One more thought about the peavy trade
Something that rarely comes up is how long it can take to figure out when to give up on a prospect. It’d be nice if it were a world where every prospect was like Beckham and you instantly knew they were good. But you had to have ‘07 Danks and Floyd to have ’08 Danks and Floyd. We kept BA around for 4 years before giving up on him. Hell, Jerry Owens (’nuff said).
So maybe Poreda, Richard, and Carter will eventually be good major leaguers, but if they do, I imagine there will be a whole lot of inconsistency in the meantime, which translates into losses. There is certainly an opportunity cost since to evaluate them you have to play them, which takes up roster spots that better players could take.
Unless Peavy’s arm falls off (which can happen with any pitcher at any time), he is probably a good bet to be better than any of those guys will be, and another part of this trade is we don’t have to sit around for the next couple years to figure out if Richard really can stick as a starter at the major league level.

in my opinion it is one of the only statistic that matters because it puts runs on the board. the alternative is a crede-like pop out or a Swisher called 3rd strike. I’m not much of a stat geek. I do understand the importance of OBP and all that crap…..but if nobody knocks in the runners who are on base being on base isn’t worth shit.

It’s totally dependent on the guys ahead in the lineup to get on base. You wouldn’t argue a player sucks if he’s constantly getting on base, but there’s no one to drive in.

look at the sox the last 4 years. they got men on all the time and nobody can drive them in. if they had a true RBI man, like Albert Belle, Frank Thomas or Hank Aaron…those runs would score.
