I thought Wise would be the guy to go
simply because they keep saying Q! will be pulled for defense late in games and keeping BA made more sense because he’s better defensively and Pods could move to left.
But now that we know Wise has Joe Borchard power he has to be kept.
Don't forget his stellar .243 OBP.
Ed Farmer: "Is it raining in here?"
Steve Stone: "I've made an egregious mistake."
Neither can hit worth a shit
The question is defense. I used to think BA was a lot better. I’d also like to think the Sox could pick the better player between the two better than me.

sss warning with trying to use uzr for less than a half season's worth of defense
I was under the impression that you needed 3 years worth of data to make a solid conclusion, so it may help to look at the UZR #‘s for the last 3-5 years and see who comes out ahead. I haven’t taken the time to do so.
I understand that there is little difference between the two, so choosing between Wise and BA really isn’t that big of a deal, but this rubs me the wrong way given BA’s flashes of hitting the ball to RF and CF as well as my impression that Ozzie’s long-sustained displeasure with BA had too much to do with the decision.
I’d love it if KW acquired a 1.5-2.5 year solution to the CF problem so that we wouldn’t have this “conversation” any longer. I really hope Danks becomes a solid CF (at least until Mitchell pushes him to RF).

Yeah more relevant for projecting out.
We are just talking about the facts up to this point. BA’s fantastic D is more of a myth at this point. If we look at him next to Dye yeah he’s fantastic, but in a race with my 6 year old, I’m Carl Lewis.
"I'm just here to provide street cred and a rosy outlook"- translation - unemployed life coach
well past your prime?
and when did it become a requirement to have a 6 year old to comment at sss?
Cashing checks and having sex.
Okay, I just tallied the product of the # innings in CF and UZR in CF for BA and D Wizzie for the past 5 years of data and then divided by 150
because I wanted to weigh the UZR numbers with respect to the innings played, and BA wins the UZR defensive battle 32.6 to 1.43. BA has also played more innings in CF, 1911 to 408.
I’m not exactly sure what this means, as this exercise has increased my # of questions as opposed to make a definitive statement, but I get the sense that BA is better in CF than D Wizzie.
Also, the WAR / innings at this point: BA 0.1 / 466 and D Wizzie 0.0 / 260.33
So, like, yeah, they don’t look very different, but I would still go with BA because I think the Sox need all the help they can get in order to win the division.

As UZR and WAR are cumulative I think number of innings is important no?
Just curious in general for the future. Not for this nonsense.
"I'm just here to provide street cred and a rosy outlook"- translation - unemployed life coach
That's what I was trying to do, but somehow fucked it up
As and example, it didn’t seem right to be adding an UZR/150 of 86 in 13.3 innings to a UZR/150 of -13.8 in 144 innings for D Wizzie.
So for each playa, I took the raw CF UZR numbers for the last 5 years, multiplied by the # of innings in CF for the last 5 years, added up the data and divided by 150. 32.6 and 1.43 don’t look right to me, but that’s what I ended up with.
Bhoov seems to have been on the same wavelength and picked up the slack below.

Not that Q staying healthy the rest of the way is all on Ozzie, but this will be a bit of a challenge
at least for 2009, some Q > no Q, so what’s his best use? I’m thinking — aim for three PAs per game, pulling him after the third (or fourth, depending on the context of the game) PA. He’s also gotta sit or DH every third game. Even this might be too much playing time for his foot/ankle to handle…
Is his injury one that is going to require post-season surgery or just an extended period of inactivity?
surgery doesn't usually help (if ever).
1.5 months of relative inactivity didn’t seem to help much. will four? this is one of those lingering injuries that just sticks around for a long time and, often, magically disappears one day. hard to say what will help him. other than stretching, of course.

shouldn't you weigh that for the # PAs?

...take your hobbit circle jerk to another thread
by larry on May 18, 2009 8:58 PM PDT
Why?
I don’t care what Wise did 4 years ago for this moment. I’m more interested in their recent history, which is why I said hunch. Wise has super sucked with the bat this year but between AAA and the majors last year put up a decent line. If he continues to blow, he’s an idea. Release him and bring up BA.
"I'm just here to provide street cred and a rosy outlook"- translation - unemployed life coach
past results are indicative of future return?
but yeah, if he continues to suck, BA’s just a flight away.
I think the “who give a fuck because they’re about the same” camp is right, the difference between the two is so slight it won’t matter.
I’d be all for trading for Ross, Spilboroughs (sp?), or Marlon Byrd, but I have no idea what it would take for any of those options and I don’t like the idea of dismantling the minors just when they’ve started to build them back up. This is why I’m not a GM, I suppose.

The Sox don't owe any favors to Wise

I figured they were letting Wise earn the spot by playing him all weekend...

Bucky's 5th Quarter. SB Nation's Wisconsin Badgers community.
Agree with TDogg. Anderson's defense
is overrated. His UZR in almost 2000 innings is 1.1/150 games. Almost exactly league average. Less data on Wise, but he’s probably about league average. Neither of them can hit. I’d take wise too. Either way considering playing time the difference won’t be more than what 1-3 runs (.1-.2 wins) the rest of the year.
That said, man our outfield defense is gonna be ugly. The offensive upgrade from BA to Q is massive enough to make this the only real option, but man it could be ugly.

but wise is absolutely TERRIBLE. I’m going to boycott games where his name appears in any lineup outside of the 16 inch softball league where he belongs. Wise is not better than Anderson at anything. They should have DFA’d Wise if he is out of options. There is not one team in the Major Leagues that would put a claim on a 31 year old career minor leaguer with .211 career average and a .252 career OBP. Speed does not matter if you are not on base!!! BA is 27, has a career OBP of .288, SLG of .364. Hits righty.
Wise is 31, has a career OBP of .252, SLG of .373. Hits lefty.
There is a third option … he’s 28, has a career OBP of .319, SLG of .305. Hits lefty. He is, I believe, available.
Can anyone name this mystery ballplayer?

we get q! back and i have to skim through a thread full of ba/wise talk?
fuck you guys! we’ve got last year’s mvp of the first 5 months back and the discussion is about the douchebags who were trying to stay on the team?
how about some projections for q! for the rest of the year?

.393, 49 HR, 114 RBI.
Oh wait … you said the rest of the year, not the rest of July, didn’t you? Ok, take those numbers and multiply them by 7.

From your mouth to God's ears.
If he puts up that line from here on out – we’re all gonna be well.
I assume the 50 games are because of scheduled days off, and not because he hurts himself again.

And I have nothing to do tonight…

BA’s has chance after chance for years to no avail while D-Wise was a pleasant surprise for us. Plus D-Wise looked good for two games before he got hurt which is…three more games than BA has all season.

Interesting tidbit on Value of Halladay with respect to
The teams that have been mentioned the most often in the Halladay hunt (and their respective PECOTA-based playoff odds through Saturday) are the Red Sox (91%), Yankees (78%), Phillies (72%), Angels (67%), Cardinals (56%), Tigers (39%), White Sox (31%), Giants (30%), Brewers (27%), and Rangers (21%). Using ballpark estimates which should be pretty close to the true value, adding Halladay would respectively increase their playoff odds by varying amounts: Red Sox (98%), Yankees (92%), Phillies (89%), Angels (86%), Cardinals (78%), Tigers (63%), White Sox (55%), Giants (54%), Brewers (50%), and Rangers (42%).

I think that's why I kind of came around on dealing for him
even before I saw it spelled out like this. Not for Beckham, but I’d listen if I was KW or be creative if I was KW.
