White Sox Minor League Update Loves Erin Andrews
Now that we've all seen Aaron Poreda up close, what is his future? He makes his Triple A debut tonight for Charlotte as a starter - and he certainly has a major league caliber arm - but many (most?) still think his future is out of the bullpen.

I just don't think Poreda has the knack for the offspeed stuff
Sure he’s still young and can improve upon it, but I don’t see him being an effective starter in my totally uninformed opinion. He could be effective out of the bullpen.
Is it still the fourth inning?
Yeah thats my choice too.

Am with you...
I don’t know that he will ever be an ace… But he has that feel of a 2-3 starter… It’s interesting for me to see how he develops. I know that we can’t judge the minor league system as a whole based upon Poreda but, we drafted control pitchers with low ceilings (backend starters for what seems a decade). Since our drafting philosopy has moved to drafting higher risk higher reward players i’m curious to see how those types of players develop compared to Mark Buerhle comand types. Watching Danks develop a cutter (while here), Floyd figure things out, and Thorton turn things around while in our system gives me hope that Poreda will be able to develop. At 22 and with that live of an arm, I still think his future is bright..

but he ought to be a starter until he proves otherwise.
I've only seen a handful of innings
but without more development on secondary pitches he’s a set-up man

that's some interesting logic there.
there’s quite a bit of a difference between saying a guy is ready for the carolina league and saying a guy is ready for the AFL.

So, step on out there Lar. Is he a top 10 prospect or not?
What’s your number? 6?,7?, 9?, 10?, 24? I read your updates and hear how he’s not challenged. He’s 22 and supposedly a top prospect, what’s wrong with testing him? Interesting logic, I know.

It seems to be pretty hush hush on the J Jones front
But I think it’s essential that they sign him and Morgado (assuming they can’t get Goodwin and/or Dane Williams), otherwise this class looks a little weak.

Don’t give up on him
Brent Lillibridge SS/CF, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte)
Sunday’s stats: 3-for-4, R, BB, K, SB
One of the players receiving from Atlanta in the Javier Vasquez deal, Lillibridge hit just .162 in the big leagues this year, but he’s finally found his swing back in the minors, and just as importantly, his patient approach, as in 21 July games, he’s batting .342/.435/.479. His ability to run well and play multiple positions should make him at the very least a valuable September callup.

Dan Hudson, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Hudson is certainly the White Sox breakout player of the year, and he might be the pitching breakout of the year across all of baseball. With eight shutout innings on Friday, he now sports a 2.03 ERA in seven Double-A starts as well as more than a strikeout per inning. With a power frame (standing 6-foot-4 and weighing in at 225 pounds) and a plus fastball/slider combination, scouts are seeing him as a easy future big leaguer, though they’re mixed as to whether it’s as a starter or reliever.

White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Goldstein's pretty inconsistent
Just a couple of weeks ago he said Hudson’s slider was more of a slurve, and to quote him it was “not a very good one at that”. Now it’s a plus slider.
by The Big Hurt on Jul 27, 2009 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions
he could just mean the fastball is plus.
however, then i’m not sure how a plus fastball and not a very good slider combine with a power frame to make an easy future big leaguer.
i’d always heard the slider/whatever was at least decent.

he does give up a lot of walks.
he also throws lots of pitches in general, as you’d expect from a guy who strikes out a lot and walks a lot. one of the primary reasons he likely will end up in the bullpen instead of starting.

Maybe he's having visa issues
getting into Alabama?
I have two questions regarding White Sox outfielder Jared Mitchell. First, what player would you compare his skill set and speed to? Second, how soon could we see him at the major league level?
Dan Christenson
Aurora, Ill.
When I was working on our draft coverage this spring, one of the scouts I spoke to likened Mitchell to Carl Crawford. Crawford is a little bigger (6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, versus 6 feet and 192 pounds for Mitchell), but both jump out at you with their game-changing athleticism and speed. Crawford could have been an option quarterback at Nebraska, while Mitchell played wide receiver on a national championship football team for Louisiana State. He also won another national title at the 2009 College World Series, where he was named Most Outstanding Player.
The 23rd overall pick in the draft, Mitchell signed for $1.2 million. Though he has hit .393 in his first eight games at low Class A Kannapolis, he may not race to the majors. He split time between two sports at Louisiana State, and while he’s obviously gifted, he’s also in need of a lot of polish. He put an emphasis on taking pitches to get on base, but he often falls behind in the count, leading to strikeouts. He needs more balance in his stance and less uppercut his swing, and he shows more speed than savvy on the bases and in the outfield.
At the same time, Mitchell wouldn’t be the first gifted athlete who took off once he focused solely on baseball. Realistically, he’s at least two years away from joining the White Sox, who have been searching for an answer in center field since trading Aaron Rowand.

**White Sox pitching prospect Dan Hudson is suffering from Broken Stat Line Syndrome: he’s having a terrific year, but no one seems to be noticing because he’s split it between three different levels. He began with a 1.23 ERA with a 30/2 K/BB in 22 innings in the Sally League, then posted a 3.40 ERA with a 49/13 K/BB in 45 innings in the Carolina League, and is now 2.03 ERA with a 46/7 K/BB in 44 innings in the Double-A Southern League. His composite line: 10-5, 2.43, 125/22 K/BB in 111 innings, just 78 hits allowed, with no deterioration in his ratios in Double-A. Hudson was a fifth round pick out of Old Dominion in 2008. He hits 90 with his fastball, has a plus slider, and has improved his changeup this year. He obviously throws strikes and has good command, and he definitely belongs on your prospect lists.

