How about that, sportsfans? Also: odds this gets up before anyone else's is like 1 in 3.

EDIT: Apparently UG, larry and Cheat are all dead. Anyway, in case you were wondering about the contract:

If 1 WAR is worth 3.5M (and pre-economic crash it was 4.4M) that means a 3 WAR player is worth 10.5M per year on the open market. His contract valuation is about 11.5M on average over the whole of the contract (that doesn't pro-rate '09). As Matt pointed out, there should be some inflation over the life of that contract, so the difference in the numbers is basically negligible.

And in case you were wondering what kind of "down" year he's having, let's check the following math. The conversion from RF/LF to CF is 10 runs and he’s a career 14 UZR150, which suggests he’d be a +4 CF. To continue WARring:

0 BRAA+ 4 FRAA + 2.5 pos adj + 20 rep = 26.5 RAR or ~2.5 WAR over 150 games. The Sox will get him for 1/3 of that 150 games. In 2009, UZR has the Sox at 9.6 FRAA per 150 games. I am somewhat skeptical of that to say the least, but it almost doesn't matter as White Sox CFs have managed a pathetic .269 wOBA, good for -23 BRAA, dead last in all of baseball. Through 100 games, that's basically replacement level. So adding Rios should be worth nearly a full win (.833).

Sox were going to be paying the contract either way.

I don’t think there was a chance Toronto would eat any of it. That’s why he was there in the first place.

there are more not on your team but you get my point.

Then Tell me who next years leadoff hitter is.

If you are on board with Pods coming back next year, then you need to hop off the 2005 train and come to reality. He is too much of a liability in the outfield and has been absolute garbage this past month. I rather have Getz, who is pretty much the slower version of Podsednik, who can at least play defense then have a pie thrower playing either LF or CF next year.

by No Pressure on Aug 10, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

anyway, leadoff is a non friggin issue.

the research shows you if you put your best five hitters at the top in some order, the marginal difference between that and an optimal lineup is negligible. so seriously. read more.

Sorry for not having the colintj widget installed on my computer

but this season has shown that this teams needs a player that can get on base and is quick. I mean, we were desperate enough to even call up Pods right? Of course this argument is pretty pointless, since this will be Dye’s last season in RF if he remains in Chicago and i for one would be shocked if Kenny doesn’t obtain a corner outfielder that can leadoff.

Enjoyed this comment on MLBTR...part about the offseason so true

There must an arrest warrant out for Kenny Williams by now. I really don’t get how the Jays can just give a 28 year old OF hitting his prime with 20/20 potential. What else is Ricciardi going to do to address the team???? There are no outfielders on the market this offseason even close to as good as Rios is. This is why the Jays are perennial basement dwellers.

Sure there is

Rios can handle CF for 2010. Why not? And if his bat doesn’t bounce back, that 91 OPS+ looks a helluva lot better in CF than in RF.

I haven’t looked at Rios’ batting stats very closely this year. Has he been BIP unlucky this year? The three-year OPS+ decline is somewhat worrisome, no?

by CWSKeith on Aug 10, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. I'm saying JD/Thomer/Pods/Rios don't all fit if Q is in LF/DH.

Is this really that complicated?

2009 – Q, PodsRios, Dye. Rios is also Q insurance.
2010 – Q, Rios, Dye. Pods (or whoever) as 4th OFer, Thome at DH.
2011 – Q, Danks?Mitchell?FA?, Rios. ____ at DH.

by Jackkoho on Aug 10, 2009 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't.

OK, this is a risk:

1. Rios is an actual CF. We’re paying a boatload of $ for him. He’s Hispanic, fast, and owns a glove he can use. His arm is masculine.
2. Pods is not a CF, has a great looking wife (Ozzie’s wife is jealous), is white, and has not been introduced to his CF glove. His arm is a wet noodle.

Rios. He plays the rest of the year.
3. Pods turns into a pumpkin soon.

I’d hate to play poker v KW. He stared him down for 3 days and didn’t even have to throw in Josh Fields.

This is fucking fantastic, we made a MAJOR upgrade to talent (a 3 WAR player) and didn’t have to give up ANYTHING – not one lousy A ball pitcher, not one single draft pick.

Dese keed is 28, he gives you a league average bat, has +speed, and he goes a long way to addressing the biggest weakness on the team – the defense. All that for only $10mm a year, of which we have plenty of money to spend.

I didn’t think this would happen, it’s too good to be true. Toronto must be in really desperate straits financially.

For you youngsters listening at home...

The White Sox acquired outfielder Alex Rios from the Blue Jays on Monday, when Toronto awarded a waiver claim placed last week. Chicago assumes responsibility for the remainder of Rios’ current contract.
Following Major League Baseball’s July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, teams need to pass a player through waivers if they want to try to deal them to another club. It is not uncommon for every team to expose much of its roster to waivers in order to gauge interest from around the league. Players acquired before Sept. 1 are eligible for postseason rosters.
If a player is claimed by another organization, a team can either pull the player off waivers, let the claiming team add him to its roster or discuss a trade with the claiming club. In Rios’ case, parting with the underperforming right fielder was a way to shed salary for a Toronto club that has slipped to fourth place in the American League East.
Rios — a two-time American League All-Star — is signed to a seven-year extension worth nearly $70 million that runs through the 2014 season and includes a $13.5 million club option for ‘15. Rios is under contract for $5.9 million this year and is scheduled to earn $9.7 million next year. Over the 2011-14 campaigns, Rios’ salary jumps to between $12 million to $12.5 million annually.
This season, the 28-year-old Rios has fallen below expectations, hitting .264 with a .317 on-base percentage, 14 homers and 62 RBIs in 108 games for the Blue Jays. Toronto’s top outfield prospect, Travis Snider, who is currently with Triple-A Las Vegas, has the ability to play right field.

"Baseball is like church. Many attend, few understand."

I wonder if this acquisition comes with any JR mandates

I think I remember hearing some mumbo jumbo about JR telling Paxson that he would only approve the Brad Miller/John Salmons deals last season if Pax assured him they would make it out of the first round of the playoffs.

I realize this is a ridiculous thing to demand and a ridiculous thing to agree to, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear something similar in the coming days/weeks.

In other news, I’m fucking stoked!

THANK YOU NATE SILVER, TECHNOLOGY IS THE TOPS
