Dewon Who?
Carlos Torres had a nice debut - 6 IP, 6 hits, 3 BB, 3 K - but, as I've said before, he's going to need to be more efficient than 53 of 95 pitches for strikes if he wants to have sustained success as a starter in the majors. Still, he deserved an opportunity and he made the most of it. Should be interesting to see how the Sox juggle their staff over the next week or so.

2 years from now, no one will remember that Scott Podsednik beat the Rays except for Scott Podsednik himself.
Regarding Torres control
Hawk and Stoney both talked about it a few times and I believe its true that the jitters and nerves of a players debut do not allow us to read too far into that players control. Some players, Felix Diaz comes to mind, did not walk many batters in the minors but seemed afraid of big league hitters and were not even aiming their pitches in the strike zone aggressively. I’m not sold on Torres but he seems like he will at least be a serviceable stand in. Remember Danks and Floyds control when they were first called up.
"Sometimes people get cut."
Danks and Floyd are also both younger than he is now.
I think Torres’s stuff is actually comparable to Carrasco’s. I think he could find a similar role at some point. In other words, he could be a back-end starter on a bad team or a long reliever.

Watching the game, I thought he looked better than Pena and didn't cost the Sox Brandon Allen
Torres doesn’t have Pena’s fastball, but he struck me as being a potentially good back-end bullpen guy.
by hitlesswonder on Jul 23, 2009 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions
That trade hinges on Cooper getting Pena back to what he was 2 years ago
when no one could hit him.
I don’t see it paying off much this year though….
by hitlesswonder on Jul 23, 2009 12:36 AM CDT up reply actions
Pena should be fine
he’s looked good so far. Should be fine with some focus on a better team.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 23, 2009 12:39 AM CDT up reply actions
if coop could do it...
if coop was the only one to make it happen for pena – then the sox offered too much.
Gosh – how could you give up a rising athletic, base stealer, above avg def for a Reliever!
Blame Linebrink
I would imagine he’s making everyone nervous that his suck might be health related and land him on the DL again.
Coach says he needs more toughness. I gotta step up.
by ChicagoPete on Jul 23, 2009 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions
he's not going to overpower people
his cutter-curve combo could definitely eat innings, though. Unless he starts having pinpoint control, he’s not a back-end guy.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 23, 2009 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions
I used "back-end" incorrectly -- I meant someone like Carrasco
by hitlesswonder on Jul 23, 2009 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions
right
but Pena is a late-innings guy when right. Nasty stuff.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 23, 2009 12:38 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, but he's not right
I agree, he has much more potential than Torres and Pena was outstanding for one year at the big league level. But he wasn’t good last year and he’s been very bad for the last 2 months this year. I have no idea what’s changed (I haven’t seen him pitch much), but I would not want him pitching in a close game right now.
I wouldn’t want Torres there either, but this season I’m not sure that Torres wouldn’t end up being the more valuable pitcher given the same chances.
by hitlesswonder on Jul 23, 2009 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions
I'd make a pretty good bet that Pena will be the better reliever considering leverage situations.
He hasn’t been used much since he’s been here and Guillen seems reluctant to use him where he should. Pena is a truly overpowering pitcher and he is valuable while he’s still cheap.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 23, 2009 12:48 AM CDT up reply actions
I'd imagine KW or Coop think they do know what's changed.
And that’s exactly why they traded for him.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 23, 2009 8:06 AM CDT up reply actions
I think he pitched well enough to throw him out there again sometime
When a spot start is needed for whatever reason.
Is it still the fourth inning?
i didnt get to witness this game
but of the video i saw, and of the line torres had, id say throw him out again, in place of richard to see how the outing goes.
but im just a 21 year old ginger who lives in lowly des moines iowa.
knocked his fucking dick in the dirt! - BuehrleMan
Really? Richard's start last night was much better than Torres' tonight
I’m not sure I saw anything to make me think that long-term Torres will be the better pitcher.
Richard could easily suck the next time out, but I think he has more upside than Torres.
by hitlesswonder on Jul 23, 2009 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions
i agree that richard pitched better last night
but he’s been terribly inconsistent while starting. yeah he’s had a few really good games, but if he could get it all together and stay consistant, that be great. dont get me wrong, im all for player development, but torres is up here, why not give him one more start?
knocked his fucking dick in the dirt! - BuehrleMan
Richard is a gamer...
come on – man gave u 8 solid innings 1 run through 8 and was efficient
I missed the first half of game (softball game after work) but
Beckham did a great job to draw the dreaded two out walk in the 8th and with the lead easy heat looked overpowering finishing the job.
The Sox are getting good pitching performances from guys only on the fringe of the MLB roster in spring — that’s a good sign in case (when) the C&C guys fuck up.
richard, when with a live arm (which is part of the problem with him) is throwing 95mph
When you mix that in with a good change, LHP, and solid command, you got a line like he had the other night.
Of course he often tires quickly (loses velocity), doesn’t have good command, and gets lit up.
He’s shown he can very good on occasion, but worst case I still think Richard would be very good out of the pen.
Missed Torres’ start tonight.
Richard lives and dies with his fastball command.
When he’s hitting both corners, he gets outs pretty quickly. When he doesn’t throw strikes, he gets shelled.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 23, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions
yes, if he wants to be a starter he needs more secondary offerings
his fb is a plus pitch most nights, but when he doesn’t have his best command he needs another way to get outs, especially k’s.
yes, he definitely needs to learn how to step back and let hitters get themselves out.
I don’t think he has the ability to go out there and pump fastballs in the mid-nineties all the time. He’s very high-intensity, which could make him a good reliever, at least in the short-term. We’ve seen him do this well.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 23, 2009 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions
he's been dependable in the bull-pen
i feel safer with Richard in the Bull Pen than i did with Poreda (just didnt see enough reps from him yet though)
It'll be very interesting to see what the Sox do if Colon pitches well on Friday...
and Richard throws well in his next start. [A shaky] starter surplus, anyone?
Chicago White Sox Examiner — Your what hurts?
I think Richard ends up being a lefty in the pen then
At least until C or C gets hurt again.

…but it might just be enough to win the division.
I missed the game today... that usually doesn't happen
but i was at Motley Crue and Godsmack… great concert by the way..Motley Crue rocked, i was highly impressed…….however, from the numbers and the highlights Torres looked ok. Thank goodness for BJ Upton! we should have won yesterday and lost, they should have won today and didn’t….. god it would be fucking sweet to take 3/4. Here’s hoping Buehrle is up to the task.

Somewhere Q! is weeping and practicing his pop-ups.
These games aren’t good for my ticker. Especially the cardiac bullpen right now.
Torres and Richard combine for 14IP, 4 Runs, 10 hits and 10K’s against the defending AL Champs in a very tough park to pitch in during July. I’m impressed.

I just hope Castro is not throwing balls to center field when trying to throw out base stealers, that’s all. The last Sunday game I went … that crap was brutally annoying.

totally...I had a 5'0 90lb asian girl on a work softball team

Fields will K twice. It’s kinda like the Sox are a National League team with no DH when Fields hits 9th. Its a macho thing for Ozzie. We’ll beat you up with one hand tied behind our back

Castro is serviceable against lefties, and Nix is probably just as good at Getz vs. Kazmir, and really Thome vs. Kazmir isn’t ideal either. I don’t see any problems with this line up.

good move then.
Thome still strikes out an awful lot. I still want to see thome throw down a bunt to the empty left side…oh well – guess a bunt is same as a walk for thome…but would force an opposing manager to do something beside the shift.
Noticed the sox do the same shift against Pena.