Morel has really bounced back
after the injury and subsequent struggles. I suppose he will find himself in AA next year and Viciedo in AAA . . . going to be interesting to see how those two progress and how the Sox handle it. Not sure if it is still the consensus, but Morel’s glove was supposedly plus and we all know about Viciedo’s struggles.

Speaking of Morel...
Sleeper Alert!
Brent Morel, 3B, White Sox (High-A Winston-Salem)
Wednesday’s stats: 3-for-4, HR (14), R, 2 RBI
A third-round pick last year out of Cal Poly, Morel more than held his own in a full-season league after signing, and while he got off to a slow-ish start in the Carolina League this year, he’s been one of the circuit’s hottest bats of late, batting .340/.414/.588 in his last 25 games. Beyond the bat, he’s an plus athlete with a good glove and above-average speed (19 stolen bases) to boot.

C.J. Retherford: With Josh Fields possibly on his way out of Chicago, this former non-drafted amateur free agent (a great scouting job by the White Sox) could suddenly find himself jumping up the depth chart at third base. Retherford has done nothing but hit since signing and he’s currently hitting .294/.334/.471 with 28 doubles and eight homers in 340 at-bats. The 23-year-old does not possess a ton of power; his swing is more geared to the line drive. His walk rate has also dipped each season and is down to 6.3 BB% in 2009 at double-A. The right-handed hitter has potential, but Retherford needs to be a little more patient.

at the risk of infringing on larry's territory...
nice outing for poreda tonight: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 ER
flowers 0-4, 2 K
Flowers is struggling since his promotion
I was sort of expecting him to wreak havoc in Charlotte. Hope he isn’t injured.

He is one good game
away from ‘looking’ normal, wouldn’t get too worked up over it.
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
small sample size and all
I was a bit worried too and then I realized he’d only played (at the time) in 9 games. Unless of course you’ve actually been watching the games and noticed him being severely overmatched or something

haven't seen games -- just watching box scores
I’m not particularly worried either, just a little surprised.

hudson dominant for b'ham
hudson 6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 10 K, 0 ER
viciedo 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI
marrero 2-4, HR
danks 1-4, 2B, BB, 2 K
Looks like Viciedo will continue the better OPS every month progression
Not surprisingly, his IsO has also risen every month. And although the BB% isn’t anything to cheer about, he’s only striking out in about 16% of his PAs. So long as he finishes with a strong August, it’ll be tough to complain about Viciedo’s first year in the States.
And that appears to be a pretty decent lineup that Hudson tore through — Stanton is a big time prospect and their first baseman looks (somewhat) legit, too.
Viciedo since the all-star break
.373/.407/.608

Back Injury?
From sleeper, to prospect, to really good prospect
Daniel Hudson, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Thursday’s stats: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K
If there’s some sort of award for breakout pitcher of the year, just start the engraving now. A fifth-round pick last year out of Old Dominion, Hudson has been on a crazy roll of late, allowing just two runs over 32 innings in his last five starts while giving up 19 hits and striking out 35. He has a power frame, plus velocity with fantastic location and movement, as well as a nice slider. The only bad news is that he left the game with what looked like a back injury.

B'ham's strength coach says he's fine
No injury at all. He was pointing towards his back when he left the game though, so I guess taking him out of the game was just a precautionary thing.

plus velocity on the fastball, "nice" slider, bad back.
throw it in with the rest of the reports. i heard his knuckleball is coming along nicely as well.

No. 3 DAN HUDSON, RHP
WHITE SOX
Team: Double-A Birmingham (Southern)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: 2-0, 0.00, 14 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 17 K
The Scoop: Hudson started the season in low Class A, but at this rate he could make a case for getting to Triple-A before the season is over. The 2008 fifth-rounder out of Old Dominion is working on a 20-inning scoreless streak and has allowed no earned runs in five of his eight Double-A starts. Hudson’s delivery isn’t the cleanest—he tends to throw across his body, but there is no arguing with the results.
Josh Phegley, c, White Sox: It looked like Phegley would tear up the South Atlantic League after signing quickly and collecting two multi-hit games in his first three professional games. But since then, Phegley, who was considered one of the best bats among the college catching crop, has collected just eight hits in 67 at-bats. He did hit two home runs last week, but his line of .163/.202/.350 with three walks and 13 strikeouts in 21 games for Kannapolis isn’t impressive. Setting up with a low crouch and open stance, there were few questions about Phegley’s ability to rake. Rather, scouts wondered how well he would handle putting on the tools of ignorance every day and catch pitchers with movement. Still, Phegley, 21, has shown the ability to make adjustments in the past. Now he needs to show he can make them in the pros.

How old is the phrase "tools of ignorance"?
Can’t they come up with anything slightly less hackneyed?

Effin' lawyers are everywhere:
This kit was lovingly dubbed “the tools of ignorance” by Herold “Muddy” Ruel, a lawyer turned backstop who caught for greats like Walter Johnson with the Washington Senators in the 1920s.

sergio santos, the infielder in ST turned pitcher
has made the hudson jump from kannapolis to birmingham. of course he’s a reliever and he hasn’t been that good but it’s still interesting for a guy who hadn’t pitched professionally before may.

He finishes July with an .826 OPS
Just curious — could you or larry give a ballpark answer on what would be a league average, park adjusted OPS for Birmingham? .725, give or take? I pulled up this article from Clay Davenport that has the league average at about .740, but that was back in 2004.
SouLg avg. is .257/.334/.385 so far.
and you probably don’t have to adjust B’ham batting lines. it’s a pitchers park, but for Viciedo, it’s also his home park. those two factors probably about cancel out.
2008: .267/.346/.407 Avg. Batt Age: 24.6
2007: .259/.334/.392 Avg. Batt Age: 24.4
2006: .249/.322/.368 Avg. Batt Age: 24.2
