Thank You, Sir, May I Have Another White Sox Minor League Update

Organizational players. Kind of like Masset, everyone has them. Deemed by a club to not be worthy of much consideration for the majors and yet produce well enough that they become fan favorites with whichever affiliate they remain. David Cook has been with the Sox since 2003 and has produced a very nice minor league resume. Stefan Gartrell is of a more recent vintage but has also produced in his time in the Sox minors. Both have been assigned the task of ensuring the Barons win this season. Which of these two do you think should be, or should have been, given more consideration as a prospect?

true.

but mysteriously keeping him in A ball could also be hurting his value. it’s bizarre that they’ve treated two relatively similar talents so disparately.

Yeah . . . looks pretty much ready to me

Carlos Quentin, OF, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte)
Sunday’s stats: 2-for-2, RBI, BB
The biggest move made in the second half as for as the American League Central race goes might not come via a trade, but rather by the return of Quentin to the White Sox roster. Out since May 25th with a foot injury, Quentin made just one out in six plate appearances over the weekend in the International League, and in the league with nothing close to a dominant team, he could be the difference.

And Pittsburgh is a idiot?

Ian Snell, RHP, Pirates (Triple-A Indianapolis)
Sunday’s stats: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
Last week, Pittsburgh GM Neal Huntington labeled Snell’s contract extension as a mistake. At the time, it was certainly understandable based on Snell’s miserable year, but the right-hander has clearly figured out something out in the Minors, as he’s yet to allow an earned run in 14 innings while striking out 23 of the 50 batters he’s faced and limiting them to a .149 batting average.

2007 White Sox second rounder Nevin Griffith blew out his elbow and had Tommy John surgery about year ago, but is now back in action. He made two starts in June for Bristol in the Appy League, and while the numbers weren’t great (nine innings, 10 hits, seven runs, 7/7 K/BB), he threw well enough that the White Sox promoted him to the Sally League to begin July. He started for Kannapolis on July 3rd, throwing five innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Griffith is still a raw arm, but at his best he has a 90-95 MPH sinking fastball and shows a promising, if erratic, curveball. He has dropped his slider to reduce strain on the elbow, focusing on the curve and changeup as his secondary pitches.

T-Flow is an American. He salutes the flag. He plays the game clean. He suits up without fanfare or pretense. Oh, your Northern bastards laugh at Southern work ethic, but remember, T-Flow works under the radar without complaint. He needs no band playing “Hail to the Cheif”. He’d prefer you made no fuss over him. He will never be suspended 50 games for steroids. He does not sleep with womwn 16 years his junior (or, to be exact, 6 year-olds). He will never sleep with your mother, larry, no matter how often you beg him to, just for the autograph or tickets.

So T-Flow says to kiss his ass. He’ll prefer you do it privately, without attention, without a microphone that a “colin” would brandish and later disavow, without reporters around. Because he is a Southern American. And you Northern media wanabe blogger types can just suck his dick. OK?

THAT’s the point, Mr. Northern Barrister Fuck. OK?

Not a sleeper anymore

Dan Hudson, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Monday’s stats: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
An eigth-round pick last year out of Old Dominion, Hudson began the year with four dominant starts at Low-A Kannapolis, but as a polished college player in the Sally League, it failed to elicit much attention. 49 strikeouts in 45 innings at High-A Winston-Salem garnered some interest, but now that he’s at Double-A and continuing to pitch well, he’s looking more and more like a legitimate prospect. His low 90s sinker can occasionally get into the mid-90s, and his changeup has gone from a rarely used pitch in college into a true plus offering. His low three-quarters, almost slingy arm action leaves some scouts to question his ability to ever develop a quality breaking ball, but he has got enough to at least get there in a bullpen role.

With that motion they refer to, is there a comparable player that you know of, that has been able to develop a quality breaking ball, or overcome the lack of one to be a decent starter? I googled around to see what I could find, and it looks like he already had one in college, and that it was his best pitch. Was that just bad scouting?

Slider – Hard, 75-77 MPH breaking ball. A legitimate plus pitch, throws with conviction and can spot it in just about any count. Relies heavily on it. True slider with hard, tight, two plane break. Devastating against righties. Sometimes falls in love with it, hitters appear to sit on it. Must develop some complimentary pitches. Plus pitch.

there's a whole lot of conflciting info out there regarding hudson.

some said his slider was a plus pitch. some said his curve was a plus pitch. goldstein today called it a slurve and that it wasn’t very good. i frankly don’t know what to believe at this point about his breaking stuff.

