Q: I’m writing this immediately after the series at Kansas City, where Aaron Poreda got in another one inning. What is the White Sox thinking in bringing him up to the majors to pitch roughly an inning a week? The stories about him before the promotion (and since he was drafted) pretty consistently said he still needed a lot more work on his off-speed pitches. He certainly is not getting that in game situtations in the majors. — Bob; Santa Monica, CA

A: Well, the future is now. And the Sox see Poreda helping them now than anyone else in that 11th man role. When he’s not pitching, he’s working on his other pitches under the supervision of Don Cooper and Juan Nieves. This might cost him some innings, but his talents right now are better served at the major league level.

Since this is such an up and down season

I don’t feel out of place talking about next year, even though I still think we have a shot this year.

I’d be surprised to see Thome back in a sox uniform next year. He’s still hitting fairly well, but just watching him go around the bases is painful these days — there’s obviously something bothering him chronically.

But something I’ve been wondering about — why not extend Dye and DH him? While PK often comes up as a candidate for DH next year, his defense is still good at 1B, whereas Dye’s defense in RF is not. I haven’t looked to see what kind of FA market there is going to be in corner outfielders, and with a hobbled Q! moving him to RF is looking less likely.

I suppose DH’ing Q! would be another option, and moving Dye to left.

I’ll hang up and listen to your response.

Is it still the fourth inning?

by vince_ on Jul 7, 2009 8:05 AM CDT reply actions

Don't know what UZI (whatever) says about Dye, but he looks pretty good to me in RF.

About the same as last year in fact. And that was an uptick over ’07 when he had some nagging leg issues and appeared incapable of staying there.

He has been one of the

worst fielding RFs for a few years now . . . nothing has changed this year. He is no Brad Hawpe, but he is not good . . . at all.

I must watch the wrong games. I haven't seen him look "bad" more than a couple times at most.

Even more often, I’ve been surprised at his range.
But who am I to argue with the numbers…

It's worked pretty well for Sox LFers over the years...

Luzinski, Kittle, even Q at times have “looked” brutal. Lee “looked” improved over time.
Dye just doesn’t “look” that bad to me.

(Not arguing, explaining the personal difference.)

Slowly back out of the room, Chi.

You won’t win this one. Nor should you, if you have any belief in fielding metrics.

by rhythm on Apr 14, 2009 1:45 PM EDT

by winningugly on Jul 7, 2009 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions

He doesn't have to

Worst OF is a harsh way to put things. I believe in UZR so I won’t debate it. But he’s right, Dye doesn’t look bad. He doesn’t take horrible routes to balls. His arm is not weak. He’s just a slow and rangeless fielder who has to make spectacular plays on ones a younger guy would get to with both feet upright. His slow feet improves the chances of triples.

So when you think of worst don’t think of “smarts” because there are plenty of goofs with makeup speed that do “worst” things all the time.

"I'm just here to provide street cred and a rosy outlook"- translation - unemployed life coach

by Tdogg on Jul 7, 2009 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Another way to put it

If it weren’t for his ability to do the things he can control very, very well, he wouldn’t be out there playing anymore with the way his speed has declined with age. But he can’t control how fast he can run — nature has taken its toll, and that hurts him defensively.

Is it still the fourth inning?

by vince_ on Jul 7, 2009 9:24 AM CDT up reply actions

You are sure argumentative these days.

My caveat was “if you have any belief in fielding metrics”. If not, or it does not form the substantive portion of your assessment of performance, then OK, “looks” count. Of course the wise old head who knows the tendencies of hitters (and, more importantly, his pitchers) can gain an extra step or so in positioning. And of course he throws to the correct base and makes few mental errors. So he’s better than a more athletic/younger guy like BA, which isn’t saying that much.

We’re a pack of a-holes.

Sorry Chief

really wasn’t trying to direct anything at you for argument. I was mainly responding to Chiburb and why Dye didn’t “look” bad.

"I'm just here to provide street cred and a rosy outlook"- translation - unemployed life coach

by Tdogg on Jul 7, 2009 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

By the way

The whole “bad” outfielder thing is one of the problems of generically labeling the metric results. I’m not smart enough to label it better, but regular folks will always have issues understanding how on earth someone could be the worst at something they view doing things decently.

Dye’s obviously not “bad” for the reasons listed above. Maybe we term it as not as valuable. Maybe its as simple as always explaining everything that goes into the measurement. We just throw “worst” out there so often, it almost implies wrong doing by the fielder.

"I'm just here to provide street cred and a rosy outlook"- translation - unemployed life coach

by Tdogg on Jul 7, 2009 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

did you just say JD is a better fielder than BA?

and yeah, I agree that JD sucks physically, but mentally he’s been great. almost always a great jump… and thats all you really need to look good. a guy getting to every ball even with a bad jump and makeup speed is gonna look worse.

Well I’d imagine AL East teams are out, so beyond that I guess only a few teams out there could afford him and are looking to add SP and have the prospects, so that does help the White Sox. Who else would be a player? Phillies, Brewers, Tigers? I know the Rangers have cash issues, but I guess they might fit too.

I’d be willing to throw in Flowers or Danks or Viciedo with Poreda and Richard for him.

Not that I think it’ll actually happen, but if we did make the trade, I just don’t see Beckham going.

Which is stupid. Billingsley, given his current performance at the major league level and cost is more valuable than Halladay.

Read an intv. w/ the guy who manned the sound board

His name is Eddie Kramer. Anyway, he was stationed behind the stage in a small trailer and had no way to communicate with musicians when they were off-key or out-of-sync. Kramer said "It was three days of drugs and hell.

I saw that, maybe a different intv. Made it clear he only mastered the "bonus" material

on this new edition. But I remember the working conditions he described, and it’s no small miracle there was ANY recording of the event.

RE: Dye fielding

I don’t think Dye is horrendous out there in RF, it’s not exactly a big outfield either. He’s probablyi hurt by playing next the utter shit we throw out there in CF most nights the past few years.

That said, I believe that UZR is fairly accurate and I also believe that with my own eyes I see a slow player that gets decent jumps, takes decent reads, and has a strong (if a slow release) throwing arm.

When he’s OPS 900 at age 33 though I’m not inclined to complain much.

It doesn’t matter what he says, James is just going to be labeled as media-savvy. People will roast him the whole year for not signing an extension to prevent the circus, but Jordan would have done the same thing under the current salary structure, and he happily held Reinsdorf hostage the last two years of his Bulls career.

I just don't see him leaving about $40 mill on the table and dissing his home city

Under the current salary structure, he gets an extra year by staying w/ cleveland and moar money each year. Plus, the Knicks are just a joke.

Formerly Crede's Crew

by Q!'s Qrew on Jul 7, 2009 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s leaving 40 million on the table by going somewhere else.

I mean with his greatness it may be irrelevant, but if he went to New York, LA or to a lesser extent Chicago or some of the other bigger markets, he’d get more marketing money. Or if he goes somewhere with a better tax situation, like Orlando or Miami, he’d be well off too.

Same with joining a team that is better put together than the Cavaliers. Similar to Kobe w/ Gasol, even Lebron could use some help. If some franchise offers him a better chance of winning, he’s more likely to make more money there too. I just think financially, it’s not a 40 million loss, or probably a loss at all.

Hell, just the idea of him entering a new market may be enough to boost his value to advertisers over the 40 million difference over the length of the contract. Similar to Jordan, his greatest value isn’t as a basketall player any more. He could be the greatest player of all time, he’s charismatic and just entering his prime, he can get that 40 million somewhere else if that’s what he’s worried about. If he stays, it’s not a financial decision.
