Poreda officially optioned to Charlotte, Carlos Torres called up to spot start for John Danks tomorrow. Apparently Jim and I weren't the only ones to watch the AAA All-Star Game. Don Cooper:

He's got a good fastball. I think I saw it the other night at 92-94 in the Triple-A All-Star Game. That night I also saw him locate his fastball, throw some good curveballs and some cutters. The consensus from everyone around him is that he's the right choice to come up here and fill in Danksi's spot [Wednesday].'

dotel was ready since the 7th...

Ozzie should have put him in instead of warming up Jenks again who pitched 30 the night previous.

I’m not too sure about how Ozzie is handling the bullpen lately…Dotel is in the dog house? he hasnt pitched since before the all-star no?

by el paulito on Jul 22, 2009 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

really? Dotel over Jenks

in a save situation? Talk about hindsight.

Understand the 2nd part

but I seriously doubt many people were on the . . . “I want Dotel closing this game out instead of Jenks” bandwagon BEFORE the 9th inning happened.

it wouldn’t be that surprising for someone to want to go with Dotel there.

That was my point with

the hindsight comment. Jenks is the guy for save situations in the ninth inning, end of story. He has blown 3 saves this year, 22/25 for the year. The only way he won’t be out there is because of excessive use . . . and 28 pitches the night before does not qualify. That being said, tonight may actually be the case where you see someone else should the situation arise . . . for just the reasons I mentioned.

As soon as he put that first guy on I wanted Thornton up

Not really hindsight in this case

Jenks pitched a long inning the night before and didn’t do well in that outing either. Good spot to give someone else an opportunity for the save there.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 22, 2009 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where in the hell is Carrasco? He was on fire when the rest of the bullpen was on fire in the Macdougal sense....and I can't recall more than one bad outing of his this year (maybe I'm suppressing).

Ozzie is being way too formulaic for my taste this season re: bullpen.

Before Jenks was even warming up last night, I said, “I’d prefer to see Thornton close it, if he chooses an arm by any other name.”

Just [expletive] Fuck It.

Was at the A's game last night

I took great pleasure in booing Punto, Gomez, Mauer, and Spahn. Sure, it didn’t work out, but oh well.

Sweeny looked like he took a poor route to the ball on the run-scoring double, but I guess when they’re hitting the ball that hard, you can’t really expect great things.

Crede had a couple of nice doubles. Even if he’s on the twinkies, I still like him. Not to get all SSH, but here’s a pipe dream (layup): I like the idea of bringing Crede back next year on a 1 or 2 year contract with Che at SS, Savior at 2B, and Getz at utility. Sure, it won’t ever happen, but I’m putting it out there for you, my fellow SSSers, to ridicule.

How many times does he have to tell her to make him a sandwich?

The guy is hungry. She obviously likes him. Why not just make him a sandwich. Does she want him to go hungry?

If he doesn’t get his sandwich, he might not survive. Then she just has a dead man laying in her bed, a far worse situation than if she would have just made the sandwich.

Which makes one wonder

Ozzie is so set on lefty/righty matchups (hence we get to see Nix in the 9th), yet in ths case we don’t see Thornton – an ideal situation to use him to close against a team that struggles against lefties (especially after Jenk’s last 2, now 3 outings)

Remember when "Cuban Pride" meant something...

by Brush Back on Jul 22, 2009 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah - i would have used Thornton as well

thornton came in and cleared the Liney trash the night before…he should have been put in with bases loaded again…

Maddon was throwing his entire bench into the 9th there – what a manager! I could see why Ozzie likes Maddon so much…awesome use of his staff.

i really like how that team is put together

lefty heavy outside of Upton and Longoria, plus Zobrist who can switch hit. And they all play great defense. And they have nice bench options. As position players go, I’m not sure there’s a group better than the Rays have.

If we didn't have an inferiority complex

then what would we have? Anyway, everyone thinks we’re assholes, I don’t know why. Cubs fans, on the other hand, get a free pass.

And if the Padres fans claimed that the Padres were a better team than the Dodgers every year despite much evidence to the contrary(I know it’s a different thing, roll wit me) then Dodgers fans would have reason to not like them much. It’s one thing if the Royals fans are bitter, they can make funny jokes, but there wouldn’t be such hubbub if someone made the simple task of asking one of us to participate.

