Jermaine is our bridge to Dyenasty
As a life long Sox fan I'm a bit pessimistic by nature and with good cause. We've suffered through decades of mediocre baseball with the occasional team that made it to the playoffs, only to break our hearts and then suffer years of rebuilding for our next shot. I was thankful for the miracle of 2005 and considered it a once in a lifetime thrill but am now convinced we can win "a few more." (Exhale)
The reason I'm drinking the kool-aid now is it appears we finally have a plan. We've traded some key players to start rebuilding the farm system and took advantage of our one disappointing season since 2005 to acquire the next "face" of the franchise in Beckham. I assumed KW was blowing smoke directly up our asses when he said we were going to begin rebuilding while still contending. We've seen this before and it's called salary dump but this time it's different. We are nearly 100 games into the season and guess what? We are contending! Sure, it's a weak division and we may not win it but we're definitely in it. We also have the talent coming up through the system in the next couple of years to compete in 2011 and beyond when the likes of Danks, Mitchell, Flowers, Poreda, Viciedo, Hudson etc develop and become ready to form the next core group as the veterans of this team move on.
In my opinion, next year is the important year to take another step forward and continue to rebuild while also contending. We need to let the young guys grow up in an environment that expects to win and knows how to handle winning. Jermaine Dye is the key to making this happen and that's why KW needs to pick up his option for next year. Thome will be gone and Paulie has been up and down the last couple of years while JD has been as consistent and productive as outfielders come. With Quentin's injury history, it would be too big of a gamble to take his bat out of our lineup. We could keep Pods as our lead-off hitter as DH and we would really only have one hole to fill for next year, the dreaded cf position. Maybe we're lucky and Danks is ready but if not, we could look for a veteran to plug the hole for a year until Danks or Mitchell is ready. The infield will be better defensively with another year of experience for Beckham, Getz and Ramirez and Nix is a solid utility guy. Pods could fill in for Quentin in left, Quentin can begin getting some experience in RF when JD is our DH. Contreras and Dotel will be gone but it looks like between Richard, Poreda, Garcia, Torres, Link we can fill that void from within. If not, we have payroll flexibility for next year to bring someone in.
For the first time in my lifetime, I can see a rosy future for the South Side.........

You don't agree with keeping Dye?
If we do keep him would you rather have Pods in cf full time or not with the team? DH seems like the right spot for him.
Sox win, cubs lose.....what a wonderful world!
DH stands for designated hitter.
so it’s makes sense to find someone to be the designated hitter who is an above average hitter.

Really?
If I’m not mistaken each spot in the lineup has a fairly defined role. In the “major league” game the object is to put your best team (offensive and defensive) and lineup on the field. Pods has been the catalyst for this team since joining them in May and I don’t think even you could argue with that. Perhaps you think it would make more sense to play a below average defensive player in the field because he doesn’t have the DH stats most teams have? Fine, I’ll let you put Pods in cf where he would more fit your profile, we’ll see how that works out over 162 games.
I thought designated hitter meant having a player bat in place of the pitcher but is not required to play defense. Thanks for correcting me, some of us are still learning the game.

they aren't re-signing pods

it wouldn't make sense to keep him as a 4th OF? Over the likes of D-Wise and BA?

i don't think he'll keep this up
and then we’d have a weak-hitting, poor fielding 34 year-old 4th outfielder

why would you propose that a team sign a poor offensive player to DH. this makes no sense. so, yes, i do think you’re still learning this game.

So, in your opinion Pods has had no offensive value to the Sox this year?
If so, you should go back to your cowardly practice of offering no opinion of your own.
Sox win, cubs lose.....what a wonderful world!
I think a reading comp
class would be a fine investment on your behalf. I find it amazing that you get ‘Pods has had no offensive value to the Sox this year’ out of ‘Pods is a poor offensive player.’
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
sure he has.
this emphasis being on “this year.” with the bat, he’s been about 2.5 runs above an average player. however, i’m going to weigh a bit more heavily the rest of his career, where he’s been a below average offensive player.
even if one thinks pods will hit next season like he’s hit for a few months or so this season, that still would not justify using him as a DH. there will be many players available – including another soon to be FA on this team – who produce far, far more with the bat.

they will keep him around as the 4th OF next year.
book it.

i would bring JD back
I would also bring Thome back. I would look to deal Quentin. Depending on who you get for Quentin you may or may not bring pods back….. I am not a big fan of Pods. he has played awesome this year and i give him credit for it… just not sure he can keep it up. Maybe bring him back as a 4th outfielder and insurance policy.
if you don’t bring thome back, dye slides in at DH, Quentin to RF and Pods can stay in CF. If you don’t bring Dye back, you are in trouble.
I agree with about 60 percent of your post.

i meant pods can stay in LF
and hopefully we take care of this embarrassing CF situation once and for all.

Pods is a "problem" if he continues to hit
I agree with you on Pods. We all know or at least suspect he is playing over his head this year but if he somehow can keep his production at the level of this year we probably should bring him back. He has been the sparkplug the team has been looking for for years in the leadoff role. He’s a bad defensive player and a terrible base runner but he does have a way of gettitng on base and creating opportunities for the offense.
In my opinion we have to keep a healthy Quentin, we saw what he is capable of doing last year when healthy. Dye is also one of the best run producers in the game and I think he has a couple of good years left. DH would be an ideal spot for him, at least sharing the spot with others. That’s why I don’t see a spot for Thome. I love the guy but he can’t run anymore and he can’t play anywhere in the field. I doubt he would want to sign a 5 million dollar contract to be a part time DH here. Center field is still our problem short term as I hope to see Danks and/or Mitchell fill that hole in the next couple of years.
Leadoff hitter could again be a problem if we don’t bring Pods back but I think Getz could fill that hole if he makes a slight adjustment to his approach at the plate. He needs to back off the plate a few inches and quit looking to pull the ball so much. He’s getting pounded inside and has been getting some tough calls on him because he’s on the plate. He needs to open the outside of the plate up for himself and learn to start driving the ball to left. If he can do this I think the kid will be a 300 hitter and be a very good leadoff man for us.
Sox win, cubs lose.....what a wonderful world!
deal quentin and keep pods?
How about we let Wise walk, acquire a legitiment CF, and keep pods as our 4th OF?

actually this is probably the highest point to sell him...
just wait til he gets injured again..then he really will have no value.

If thome is gone
we shouldn’t bring back pods either, keeps thome and jd, and sign a cneter fielder in the offseason
Carlos Guillen, the Latino Punto
Pods is gone after this season
I’d keep Dye for sure. But there are some corner outfielder FAs coming up this year who are younger options (Holliday, Crawford, Bay) and heck, maybe KW makes a splash if we make the playoffs this year. I’d really love to see KW sign one of those and we DH Dye, and let Thome go.
I’m not anti-Thome. His production has declined a bit, but his decline is still better than a lot of player’s peaks. But at 39 he seems a high risk for a precipitous decline. So its really going to be a question of how much money KW has to spend.
Is it still the fourth inning?
They are younger.. but they are a hell of a lot more expensive.
And would require long term deals. Considering we have outfielders coming up in our farm system, a 4+ year deal doesn’t seem to be the best use of our money. Might as well roll the dice with JD one more year in RF, and hope you can find a stop gap in CF for a year or two.
I think Pods is fine as a 4th outfielder, but I don’t see us going into next year with him as a starter if he stays here. He bought himself a couple more years in the majors with the way he played this year, but I doubt many teams want to go into 2010 with him as their starting LF.

Jermaine Dye needs to get out of RF ASAP
He’s killing us out there and has been a league average right fielder because of it.
huh?
