Defense matters, even if it's not as easy to measure and analyze as offense, and Rios is an elite defensive outfielder. Assuming that he bounces back to his previous norms offensively--and at 28 years old he should--Rios is among the best all-around outfielders in baseball. Focusing on his OPS doesn't even begin to tell the story, which is why he's "an underrated outfielder in his prime."

i'm excited that we'll have at least one quality defender roaming the outfield

but the fanshot gave me an excuse to play around with fangraphs, and i was surprised to see paulie ranked 4th in fielding (MLB, UZR/150).

Hick just off the bus in Chicago walks into a bar...

Notices 2 women in the corner and tells the bartender to get them a drink. Bartender says he should save his money, they’re lesbians. Hick scratches his head and asks what that means? Bartender smirks and says ask them. Hick walks over, introduces himself, and repeats what he asked the barkeep. They look at each other in disbelief, finally one says she’ll make this real simple for him: we don’t suck dick, we only eat pussy.
Hick ponders, ponders, and finally yells to the bartender to “get us 3 lesbians a drink”!

Youth

I’ve heard talk about the same thing, but I don’t think bringing in an aging 3B is the right move. I’m all in favor of moving Ramirez back to 2B, phenomenal last season, and Beckham to SS, but why not have Viciedo take over at 3B? Possibly, keep Beckham at 3B and bring in a young SS, still moving Ramirez to 2B. I woudn’t be opposed to keeping Getz and Beckham and trading Ramirez. I’ve been real disappointed in Ramirez this season. Maybe, my expectation where too high after watching him play last year. To me, Ramirez doesn’t have the arm strength to play SS.

by bigz38fan on Aug 11, 2009 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Were we watching the same Che at 2B last year?

He made a few incredibly athletic plays,

and then would eff up the routine ones. Liek the one I saw from 100’ away in the ALDS in Tampa last year. He did OK with a new position. It’s why he never was seriously considered for 2B this spring. He’s a SS. Not a 2B or CF. He’s OK at SS. He’s not a good 2B.

by picktoclick on Aug 11, 2009 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

You'd go from league average to unknown at the same time you just upgraded the middle of the outfield?

If Beckham can play SS (your assertion) he can certainly learn/improve at 3B. His power will improve enough to warrant a stay there.

Che, at league average SS, is a major bargain. Especially with even the slightest improvement in OBP or throws.

by Chiburb on Aug 11, 2009 4:42 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Cheap

Just because a guy is cheap doesn’t mean you have to stick with him. I’m not sure Ramirez knows/understands enough about playing SS to be great. A big part of playing SS is being able to position the infield according to pitch being thrown. I.E. If an inside pitch is coming, you don’t want your 3B playing 10 feet off the line.

by bigz38fan on Aug 11, 2009 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

He'll learn.

It’s his first year as a ML SS, 2nd year in the bigs. He’ll be fine.

Ramirez not having the arm strength

to play SS rivals GITs drunk driving posts as the dumbest I have seen on here . . . strength is not his problem, accuracy is.

And Viciedo will not be ready next year, so scratch that plan. And if you dont like Ramirez’s D at SS, you will most certainly not like Viciedo’s at 3B.

It is time to let Dye get some DH time.

Just a couple things:

1) For the morons who I keep hearing on sports talk radio mostly and in other places who say Quentin now shouldn’t play or play far less should somehow try and remove their heads from their asses so they can breathe adequately 2) This should be a damn good team going forward if they don’t make any stupid moves for the next several years.

Carlos Quentin, last two weeks...

.342/.432/.684, with three home runs.

As long as Quentin is healthy enough to swing the bat, you find a place for him.

lately the contrast between beckham and dye's

AB’s have been difficult to watch. It may be time for Quentin to reclaim his number three spot. Pods, beckham, quentin would be a pretty solid 1,2,3 if pods keeps it up. so far tho everyone seems to be still waiting for that time pods regresses to ‘08 form. at the very least, thome’s gonna see some good pitches in the 4 spot after pitchers work that hard on beckham and quentin.

A little disappointed that Rios is not in there tonight......my guess is that he will be

tomorrow night and JD will have an evening off against King Felix.

Pretty sure Freddy is pitching tonight in Charlotte…..is this right?

Anyway….good luck to him.

Definitely could make a case for our 5th starter 2010 if he shows decently down the stretch for the big club.

rios and peavy illustrate why i did not believe the white sox' offseason moves had much of anything to do with money

Some generous praise for kdub from BCB

The Sox are blessed with great payroll management… Dumping Vasquez, Swisher, Cabrera, Crede and Uribe (none of whom have been missed) saved $32 million. This winter the contracts of Dye, Thome, Contreras and Dotel come off the books, saving roughly $38 million.

Alex Rios is a good bet for the Sox. They didn’t give up anything to get him. No talent and no future draft picks like would be the case if they signed a type A free agent.

Rios is only 28 years old and has big time talent. He also has tasted success in the past. There is little to prevent him from reclaiming his spot as one of the best defensive outfielders in the game to go along with 25 HR power and good run production totals. Add him to the emerging mix of Beckham, Quentin, Ramirez and Getz and you have successfully made headway in rebuilding on the fly. Of course it doesn’t hurt to have Peavy, Floyd, Danks and Buerhle fronting your rotation either.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa... Time out Greenbay. Tell that fucking bullshit to the tourists

by onlysoxfaninboston on Aug 11, 2009 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

seems like the white sox have sort of missed vazquez and swisher

you know, kind of part of the reason they went and got peavy and rios.

break out the vodka

give the man a shot and watch him sweat through his uni in the first inning . . . good times. It will certainly be interesting to see where his stuff is . . . 9 Ks tonight is encouraging, though that is discounted by facing Anderson 3×.
