Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Sets Assist High In Easy Win Over Sacramento

Jake Peavy Is Apparently a Member of the White Sox

Until we hear directly from Jake Peavy himself, I'm going to assume that he has approved the trade. As you'll recall, the White Sox traded for Peavy earlier this season, had the names leak out, and hung in the wind for a day while Peavy decided the he didn't want to pitch in the AL. I don't know what's changed, if anything at all, but everyone is reporting this as if it's a done deal.

Sox get: Jake Peavy (have to rely on Carlos Torres as 5th starter until Peavy's healthy)

Padres get: Aaron PoredaClayton RichardAdam Russell and Dexter Carter, per Mayo.

Edit by larry at 4:01: Lillibridge has been called up and will be in uniform tonight.

I think it is a great deal, if we make a nice run in these next 2 years. The only person i am worried about amounting to much is Poreda. But we are getting a when healthy cy young candidate. This is a fantastic deal in my eyes.

How do you figure?

Recommend you look at his actual record.

This year is inconclusive. He’s an even .500 home and away. His era is higher away, but not by much (3.58 vs 4.60) for the sample size.

Last year, he was .500 or near both home and away. Sure, his era and homers were 2½ to 3 times higher away, but his walks and strikeouts per game were similarly disproportional, numbers that should be home/away neutral.

In ’07 he was 10-1 away, 9-5 home, with the same 2.5+ era h/a.

Have to say, I like this deal.

Yes, there’s the risk that Poreda and Carter turn into valuable pitchers who’ll be cheap for half a decade (and maybe, just maybe Richard sustains what he’s done over the past week), but how many of the prospects Kenny’s dealt over the years flourish? To get a still pretty young Cy Young-caliber pitcher back who is under control for several years is an impressive feat. (And to do it for a lot less than Halladay would have fetched — both in prospects and salary after next year — makes this the most notable deal in baseball this week.)

Are you guys crazy. Our rotation is now Buehrle, Peavy, Danks, Floyd!! That may be the best rotation in baseball. Yeah it hurts us a little this year, but Peavy is locked down until 2013! And who knows what Richard and Poreda will do? One things for sure, it’s highly unlikely either of them become a Peavy. And we kept probably our best pitching propsect (you could argue Hudson vs. Poreda). Thumbs up for me.

solid

this is a fantastic move… we trade 4 players that will never be Peavy for Peavy. Richard’s ceiling is probably a 3. Poreda could be a 3 or a Matt Thornton-type. Meanwhile, Kenny got us a 28-year-old Cy Young winner without arm problems. We all get fired up for prospects, and it sucks to give them away… but the truth is that Kenny (and Jerrry) reaffirmed their commitment to win now and in the short-term future.

If we can tread water until Peavy gets back this year, we could be dangerous. If the Sox have Buerhle and Peavy pitching Games 1,2,4,5,7 of a playoff series, this team can win this year.

by felton424 on Jul 31, 2009 4:14 PM CDT reply actions

The problem with Peavy is when he doesn’t get a strikeout, he’s a flyball hitter. Flyballs become homers in The Cell. Now Imis Jon Garlands groundballs. :(

I really have to like our deal more than the ones the Tigers and Twins made.

Peavy is a good deal long-term. Costly, but he’ll be worth it. Washburn’s been solid this year, and he’s a rental, but I really can’t believe he’ll continue to overperform, and the Tigers had to give up quite a bit. And the Twins? I suppose “mediocre veteran” is better than “shit veteran,” but that’s about all.

I hate this trade

I would not even sign Jake Peavy let alone trade ML arms for him. First, away from Petco he is a mid 4 ERA pitcher. That ERA in the NL screams league average. So we traded ML arms for a guy to make 18mm a year through 2012.

Kenny has stated the budget is tight so why not get a very expensive average SP so that we have little flexibility come FA in the coming years. On top of that, lets make sure it is an injury prone SP.

Peavy has been living off the 2007 cy young year for too long. Outside of that season his career road ERA is mid 4s. He is an average pitcher who will be the highest paid player on the Sox. He is a flyball pitcher in a park where this sort of pitcher should not be.

I hate this trade and want nothing to do with the team right now. Very furious.

poreda is far from crap. he will at least contribute out of a bullpen for years and if he develops any sort of secondary pitch he can start.

im going off of KW’s comments this season about budget

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

what numbers did i state that were incorrect?

i was a littel off in saying he makes 18mm a year. it is more like 17.3mm a year with the 4mm buyout in 2012 which i am going to assume happens.

my opinions about peavy being overrated are as valid as people’s opinion that he will be great like in 2007. i used his peripherals, home vs away splits and factored in his salary/injuries that this trade will backfire. i do not like it.

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

PItch for pitch, out for out, minute for minute. It’ll be uncanny and shit.

by Dongfang Hong on Jul 31, 2009 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

you didn't properly qualify any of those things

it looks like you didn’t want to like the trade and found reasons for it. home/away splits need to be compared to the normal pitcher. estimating the impact of his move from PETCO to the Cell can be done with park factors. and his peripherals are as good as you can ask for. the primary issues going forward are HR rate and injury. his career away HR rate was 1.23. depress his periphs downward 10% (DH adjustment?) and you’d have a line of 8.1 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 1.23 HR/9 for a FIP of 4.18. in that case, he’s probably not making his money, but he is making the Sox pretty dang good. his marginal value is higher b/c the Sox already have 3 formidable options at the top.

really, this isn’t that much different from the Vazquez trade.

i can sit back and spend hours digesting peavy’s numbers. it is clear he was amazing in petco and did average elsewhere except in 2007 in which he was good all around. i do not think he is washed up, he is just extremely overrated and not worth 18mm a year.