First-round draft pick Jared Mitchell is close to signing with the White Sox, and he made his first visit Tuesday to U.S Cellular Field to meet team personnel.

The 20-year-old LSU outfielder, who was named the most valuable player of the 2009 College World Series, said he is eager to complete negotiations, perhaps as soon as today.

morgada
One of Shapiro’s biggest bright spots has been lefthander Bryan Morgado (Tennessee), who is actually not a junior but a redshirt sophomore. He was drafted in the third round by the White Sox after his disappointing spring, but he’s bounced back nicely this summer, posting a 21-3 strikeout-walk ratio through 10 scoreless innings over three appearances. Morgado was named the Cape League’s pitcher of the week after striking out 16 over two outings last week. Shapiro said Morgado has been sitting in the 92-94 mph range with his fastball and is showing improved command of his power breaking ball and changeup.

“He reminds me a lot, facially and size-wise, of Eric Milton, who we had when I was at Falmouth,” Shapiro said. “And he pitches the same way, he has the same repertoire of pitches. Eric was in the mid-90s, had a breaking (ball) and a changeup. Sometimes I have to shake my head because I feel like I’m coaching Eric again. Morgado’s breaking ball is kind of a slurve, kind of a tweener. He’s got to keep working on that, and his changeup, being able to throw it in fastball counts.”

I disagree

Orton was a good QB in chicago. 1. he wasnt grossman 2. he led 4th quarter drives in several games.

Not being Grossman doesn’t make you a good quarterback.

It definitely doesn't hurt,

I’m just saying being better than Rex Grossman doesn’t say much. Rex Grossman won games too, that doesn’t make him mediocre.

Orton led a few fourth quarter drives, I wouldn’t say several, and was actually very bad from the 2nd – 4th quarter outside of the last two minutes of halves. That just happens to be the same time that defenses are usually in a prevent. Considering Orton can only throw short passes obviously that works out pretty well for him.

I enjoyed this from KG: "Look, I think they should be excited for Beckham alone — how often to teams develop true stars?"

Also this (from the interviewer): “Thats why I wont say totally untouchable. If Pujols was offered for Beckham, he isn’t untouchable anymore.” Correct, Pujols would not be untouchable in that case.

not so hot sheet and dexter
NOT-SO HOT SHEET

Jeff Marquez, rhp, White Sox: The White Sox have had a lot of success in turning around the careers of seemingly failed pitching prospects. But Marquez looks to be one prospect who is on the wrong track. Picked up in the Nick Swisher trade, Marquez is 1-7, 10.35 in nine starts. He’s allowed 15 runs in his past seven innings and opponents are hitting .363 against him. Marquez’s last outing on Tuesday was especially bad—2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER—and he’s made it out of the fifth only once in nine tries.

MEN AMONG BOYS

Dexter Carter, rhp, White Sox: Carter dominated low Class A competition in his past two starts, posting a 23-2 K-BB mark in 15 innings. While he allowed four runs yesterday against Lakewood, he walked only one and struck out a season-high 14 batters. Whiffing batters in bunches is nothing new for the 22-year-old Carter, who on the season has a minor league-leading 120 strikeouts with 28 walks and a 3.62 ERA in 97 innings. But while righthander Dan Hudson (his college roommate and Pioneer League teammate last year) has already rocketed up to Double-A Birmingham, Carter has yet to budge from Kannapolis. It’s a bit of mystery as to why not, given how rapidly other prospects are advancing up the White Sox’ organizational ladder.

also a piece on wes whisler.

Sleeper Alert! [be sure to file this name away]

Dexter Carter, LHP, White Sox (Low-A Kannapolis)
Thursday’s stats: 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 14 K
The White Sox selected Old Dominion pitchers in the fifth and 13th rounds last year, and both have turned into very nice prospects. Dan Hudson has impressed scouts and is already at Double-A, while Carter now leads the minor leagues with 120 strikeouts in just 97 innings. 6-foot-6 and highly athletic, Carter sits in the low 90s, throws strikes and flashes a very good curve ball, and scouts say he’s the real deal as well.
