Colon to the DL (Again); Randy Williams Joins Sox
Williams is a 33 year old lefty who has 31 innings of major league experience and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2005.
For Charlotte this year: 36.2 IP, 31 hits, 11 BB, 40 K. He performs better against lefties, especially with respect to his walk rate.
And, in news you already knew, Josh Fields was optioned to Charlotte and Mark Kotsay takes his active roster spot. The 40 man roster now stands at the full complement of 40.

i had thought
perhaps this was all an attempt to keep his innings jump manageable and get him some work with cooper. but then i saw how many innings he’s thrown and that idea went out the window. the whole situation was odd.

If he was a "hedge"
I’m not sure what he was being used to hedge against. Richard sucking? Count getting injured again/sucking? Can’t figure it out, esp. since he didn’t do terribly.
I believe this is the work of Rudolf Hess.

seems like the white sox were following the "just put your x best arms to fill the x pitching spots on your roster"
of course, should use those arms. i think ozzie just didn’t know what to do with poreda – is a lefty specialist? one inning guy? mop up? long relief? – and he had other options which, at the time, were performing pretty well.
my long stated preference was for poreda to be given a full season in the minors (with a sept. call-up) to get the innings required to work on his secondary offering so the team knows what role he’ll be able to fill in the future. so i’m glad he’s in the minors and not acting as a loogy in the majors.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Blatant racism.
Pitching (check), Hitting (check), Defense (uh, no).
he should be a starter.
quit jerking him around and just let him pitch in the minors. maybe the sox decided to go back to that philosophy.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
that seems rationale
although they waffled with him while he was here, at least the stint was a relatively short one.

If we trade Jenks or JD I'll believe we're sellers.
Otherwise, BA and Fields are not material trades. Just because we are not buyers does not mean we are sellers. IIRC Cheat postulated that we’d be “holders”, or suggested we should stand pat.

BA and Fields not packaged into bigger, buyer-esque trades doesn't exactly settle the mind.

White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
A once highly touted prospect that's seemingly lost his way?
We see pitching trades involving this all the time. I don’t see why the same can’t be said about Josh Fields. I think we can all agree on the fact that what he needs most is a hitting coach – then he could be a valuable power hitter. Really, I don’t see the difference between Fields, Danny Richar, and Butter Fingers besides the fact that the latter two were smaller players in trades that yielded the likes of Jr. and Swisher.
I’m not arguing, I’m just saying I think we can do better than trades that produce absolutely nothing, like the BA trade did, if we try bundling some players. And I’m not talking about stars, just someone to help out the club.
Just answer this and I’ll settle: do you think Brandon Allen combined with Josh Fields would garner more than Pena?

Pretty much.
I don’t even necessarily think it’s a conscious, well-thought out decision to do so…..but just as much having to do with the mix of players they have, need and their current place in the standings…..nothing except these minor, insignificant transactions work right now. The minor decisions made in the last few days make sense.
Right.
They don’t have the pieces to make a big move and still be competitive. So that means they either stand pat or white flag it. And since they’re not going to white flag it…

JP Ricciardi was officially designated as an idiot two days ago on this site. He’s just proving it now. The man has the following players to trade, enough to re-stock the Jays system, which currently will never catch the Bosox or Yankees and believes that he is holding all the cards:
Marco Scutaro – Type 1 FA at the end of the season currently hitting .294 and plays a good short.
Scott Downs – serviceable set up lefty out of the bullpen
Scott Rolen – always a good fielding, injury prone, 3B hitting .320 this year.
And of course Roy Halladay.

I had a dream last night that Hawk had a heart attack in the booth at the twinkie dome
and stone poney refused to give him CPR but DJ came over from the radio booth and saved him. Seriously.

I love this team again. I know they’re bad for me.
They’ll probably get drunk again and beat me… but I just can’t help myself.

Nice.
How in God’s name has Hawk not had a heart attack yet? The way that guy gets amped up?

Freddy Sanchez traded to the Giants for Tim Alderson.
http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/archive/2009/07/29/pirates-trade-sanchez-to-giants.aspx
Neal Huntington might be one of the best GMs in the game.
Fucking Giants are cleaning up!
Sanchez and Garko are nice fits. Sabean may be getting it right.

Sanchez has been on a downward spiral all year
Though he could be a big contributor if he regains form. Alderson is a pretty good pitching prospect, so I was surprised Huntington got him. The SF fans are sick over the trade.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jul 29, 2009 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions
If I played for PIT I'd be on a downward spiral, too.
Change of scene might be good. SF is awful purdy compared to PIT. And a pennant race livens things up, too.
Or not.

so if Sabean isn’t retarded, this speaks badly of Alderson?

he might be worse than other GMs
but i think we all just overvalue prospects quite a bit.
THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY
I was thinking the same thing
from the admittedly little I’ve read about Alderson, his ceiling seems to be as a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher. Bumgardner (sp?) seems to be the real pitching gem currently in the San Fran farm system.
Sanchez is a ridiculously big upgrade for San Fran, kind of like if the Sox got a real CFer (both offensively and defensively).
I should also mention that I don’t think it’s a bad deal for Pitt — quite the opposite, getting Alderson is a very nice haul for Sanchez. I just agree with colin that prospects are overvalued by us fan-types.
Nice piece on SI.com today about that.
Top 10 prospects from 10 years ago vs 9 years ago. Quite the crapshoot.

i think it goes a little further than that
i think we don’t give sufficient credit to the sophistication of most/all teams. there’s a lot of money riding on this stuff and its run by guys used to running other businesses successfully. and these guys create organizations of people to be thinking about baseball 24/7. in the very least, the baseball folk should be as sophisticated as the free commentary and analysis that’s been aggregated to this point.
THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY
i highly enjoy this guy
who values his prospects too highly.
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/freddy-sanchez-for-who-seriously
asserts that the $8M option for sanchez is too high. rather odd considering his own site values sanchez this year already at $9.7M.
at any rate, alderson is nice. maybe this will look awful in a few years. or maybe alderson’s arm will fall off. more likely something in between.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
That made me laugh as well
I like how he sort of ignores that most of the minor league season has passed and he still uses the scouting report from before. Alderson isn’t the prospect he was 5 months ago . . . has lost velo and is not throwing in the 90s anymore, and while his current stuff kind of works in AA, it will not play out at the MLB level . . . so some real risk there. He is 20, so who knows, but not that cut and dry for sure. And who is to say you are upgrading from Uribe . . . (who has been quite the bargain this year), maybe he is often going to be replacing the suckfest they have a SS known as Renteria.
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
hey you could be right
but teams wouldn’t keep doing it if it were that bad an idea.
