White Sox Minor League Update Pours One For Its Homies
Per usual, Kenny Williams was wheeling and dealing prior to the trading deadline. First he sent Brandon Allen for Tony Pena and then packaged Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, Adam Russell and Dexter Carter for Jake Peavy. So which of these players will the White Sox regret trading the most?

though I think Richard, Poreda, and Allen are more or less the same when it comes to risk/upside/etc, Pena is hit or miss himself.

see? player development is easy.
Our area scout Chuck Fox had liked Carter since high school. In 2008 at Old Dominion University, Carter scuffled, going 3-4 with an 8.76 ERA in 12 games. But Fox still liked the kid and liked his arm. He recommended we draft Carter, and we took him in the 13th round despite the poor college season.
Newly signed, Carter reports to Great Falls.
During his very first bullpen session, the kid’s pitches are all over the place.
Curt Hasler, our pitching coach at Great Falls, sees a mechanical problem immediately and makes a suggestion.
He draws a line on the mound and says, “Make sure your foot lands on or past this line.”
Carter, to his credit, makes the adjustment on the very first pitch.
Everyone’s eyes lighted up. We were on to something.

I went with Richard
Best chance to be a middling starter. Allen has upside but how much? A good first basemen is still a first basemen. I don’t think he’ll ever put up Ryan Howard numbers. I still like Pena seemingly more than everyone else, but not for Allen.
You can see why they like Pena
he appears to have some really good stuff. I know his splits versus lefties are pretty ugly but I think he’s got the stuff to be just fine against them — that fastball appears to have some plus plus movement and so far he’s sitting from 92-94. Definitely agree, though, that giving up Allen for him is a bit of an overpay.

**Jared Mitchell Watch: .286/.400/.429 in 13 games for Kannapolis, but with some interesting splits. He’s hitting .323/.432/.516 against right-handers, but just .182/.308/.182 against lefties. Yes, the sample sizes are way too small to mean much at this point, but the platoon differential is worth tracking considering the rawness scouts detected in his game at LSU. He’s drawn eight walks in 50 plate appearances, a strong ratio in line with his college numbers, but has also struck out 14 times, also in line with his college numbers.

Interesting splits?
Weak against lefties, strong against righties, isn’t that more or less what you would have expected from a still somewhat raw lefty hitter.
so then it's something that should be watched to discern when the rawness turns to refinement?
not everything interesting has to be surprising.

mid-season minor league defensive ratings
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/blog_article/midseason-totalzone-minors/
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Now these are some interesting numbers
Danks -7 runs (that’s a negative 7, not a dash)
Viciedo +3 runs (plus 6 per 150 games)
Shelby (when in centre) +10 runs (an insane +28 per 150 games)
Eduardo Escobar scored highly (it’s a shame he can’t hit)
Jon Gilmore scored very poorly (it’s double a shame he can’t hit)
Beckham was a +6 at SS in very limited action
Brent Morel was basically the same as Dayan
When racking the brain for names to lookup it dawned on me just how few notable hitting prospects we actually have.
by The Big Hurt on Aug 3, 2009 11:30 PM CDT up reply actions
Are you sure with Danks?
This is what I am looking at (Defense link in the upper righthand corner)… and it seems the -7 is just from his time at W-S… if you take all the data together and average it out based on chances he is only -1.85… or am I doing it wrong?
@ Birmingham +1
Very average — surprising?
But what about F-I-E-L-D-E-R-S?
so it looks like there's some evidence that he could be a plus defender at 2B or 3B
i assume an above average college/minors SS is an avg-ish major league SS. some time shortly, it looks like he’s going to be the Sox best position player.

If we discount half an MLB season, or 80 games, is 100 really that different? Scouting reports are one thing, but actual +/- data (especially above) needs to be taken with a serious grain of salt.
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
i think i do
i certainly bitch enough about people using UZR for more than it’s capable of. i don’t think i’m really violating the rule, just summing up the (little) evidence to date. it’s not really that hyperbolic to say that beckham should be our best position player shortly. there aren’t any 3+ WAR types outside of possibly Q! and Alexei on the team.

Ok... Hudson is starting to take my expectations to scary places
But there is no way he breaks ST 2010 with the team right? But if he doesn’t have any major hiccups in the next month he’s gotta be starting next year in Charlotte, maybe waiting in the wings as a potential 5th starter if/when one of Contreras/Garcia/Colon/Torres flames out?
The way he is getting people out from both sides of the plate… is he using his change-up much on the lefties or is he still just dominating with fastball/slider? I mean if the change-up is effective in AA, can he have that much to prove in AAA?
You haven't heard?
It’s his gyro-knuckle-slurve that he is dominating with.
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
Rick Hahn mentioned
On The Score the other day that they are going to legitimately look at Hudson as a possible option this year, but I assume that would only be if Count/Colon/Torres fail. I think Torres is the frontrunner for the 5th starters role next year but Hudson’s definitely the wildcard.
It would be nice if Torres steps up a bit
and Hudson could finish this year in AA and get a couple months in AAA to start next year . . . similar to the Tommy Hanson road. A lot of levels to jump in one year . . .

Basically, as long as Hudson keeps putting goose eggs up on the scoreboard, he’s going to keep earning a mention. Now 7-0 in nine starts since his promotion to Double-A, Hudson has fired 26 scoreless innings in his last four outings, while giving up just 12 hits, walking four and striking out 30. With above-average command of above-average stuff, he’s now the best pitching prospect in the system after the Sox sent four arms to the Padres for Jake Peavy.

What I think is that
when a pitcher has a good fastball, he’s more likely to develop a good breaking pitch at some point. The same things that let them throw a baseball hard velocity-wise should allow them to throw a hard breaking ball. Even if you can’t, a breaking pitch will be made a lot better by the fastball. Thornton’s slider isn’t exactly great, but the fact that he throws his fastball so hard and so often makes hitters take awful swings at it.
by Daniel Berlyn on Aug 5, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Poreda needs a change up more than anything
which in theory should be easier to throw than a slider. But he just looked rough in those few outings.
THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY
I think for pitchers who throw hard
it’s pretty difficult to develop a good changeup. It might have something to do with leaving it up because of asserting yourself on most pitches. Richard never really could locate his.
by Daniel Berlyn on Aug 5, 2009 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions
that should be testable, no?
just offhand, Hamels and Danks should count, right? they’ve got plus lefty velo. Poreda wasn’t lighting up the gun any more so than Danks when he was up.
THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY
They don't have Richard's velo
Poreda has at least a couple of MPH on them both. It just seems like it’s harder for pitchers that throw hard to have a consistent change, and it’s usually behind a young pitcher’s breaking pitch in development. A good change technique is more difficult, I would guess. There are so many grips, and getting the deception and motion down probably takes a lot of practice. For guys who throw hard, it seems like the same thing that allows them to throw a fastball hard allows them to get good rotation and speed on their breaking pitch.

Any word on if Daniel Hudson was promoted to AAA? I heard a rumor he was, but I don’t see that in any transactions. Cooper was on 670 the other day (either Thurs or Fri) and said that they were considering a AA pitcher for one of the 5th starter spots coming up. I’m sure he was referring to Hudson. If Torres fails and DH continues to pitch well I think they may give him a shot.
