White Sox Acquire Mark Kotsay, Trade Brian Anderson to Red Sox
Kotsay will join the club on Wednesday. The White Sox also receive cash in the deal.
Kotsay's experience at 1B may make Josh Fields even more redundant.

He tanks, Richard is entrenched in and KW goes and gets a lh reliever.

Kotsay is a backup 1B at this point -- he can't really play the OF anymore
Fields will be off the major league roster. He has an option left, so I suppose he might just get sent to AAA. But I’ll guess that he’ll probably be sent packing by the deadline as well.

White Sox acquire Kotsay, cash from Boston for Anderson
By Mark Gonzales
MINNEAPOLIS – The White Sox added a left-handed bat by acquiring veteran outfielder Mark Kotsay and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for outfielder Brian Anderson.
Kotsay, 33, is a .281 (1,543-5,493) hitter with 306 doubles, 110 home runs and 614 RBI over 13 major-league seasons with Florida (1997-2000), San Diego (2001-03), Oakland (2004-07), Atlanta (2008) and Boston (2008-09). The 6-foot-0, 205-pounder batted .257 (19-74) with one homer and five RBI in 27 games with the Red Sox in 2009 before being designated for assignment on Friday.
Since the start of the 1998 season, Kotsay ranks third among all major-league outfielders with 113 assists, trailing only Bobby Abreu (117) and Vladimir Guerrero (115).
Kotsay owns a .373 (25-67) lifetime average as a pinch-hitter, the second-highest mark among active players with at least 50 pinch plate appearances behind Seth Smith.
"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."

He's the required veteran former-OF deadline acquisition
Adds veteran presence, a kind-of-crappy lefthanded bat to rest konerko against RHP and pinch-hitting ability(!) off the bench.
BA clearly had 0 value….and that’s what they got for him.

IMO this trade is simply to balance the roster to faciliate more trades
fields is pretty much a goner it looks like.
I agree, but I think Fields will be moved in a similar trade to this
Something along the “bad A ball reliever” line — I don’t expect value in return, I think they just want him out of the organization.

L.A. proved too much for the man,
So he’s leavin’ the life he’s come to know,
He said he’s goin’ back to find
Ooh, what’s left of his world,
The world he left behind
Not so long ago.
He’s leaving,
On that midnight train to BOSTON,
And he’s goin’ back
To a simpler place and time.
And I’ll be with him
On that midnight train to BOSTON,
I’d rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.
He kept dreamin’
That someday he’d be a star.
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don’t always come true.
So he pawned all his hopes
and he even sold his old car
Bought a one way ticket
To the life he once knew,
Oh yes he did,
He said he would
Be leavin
On that midnight train to BOSTON

If you go away on this summer day,
Then you might as well take the sun away;
All the birds that flew in the summer sky,
When our love was new and our hearts were high;
When the day was young and the night was long,
And the moon stood still for the night birds song.
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
But if you stay, Ill make you a day
Like no day has been, or will be again;
Well sail the sun, well ride on the rain,
Well talk to the trees and worship the wind.
Then if you go, Ill understand,
Leave me just enough love to fill up my hand,
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
If you go, as I know you will, you must tell the world to stop turning
Till you return again, if you ever do, for what good is love without loving you,
Can I tell you now, as you turn to go, Ill be dying slowly till the next hello,
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
But if you stay, Ill make you a night
Like no night has been, or will be again.
Ill sail on your smile, Ill ride on your touch,
Ill talk to your eyes that I love so much.
But if you go, go, I wont cry,
Though the good is gone from the word goodbye,
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.
If you go away, as I know you must,
Therell be nothing left in the world to trust,
Just an empty room, full of empty space,
Like the empty look I see on your face.
Id have been the shadow of your shadow
If I thought it might have kept me by your side.
If you go away, if you go away, if you go away.

the club spent millions of dollars on home pregnancy tests, DNA testing, STD shots and horse tranquelizers each year due to BA’s “lifestyle”.

I was out of town when the MB perfecto took place.
Was there any chatter here about AJ possibly being bummed that he wasn’t catching?
You know, sort of like when Walter Payton finally got to the Superbowl and then never got to the end zone.

Other than that, he was fine about it. The fact that he’s catching today instead of Castro says it all.

Fact
We can all stop watching for a Halladay trade to be announced today. Favre won’t be out done. Today is his day!!!
"Stay thirsty my friends."
I don't mean to overannalize this but...
This deal seems to be a precurser to a much larger deal that includes Josh Fields, probobly as a small aset to the deal, but nevertheless.
Oz+Coop+Hawk= baseball trinity
You're overanalyzing it.
The Sox gave Anderson his wish and got him out of the organization, and gave Ozzie Guillen the dose of Erstad he can’t live without.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jul 28, 2009 4:39 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Yeah, but I think Fields will be gone as well (but not as part of any substantial trade)
He was whiny about playing time — had to have a face-to-face meeting with Kenny and has to be the type player (no glove, K’s) that Ozzie doesn’t want. Although he can bunt.
by hitlesswonder on Jul 28, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Just because he sucks
doesn’t mean that he can’t be a small piece in a larger trade.
Oz+Coop+Hawk= baseball trinity
That's true, I'm saying I don't think there's going to be a larger trade
Or at least I don’t think the moving of Anderson makes a big trade any more likely.

Right.
Anderson would be gone one way or the other.
What’s Fields’s status? Do the Sox still have options on him?
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jul 28, 2009 5:02 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
i'm not sure about this
06, 07, 08 were all option years for Fields, I think.
Anderson was with the Sox for all of 06 and 08 where options were used in 05, 07 and 09.

I find it interesting larry’s latest ML reference to him compares him to Crawford, whom I have coveted for about 4 years. ’Twill be tough to wait until 2011, I think. He might be worth it.

Every team in the game wants Crawford, believe me
Mitchell will be hard-pressed to match his production. Their games are, at this point, pretty different, too. Crawford was leading the league in steals at Mitchell’s current age. The only parallels I see are that they are black, very fast, and athletic.
As a hitter, Mitchell will probably be closer to Curtis Granderson or Milton Bradley than Carl Crawford. Holding true to the player comparison golden rule, of course.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 28, 2009 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd take either, without Bradley's attitude
and injury hx. I think you might be early in judging, though, as he has not devoted all of his time to baseball. We’ll let it unfold.

What I'm saying is that, by default, Mitchell is a high strikeout high walk player
He’s going to be a little older by the time he’s polished and his max value, as of now, looks like it may be as a power hitter with decent value on the bases and in the field rather than a line-drive hitter with a ton of value on the bases and in the field. Mitchell and Crawford, in their infancy stages of pro ball, are at the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to discipline and aggressiveness.

He leaves with no hard feelings, including toward his manager.
“That was all played out moreso by the media and by the fans,” said Anderson of his relationship with Guillen. “We weren’t the closest on the team, but his job is to manage and not to be my friend. He was doing his job.”