And when Kalkman(who I was starting to like more, really), or whomever, willfully neglects the presence of one of the contending teams in the division for this “Division Roundtable”… well, it’s certainly not going to endear us to our AL Central rival fans, or Kalkman and Co. for that matter, not while the Nationals-lite fan rips us while we’re unrepresented. So yeah, anyone would have an inferiority complex in this case, but I don’t think it’s that. I just think it’s some complex that makes people think we’re assholes for no reason, per se. I can think of at least three people who could have easily participated in that. Colin has a better relationship with Sky than many here, Larry I know has made some contact in the past, I would have done it, even. I don’t care if they don’t want us participating, I just want someone to acknowledge that it was a case of negligence or that there was some other reason other that we’re all “insufferable” by classification. That completely eradicates the productivity of the discussion and saps the merit of any said discussion.

well my relationship is somewhat tenuous

i could certainly see him thinking i suck/am a blowhard/won’t shut the fuck up/etc. i mean of all the SBN baseball sites, who’s taken the most pot shots at BTB so far? SSS, afaik. i’ve always said i read their shit because it’s usually good. and i dare say since we started ripping on them it’s been better. so if that means not participating in a roundtable, i’m pretty sure SBN is better off for it anyway.

i do think the vestiges of KW being the butt end of the Moneyball joke has a lot to do with many saberpinions on KW and that contributes a lot to said complex. kenny is weirder than most GMs. normally, if you’re good, it’s because you’re on top of your saber shit, getting good value from the market, etc. and when you’re bad it’s because you’re an ignorant Joe Morgan type. or Steve fucking Phillips. the Swisher trade doesn’t help that, but it seemed like we were at least starting to get credit for Danks, Floyd, Thorny, etc. if there’s one thing you can’t fuck with KW on, it’s pitching. check out fangraphs sometime. the Sox have consistently been amongst the league’s best in Starter WAR and pitching WAR in general over KW’s tenure.

Well, when I approach BTB, which I do

It’s often to offer a conflicting viewpoint. And I’m sure they’re all cool with it because it stimulates discussion and I’m not one to be over aggressive. This isolated incident is confusing to me, because I’m not sure anyone else has much of a relationship with them if any. Like I said, if they feel they can justify this more power to them, but they have no defense when we feel cheated.

Sox reportedly made a rejected offer for Halladay
According to a major-league source, the White Sox did more than inquire about Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Roy Halladay, putting together an offer that was shot down.

Whether that happened or if Sox general manager Ken Williams was still trying to make a deal happen before the July 31 trade deadline, Williams wasn’t saying.

Pods was the true goat. Jenks cost us only 2 runs… Pods misplayed a ball badly in center field which became the only run Richard allowed… also the brutal bunt attempt to erase the leadoff double by Beckham and then the strikeout with bases loaded and one out… so he cost us 3 runs… IT’S SCIENCE!

i haven't watched enough games lately

but unless getz has figured out how to turn on a fastball, he’s going to be stuck in the .270/.320/.370 doldrums. he’s a pretty good basestealer though, i’ll give him that. and he’s been on a charge lately, throwing some doubles into the mix. i didn’t see him hit, so i don’t know how “real” they were.

Nix, otoh, has pop and a better glove. it’s too bad he bats right handed.

.270/.320/.370 with decent baserunning

Is pretty serviceable for your 8 or 9 hitting second baseman. If we don’t make the playoffs, I don’t think it will be because of him.

i think Nix is in the .240/.310/.420 range

and he’s a better defender, so I’d prefer to see him out there based on what I’ve seen from Getz. If he’s shown improvement of late, then the marginal difference between the two (being so small) probably says play the younger guy.

Eh, we would have been pissed at Uribe from some angle if he put up this production

Getz and Nix, for all we know, could be playing to the best of their ability. To tell you the truth, I like Getz better long-term. He has better plate coverage and more speed, as well as being a plus baserunner. Nix is dead-pull all the time and can’t lay off the pitch low and away.

No.

I was thinking about this last night, and thought this might come up. I’d equate this with Robinson Cano’s rookie and soph years. Sure, the Yanks had (have) a more potent lineup, but I think it’d help the young man to stay lower in the order. He’s got enough to think about in the field, learn all the new pitchers/hitters’ tendencies, etc. Let him effin’ relax a bit, and let’s see if he can get through the 2nd time against the same pitchers before we declare him an immediate success.

