MLB All-Star Cast Released.
Mark Buehrle is the lone representative of the White Sox.
Curiously, Curtis Granderson made it over Jermaine Dye - despite much better numbers for JD.
JD's average is .291 to CG's .255
JD's slugging % is .562 to CG's .468
JD's OPS is .925 to CG's .807
JD has one more homer and 13 doubles to Granderson's 9. Plus JD has 12 less strike outs.
I don't get it.

Scottie Pods isn't on the Final Vote ballot, either.
I thought he deserved a shot in there.

This just shows why
All-Star voting doesn’t work. The popular players, not the deserving ones, are voted in.

have you ever seen a vote taken where someone didn't complain that it didn't work?

I think they'd have a good case on this matter.
The numbers don’t lie.

There should be riots in the streets of Chicago for this travesty!
But seriously, what’s the deal? Joe Morgan was complaining about Dye not being an All Star on ESPN last night. I get the sinking feeling that the NL is finally going to win this year.

Right
nice selection of stats . . . because # of doubles is so important. Maybe you should include position, defense, SB . . . you know the areas where Dye lacks significantly and where Granderson excels in comparison.

Jermaine Dye is slow, how good of you to mention.
When he’s got Granderson’s average beat by 40 points, I’d rather see him in the box than a guy who might be able to steal against the NL’s best if he can get on base. It’s the All-Star game, pinch-running for JD after a base hit is far from a crime.

whether selected or not,
dye wouldn’t be playing.
and granderson has been approximately a full win more valuable than dye.

Or maybe Dye should just pinch hit for Granderson after
he is done playing. That might make more sense.

Dye is not one of the top 3 RFs
Granderson is one of the top 3 CFs.
Comparing the two doesn’t make sense.

That makes no sense,either.

On an All-Star ballot, they'd both be listed only as OFs.

Which is why it makes no sense.
Thank you for clarifying “why”, BSB.

Regardless of how they are listed on the ballot
Which position they play, dramatically affects their value. If the idea is to put the best players at each position on the team, then taking into account whether a player is a centerfielder or rightfielder is appropriate.
If they are all listed as OFs on the ballot, I would view that as an issue with the ballot.
If you want to put the eight or nine best hitting OFs, regardless of defense on the field, then yes, Dye should be there over Granderson. (On a side note, did I use my commas correctly in that last sentence? It looks brutal)

The problem is that's not the idea of the All-Star game.
I think voters are more concerned with offensive production over defensive value when it comes time to filling out the ballot. While I agree that it gets awkward when a manager has to decide which RF to shift into CF during the game, I don’t see how it can be prevented as, again, the idea is to get the best stars (who are normally defined by their offensive production) out there.
