stats, last 30 days

Per Fangraphs:

Leads AL in team batting average (.302), doubles (54), HR (39).

Second in AL in runs scored (54).

Pitching numbers aren’t nearly as rosy.

by 67WMAQ on Jul 19, 2009 6:31 AM CDT reply actions

You think Satan is still handing out contracts? Maybe Quentin can get in on that action.

At this point – a merely OK Carlos Quentin (a Q instead of a Q!) is still an upgrade over whatever 9th place hitter (Wise/Anderson) the Sox have been trotting out in his absence.

by 67WMAQ on Jul 19, 2009 8:48 AM CDT up reply actions

More like a rough week for the pitching

That’s why it was really nice to see Buerhle get them back on track. The FIP is still 4.06 last 30 days. Richard is just brutal right now. The hitting has been scary good. Yes CF numbers suck but at this point so what?

We joke about “savior” but Beckham’s bat at the bottom of the order has rounded things out.

Remember when folks were claiming the Sox would have 3-4 bats below .700 OPS in the lineup? Wrong.

Greg Walker rules! (kidding of course.)

by Tdogg on Jul 19, 2009 8:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Well I was joking about savior until I looked up his stats

He’s now our 4th best hitter looking at OPS.

Is it still the fourth inning?

Special thanks to the following people:

Darin Erstad, Luis Terrero, Andy Gonzales, Alex Cintron, Bret Prinz, Ryan Bukvich, Dewon Day, Jerry Owens, plus slumping PK, JD, AJ, and Tadahito Iguchi.

You guys made Gordon Beckham possible.

by 67WMAQ on Jul 19, 2009 9:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I remember being pretty pissed teh Sox won a few games at the end to move down a spot or two

it’s worked out though.

David Cameron (not a whole lot of respect for his work, but whatever) but Gordon right on the outside of his top 30 tradeable assets. Like most, has no doubt he’s going to hit a ton, but has some questions about where he’ll eventually end up on the spectrum.

by madvillian on Jul 19, 2009 9:17 AM CDT up reply actions

That's a pretty good problem to have.

I remember much of the talk around here after 2007 was that the White Sox organization was on a Baltimore Orioles style slide of old players, unmoveable contracts, and mediocre prospects.

That was a long time ago, wasn’t it?

by 67WMAQ on Jul 19, 2009 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Sox are 4th in the AL in ERA and 9th in OPS

If they can move into the top half of the hitting stats this 2nd half that should be enough to push them to 85-88 wins, which might win the division.

The only player that’s really been a huge drag on the offense has been Wise, and hopefully with Q’s return next week he never sees the field more than once a week.

The pitching has been about as good as can be expected I think, the one thing that could make it really good of course is a trade for another starter.

And yea, Beckham has given a much needed boost to the bottom of the lineup.

by madvillian on Jul 19, 2009 9:05 AM CDT reply actions

To solve the #5 spot,

why don’t we move Clayton back to long relief and let Poreda be the #5 starter. And don’t give me all the stretching out crap. bla bla bla

by Ahillock on Jul 19, 2009 10:19 AM CDT reply actions

my theory is that they really want Richard to string a few good starts together for the scouts

then waive him around like bait. Richard is still young and he has some upside as a cheap back end starter of solid lefty reliever. Of course, with Colon coming back and Count pitching like a man possessed he might not have many more opportunities if he doesn’t pick it up soon.

by madvillian on Jul 19, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Wise is trying to go for:

Lowest BA on the team
Lowest OBP on the team
Lowest SLG on the team
Lowest number of RBI’s on the team
Lowest number of R’s on the team
Lowest number of hits on the team
Highest level of crappiness on the team. Get it done D. Wise.

by Ahillock on Jul 19, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Because...

Apparently Wise is getting a stab in the back of the clubhouse – there is no reason this guy should be on the team. Virtually anyone in the minors should be able to replace him at this point.

Remember when "Cuban Pride" meant something...

by Brush Back on Jul 19, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd like to think they are "reverse-showcasing" Wise

So they can demote him without anyone claiming him (although frankly, who would?)

I’d like to think that.

Is it still the fourth inning?
