Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

The Diamondbacks traded right-hander Tony Pena to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league infielder Brandon Allen.

Allen, 23, has split time this season between Doulbe-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte, combining to hit .281 (85-for-302) with 16 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and 43 RBI. Over his six-year career, he has hit a combined .259 (545-for-2,101) with 124 doubles, 19 triples, 84 home runs and 344 RBI in 569 games.

Pena was 5-3 with a 4.24 ERA (16 ER in 34.0 IP) in 37 games with the D-backs this season. He was 16-13 with a 4.08 ERA (101 ER in 222.2 IP) in 209 career games with Arizona. Pena finishes his D-backs career with a franchise-record 63 holds.

Seems like a lot

to give up for a pitcher of that caliber, but what do I know?

He's a good pitcher

No doubt about that. But Brandon Allen straight up for a fucking reliever?

He's good?

1.53 WHIP this season and ERA of 4.24 and his career ERA is over 4. As a reliever.

So does this mean:

Someone to the DL?
Gobble to somewhere else?
Poreda or Carassco to rotation?
Another trade?

Very strange trade. Damn it, Kenny.

WTF?

Allen seems like a lot to give up for a fairly bad middle reliever.

Maybe Kenny was feeling bad about how the Vazquez for Young trade turned out for AZ and felt he had to equalize things.

From BP:

2008: “Along with Doug Slaten, Pena was the NL West champions’ cleaner, the guy who inherited ugly situations and fixed them. That was all the more impressive given how close he was to not even having a career under his pre-Age-gate nomme de mound, Adriano Rosario. Is it ironic given the other Tony Pena’s running around out there, that this one’s found a home in the equally nondescript realm of middle relief only after reverting to that name? If so, the irony might not last; Pena’s hard heat and solid slider make him the best closer candidate of all of the guys who were knocking around in front of Jose Valverde before the closer was dealt to Houston.”

2009: “Pena became a different pitcher in 2008, reducing his walk rate dramatically while also giving up many more hits. The problem? His once-excellent fastball dropped to the 90-93 mph range. He tinkered with his mechanics throughout the season, delivering occasional spurts of dominance, but overall his season left most scratching their heads about a guy who once looked like he might be the answer at closer, but clearly wasn’t, last year.”

He’s also only 27. I’m ok with this.

It's reasonable to comment on attendance

Agreed. Just saying it like it is.
Though in referencing the Dodger series, he honestly should comment on the premium ticket prices. That was the unspoken (at least from the article) thought and the real issue for that specific series. Too bad too, the ’59 team reunion and retrospective was a nice thing to do.

by metasox on Jul 7, 2009 10:31 PM CDT reply actions

ask someone and they'll answer. some reporters do more complete work than others.
Weather was not an issue on any of those days, and the crowds weren’t hampered by school still being in session. So, what was the issue leading to the relatively low turnout?

Brooks Boyer, the White Sox vice president and chief marketing officer, quickly pointed to the problem.

“We overpriced it. That was the major thing,” Boyer told MLB.com. "We set the prices in October. We looked at the series and said that it’s a quality-quality opponent in town and one that is not in town all that often. They also have a drawing superstar.

“But we set those in October. The economy has worsened since then, when we priced it. You get to this series, and where are people going to spend money? They are going to spend it (the following) weekend, for the Crosstown series (with the Cubs). We simply overpriced the tickets. We made a mistake in October of last year.”