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

his career numbers are 9K/9 3BB/9 .9 HR/9

and his L/R splits are not all that notable. the park effects mainly manifest themselves as HR, so adjust as you see fit. but even with a 1.5 HR/9, he’s an above average starter. no one who pitches as many IP as he’s projected to over the next few seasons has a HR rate like that.

His last 3 full seasons he WAR was 5.1, 4 & 6.2

good summary of a handful of reasons that make me worry about peavy from bleacherreport:

There are plenty of reasons why I don’t like Jake Peavy. I’ve been doing “research” on him for months, wondering if he was going to come to the other side of town.

He has a 3.73 K/BB ratio at Petco, while only surrendering a home run per 56 plate appearances. On the road, those numbers shift dramatically to 2.53 K/BB and a home run per 30.6 plate appearances.

His ERA at Petco is 2.81 but on the road it’s 3.82
OPS is .120 higher on the road
WHIP is .21 higher on the road.

I would argue that he is definitely not the ace that everyone thinks he is. Yet, he will continue to be paid as such, all the way until 2012 and maybe 2013.

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

and if you do not factor in the magical 2007 season his road era is somewhere around 4.5……17.3mm a year for a 2 to 3 WAR at best is not what i like to see

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I havent use ace or 2 or 3 or whatever you want to call him.

Your projection method is rather odd. You choose the worst situation and somehow assume that every Peavy start will be in that circumstance. Where you in Chicago this year? Have you done all the parks on the road in the AL? Like the Tigers? Like the open air stadium up North next year? He’s 28 and coming to one of the best medical staffs in baseball and managed by Ozzie who does a pretty good job with pitchers.

He’s not carrying all the weight here. And when did 3.82 become terrible?

"Oh well back to work"

by Tdogg on Jul 31, 2009 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

i guess to better phrase my concerns….i was pretty heated gettin home from work and seeing this. in order of why i do not like the trade.

1. salary
2. injury
3. we are in a playoff race and just gave up a serviceable 5th starter for a guy who may not be back from the DL until september
4. he comes from petco

i do not think we overpaid for his type of talent but the salary plus injury would not even make me want to sign him at this rate. i would be comfortable with him making about 12 to 13mm but its whatever.

i also just hate hate hate his road splits, if they fluctuated somewhat or were closer to his average i wouldnt even care. the huge discrepancy is what scares me. like i said, i really hope my gut feeling about him is wrong.

i know all of your points are valid, but i believe my concerns are as well.

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Its okay to have concerns

The deal is not without risk, but if you have been a fan of this team you should expect this by now. Not to mention they have done pretty well there. Colin summed it up best below. Maybe Peavy doesn’t pitch all the way to his contract. So what. With the other 3 pitchers on his side the collective group will be quite nice.

by Tdogg on Jul 31, 2009 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions

economy, low salaries makes me think we could have gotten his output (or what i think it will be around which is high 3s low 4s) for near 10mm a year.

but that is all speculation. its not my money but if this closes the pocket books on adding a few solid pieces ill be peeved…pun intended

You might consider the other side of the rainbow sourpuss

Like if Peavy puts up a 5 WAR season next year. Erection.

then compare. plz.

by colintj on Jul 31, 2009 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

nah i get that. his road era is the 4th reason why i dont like the deal if i had to rank it.

but the splits coupled with his salary i just feel its a vast overpayment.

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

if the splits turn out to be an invalid reason

then you’re just worried about taking on salary. the Sox have ~60M committed in ’10 and need to find a CF, RF, DH and 5th starter. an additional 30M is still available and the market was buying wins along the lines of 3-5M per WAR last winter. i think we just resign Thome and Dye and then go with yet another stopgap in CF (8-10/1yr for Dye and Thome, plz no kotsay). 5th starter can be a fight between Torres, Hudson and some vets.

How can you not like this?

Honestly??? How is Jake Peavy washed up? He definitely isn’t. And with Carter… He is not better than Hudson because Hudson has been promoted/called up at to where Carter was still in Class A. It is not to hard to lead in strikeouts in Class A.

all Peavy heard was Chicago and thought he was gonna be a Cub

jut kidding

this sounds like a trade for the future, Peavy is under control till 2012 with a club option for 2013 at $22 million, Sox have a very good rotation for the future with Buehrle, Danks, Floyd, Peavy and most likely Torres, pretty dangerous if Peavy can comeback from his injury

good discussion all

time to get outta here. i hope im wrong about peavy but ive felt this way about him for a long while and i just dont see him amounting to a 15 to 17mm a year pitcher (apologies for factoring in 22mm option before). good luck all, and ill be at the game tomorrow if you want to yell at me…

by Franchise82 on Jul 31, 2009 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I was becoming very positive about Richard.

I thought he looked very good the last couple of starts. I’m not an MLB talent evaluator but based on very limited data it seemed like he turned a courner: more aggressive, decent secondary offering (curve or slider, don’t recall), better location.

I don’t know enough about Peavy to judge the trade but it would have been fun to watch Clayton develop.

Go Sox!

by luzinski on Jul 31, 2009 5:39 PM CDT reply actions

My take...

I think this is a great fucking deal! I don’t know how you can think otherwise. A week ago richard was on the way out of the rotation because he couldn’t go 5 innings. He had 2 great starts which raised his value.

Poreda, in my opinion, is a mini-Thornton

Russell is fucking awful

Carter? Well i don’t know… but he wasnt Hudson, Flowers, Danks or Viciedo…so what the hell do i care?

Jake Peavy is an ace. We already have an ace. We have 2 aces in waiting. Thats 4 aces baby! I love it. If we can’t pull through this year I think 2010 will be a cakewalk. I am all in on this trade!!!!!!!
