Southpaw rolls past Rays for 18th perfect game in history

CHICAGO -- Pitching with his usual finesse and fast pace, Mark Buehrle tossed a perfect game Thursday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field, leading the White Sox to a 5-0 win over the Rays.
It was the second no-hitter of Buehrle's career, the last occurring on April 18, 2007, against the Rangers. He is the first player since Randy Johnson to throw multiple no-hitters, and the first to throw a perfect game since Johnson did it on May 18, 2004.
The Rays were barely able to make hard contact against Buehrle. Only three batters lined out, while the rest sprayed weak popups and fly balls to the outfield. Gabe Kapler led off the ninth inning and lined Buehrle's pitch to deep center field, but Dewayne Wise leaped at the wall to make the catch and preserve the left-hander's perfection.
Buehrle struck out six batters and recorded 11 ground ball outs. The 28,036 in attendance cheered after each out, and the cheers grew louder as the possibility of a perfect game drew nearer.
Making his first start of the second half, Buehrle (11-3) is looking to win 20 games in a season for the first time in his career. Thursday's outing should go a long way.
The White Sox offense wasted little time getting to Rays starter Scott Kazmir (4-6). Josh Fields, making only his fourth start in July, belted a grand slam to left on Kazmir's 3-1 offering, giving Buehrle all the cushion he needed.
Scott Podsednik and Alexei Ramirez hit back-to-back doubles down the right field line to lead off the fifth and provide an unnecessary insurance run.

one of the best plays
in sports this year made by Wise to save the perfect game, followed by one of the worst calls in sport announcing of Hawk tryin to overshadow the moment by screaming yes like an idiot
congrats to buehrle, I can only imagine that present hes getting Wise for that sick catch
Go Cubs Go, Fly Eagles Fly, http://twitter.com/mlbtrivia
I agree completely
I am not downplaying Wise for that catch because it was pretty damn amazing, but I am just trying to give credit to the pitching that led up to that catch.
Wise is a great outfielder to say the least.
I'm not a big fan of Hawk but I feel I must defend him here.
What’s wrong with Hawk getting caught up in the moment? If I was there, I too would have been screaming “Yes! Yes! Yes!” Without Hawk in the booth, where is the excitement?

Yes, I'm sure that was Hawks goal.
I dunno how you could be foolish enough to think you could rain on our parade.
"wordy and overly verbose."

Wait.....Hawk bashing is fun and all
But, what else would you have wanted from that moment? Oh wait, take out the “Yes” and insert excited breathing like Ron Santo?
The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.

Awesome!
He is an all-star pitcher.
He has pitched multiple no hit games
He has faced the minimum twice
He hit a homerun this season.
He has a save in the World Series
He pitched a complete game against the Angles in the ALCS
He is the best pitcher the Sox have had in several years,
He is the guy with class and dignity, and is very deserving.
Congrats, Mark Buehrle!!

There's a reason he was an All Star
There were no other White Sox on the All Star roster this year but this man…coincidence? I don’t think so! He is a great pitcher and I am super proud to be a White Sox fan today (along with every other day!)
he has actually faced the minimum 3 times.
the other time was a 2 hitter against cleveland on july 21, 2004.
it is what it is......
at a bar
there were all these cub fans who wanted so badly a tampa player to get a hit . they couldn’t stand it to see a white sox pitcher throw a perfect game.
take it easy
why care about a bloggers grammar
