Thome and 600

Not to get ahead of ourselves, but with Thome slowly creeping up to 600 homers, I can't help but think whether or not it will happen in a White Sox uniform.

Thome is currently at 554 homeruns with 13 this year.  Thome will have more at bats in the second half of the year with no interleague play so it is reasonable to predict that he will hit at least 15 more home runs barring injury.  That would put him at 569 career home runs total.  So going into next year he would need 30 home runs +/- 3 to get to 600.  The possibility of that occurring is good, again barring injury.

Thome will be a free agent at the end of this year.  Would it be worth resigning him with the extra incentive of him hitting #600 in a White Sox uniform?  I don't think the possibility of getting 600 should factor into Kenny William's decision.  It is just an interesting scenario.  His chase of 600 would bring in some money.  Maybe if he got 600 in a White Sox uniform, he would decide to go into the hall of fame as a White Sox considering the relationship he currently has with the Indians and their fans.

Also, would there be any teams out there willing to trade for Jim Thome since he is only signed for this year?  I have not heard of any rumors of Thome being traded, so I am not sure if it is even a possibility.

the extra incentive of having thome is the high OBP and decent power numbers

you know, like mashing taters…and severely damaging baseballs

takes some real stones for the one certifiable cocksucker on here to jump into this convo.-mm

just to note,

the HOF, not the player, determines which team is on the plaque.

and i don’t think thome gets to 600 next year so, unless you’re planning to make a 2 year commitment, it shouldn’t factor.

i seem to recall Fisk chosing the BoSox over the ChiSox
Fisk was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000, choosing the Boston Red Sox cap for his plaque, although he played for more seasons with the Chicago White Sox.

-wikipedia but still

Could Mr. Fancy-Pants larry Himself have one wrong?

damn nm
Carter had expressed an interest in having his plaque adorned with a Mets hat — the team he won the 1986 World Series with and now works for — but said he wasn’t upset at the Hall’s announcement Thursday.

the HOF rules say a player is to be shown on the plaque wearing the hat of his "primary team". the HOF chooses which the primary team is.

of course, a few players, like fisk, have more than one “primary team” because they played a significant portion of their careers with more than one team. thus, the HOF usually asks the player in such situations which team he wants on the plaque and defers to that choice.

i don’t think it’s particularly likely that the white sox would be seen as a primary team for thome.

I disagree

I was in cooperstown a couple of years ago when George Foster was trying to get inducted to the hof. I remember seeing him wearing a mets cap, I then asked him “If you do make it to the hall of fame, would you go as a Cinncinnatti red?” he just said no and if he did that he would go as a met. I then went to his career numbers on thebaseballcube, and saw that he played…
3 seasons as a giant
11 seasons as a red and part of the infamous big red machine
5 seasons as a met
1/2 season as a white sox player.
The only reason I’m guessing he mighht want to go to the hall of fae as a met is if the reds did somthing to him

to say I disagree with the part about the HOF choosing the team.

I wish we could keep him..

But I just don’t think that Kenny will keep him unless Jim agrees to a signifigantly reduced salary (which is possible). Let just be happy that we got to see him set all these records in our jersey – it probably sucks for the Indian fans. I know I hatted seeing Frank playing for the As and the Blue Jays.