One more thing.

Have you noticed Jenks trying to mix in the change-up more and more? He didn’t have great velocity last night. His margin for error is shrinking, and it’s really evident when he goes on back-to-back days.

by dantesox on Jul 22, 2009 11:39 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Is Jenks a little bit unlucky this year?

His HR/FB ratio is 16.1% and his BABIP is .323

While it sucks that he’s been terrible the last two days, I’d be more worried if his strikeouts were down (but he’s missing bats – a lot more than last year), or walks were up significantly (up .2 walks per 9 after last night).

It just seems when guys are making contact they are making solid contact against him this year.

Is it still the fourth inning?

by vince_ on Jul 22, 2009 1:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

extremely unlucky lately and too many walks

his BABIP in the last 30 days is .428!

ERA 6.00/ FIP 2.71

12.00 K/9 – 5.00 BB/9

Says it all.

isn't it possible that the babip isn't entirely "unlucky"

in that with his increased walks, he may have lost some control, hence hitters getting better pitches to hit?

Law on Sox
“It’s not impossible, but it’s not likely that they’d outplay the Tigers by four games (they’re three back in the loss column) the rest of the way. Detroit is the better team on paper, and the White Sox’s offense is a major weakness, one of the worst in the AL. Their lineup is full of older players in decline who aren’t great bets to hold up and maintain their performance as the season progresses. The back end of their rotation is also a weakness. One guy I’d expect other teams to demand is Double-A right-hander Dan Hudson, a fifth-round pick from 2008 who has emerged as a potential mid-rotation starter.”

I’m going to politely disagree with 90% of what he said.

For some reason I'd forgotten about Hudson

I know someone posted earlier that the Sox were rejected on their offer for Halladay, but if the KW really sets his eyes on him, I’d have to think the Sox have as good a chance as anyone to land him. Could anybody realistically both take on Halladay’s contract for the next year-and-a-half as well as offer something like Flowers, Poreda and Danks/Hudson/Viciedo? Mind you I’m not really sure I’d want the Sox to give up so much (although I’m pretty sure I’d be okay with anyone outside of T-Flo being dealt), but I guess I’m surprised about the lack of pub around the Sox in the Halladay sweepstakes.

One of these years they'll ("they" being the Neyer and Law types) get it right

and AJ and PK and Thome and JD will fall off a cliff. Of course, they’ll neglect to mention that they’ve been predicting the Sox “old core’s” demise since, oh, 2006.

Law's name is a good way to inflate the comments on a thread

I’d just click on the subject heading, not even worth reading.

The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.

Perkins got cranked by the A's

with 24 outs still to be eaten by the Twins.

I didn't even notice that Adam LaRoche got traded to the Red Sox.

Hunter Strickland and Argenis Diaz make up the return. Not going to dazzle anyone, but LaRoche isn’t either and they would have gotten nothing for him. Diaz can’t hit a lick but is supposedly a great shortstop while Strickland is another young arm to stockpile. This gives a potential replacement to Wilson, who they could get a decent return for, while opening another slot for a youngster. I really like what Huntington is doing.

He's eating the elephant, all right, one bite at a time.

And it is quite the elephant. Is Freddie Sanchez next?

I'd think so.

If they can get prospects for Snell, Sanchez and perhaps Wilson(he’s their best player right now and you could make the argument he deserves to be there when they win), then they’ve truly turned over the franchise and have given themselves a lot of depth to work with.

Wilson is showcasing himself quite nicely lately.

Flashy.

One of the more under-appreciated players over the years.

I was annoyed when people kept saying how mediocre he was when he complained of the Pirates dismantling the team. He has a right to be upset, I’d just hope his skills hold up if he’s going to stay with the Pirates.

Don't know why -

but after being at last nights game I’ll be there again tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully tonight is a little less painful… though -

I'd rather get blown out early than experience last night's pain again.

Tonight, we are all named Carlos Torres

I bid you all good tidings and a happy gamethread. I will be at a “social engagement” if you know what I mean and will be “rooting the Sox on” if you know what I mean.

Good luck Carlos Torres
