OT music thread: indie rock, when it used to be the electric white boy blues
I experienced another whoosh when MM posted a Mountain Goats reference that slipped by me...I've fallen behind the indie rock times...I've become old and crotchety and everybody's an asshole in my eyes. They just don't make indie music like they used to (big exception is No Age). And if there was a WCKG for indie rock, I would be the DJ playing "The Freed Pig" by Sebadoh at least 5x from 9-5, Monday through Friday.
Anyway, I recently made a mix that comprised the nuggets from the artists I used to listen to heavily from 1988 up to 1999. Neither is the time period nor the artists I chose were random. For example, I left out REM, the Replacements, the Smiths, Housemartins, Go-Betweens, most of the groundbreaking indie music from SST and Touch and Go. In proper order:
Tortoise - Gamera
Stereolab - Au grand jour
Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube
Heavenly - Tool
The Clean - I wait around
Teenage Fanclub - Everything flows
Pavement - Date with IKEA
Superchunk - It's so hard to fall in love
Dinosaur Jr - Just like heaven
Vaselines - Son of a gun
Guided by Voices - Teenage FBI (alternative version)
Belle and Sebastian - The state i'm in
Sea and Cake - Jacking the ball
Modest Mouse - Polar opposites
Pixies - Wave of mutilation (surf version)
Jesus and Mary Chain - Just like honey
Other notes: I'm holding back on the shows I'm seeing this fall because I'm saving up for a big move during the winter months, but I will see the Dirty Three and Os Mutantes (!!!) in September and October.
Cheers,
OSFIB

Nice List
I’ve been revisiting a lot of indie music from the 90s as well. Here’s a couple in the same vein as the ones you listed:
Pavement – Gold Soundz
Tortoise – DJed
Modest Mouse – Truckers Atlas
Dismemberment Plan – The City
Spacemen 3 – Walkin With Jesus

a few more
Sugar aka “Bob Mould’s other band” – Copper Blue
Eleventh Dream Day – Stalled Parade
neutral Milk Hotel – On Avery Island
That era has held up pretty well I think…every time I hear Gaslight Anthem, I just think “not as good as the ’Mats”

meat puppets up on the sun
husker du flip your wig
replacements hootenanny
rem fables
copper blue, i remembered at the time it came out and it felt it was too poppy. i don’t what i was thinking, every song on there is solid

grant hart has a new album out
curious to hear it, if only because he hasn’t released anything in 12 years. poor guy looks like death these days though.

i never heard his solo stuff
and never knew about the tensions (or the baggage hart was carrying) until i read azzerad’s book. personally i think hart helped mould grow musically. i haven’t listened to bob mould’s recent solo material either, but i would expect his music to remain moody and tense. did you go to any of the sugar shows at the metro in ‘92-’93?

this band could be your life?
it’s been a bit, but wasn’t Hart more of a footnote in that? or maybe I was just reading it for Mould.

he was integral to Husker Du
but has definitely become a footnote since then, maybe on purpose.

saw them at the Aragon in '94
Still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Moulds recent solo stuff is nothing special, sounds like he’s run out of ideas. He still puts it over live though.

if there was a wckg for indie rock
i’d probably never discover any new music. although that seems to be happening anyway as my available free time to find and check out new bands seems to dwindle every year. i need to reprioritize. anyway, here’s quick list of 90’s faves:
silkworm – couldn’t you wait
guided by voices – as we go up we go down
pavement – texas never whispers
nothing painted blue – drinking game
dinosaur jr. – i ain’t sayin’
wedding present – corduroy
jawbreaker – want
built to spill – fling

You people are all lunatics.
LUNATICS! THE most creative and innovative period in musinc was the mid-late ’60’s-late ’70’s (no, not disco). Lyrically and musically (synthesizers, electric, wacky sounds – think even Laurie Anderson) it was fanstastic. Unless you are talking about rap, I respectfully disagree.

it wasn't meant to be a dig at those outside that time period.
i just realized that’s where the bulk of my music comes from. plus i used to play “pick a decade you have to listen to for the rest of your life” game. it isnt an accident that Guided By Voices and Wu Tang Clan are tied at the top of my last.fm.

I'd pick the late 90s, early 2000s
Nothing but Master P, Sisquo, boy bands, and Britney Spears.
The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.

You were into Laurie Anderson?
I’ll give you props old man…you’re right IMO, that was a golden era in popular and rock music. That era would require numerous music threads!
But that period also had it’s excesses and rock music was considered less accessible and more elitist. Most of the bands I mentioned above were inspired by punk rock from the late 70s but were innovative and defying the punk conventions of simple 3 chord rock like the Ramones. If you liked what they called progressive rock back in the day, you might like Tortoise, they’re from Chicago. Look up the album TNT in particular, it’s great for starters.

I liked Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, NY Dolls,
Sex Pistols, etc. Loved the punk scene. Also, though, though early Dire Straits and Cars were the rage because it was innovative.
’Course now I listen to Judas Priest at ear-splitting volume (or so the wife says).
Will check out Tortoise.

I'm glad you got Guided by Voices and Dinsosaur Jr. in there
I also feel that Yo La Tengo was (and still may be) considered one of the most important “Indie” bands of the time.
In case you haven’t had the pleasure, check out Adorable

Anyone planning on going to this in November? I think they have two shows at the Aragon. I saw them a few years ago, and they played their whole set in alphabetical order.

not that pricey
so far the oakland show is $50-65 and the nyc show is $62-75, so i’d imagine the aragon show would fall into that price range. worth every penny in my book. doolittle is one of my all-time favorite albums.
by Ryno on Aug 12, 2009 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah that's worth it
doolittle is definitely in my top 10 and in my car cd changer right now.

good
They played a good set, although it seemed a little short due to the forced cutoff at 10 PM. The setlist had pretty much everything I wanted to hear, with the the exception of “The Plan.” One of my favorite BTS songs.
Yo La Tengo was good, but their sound mix wasn’t great, so it was a little hard to hear.

I saw Deerhunter at Logan Square.
’Twas very good. Best part was easiliy Dan Deacon (I think?) doing his electronic shit with a ten-to-fifteen piece horn-and-drum marching band.

just got an old old old cd: Organized Konfusion’s ‘Stress: The Extinction Agenda’ as a gift. kickass.
also picked up Los Amigos Invisibles’ new CD ‘Commercial’ at their HoB Anaheim show recently that fucking rocked.

Listening to Mountain Goats "Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod"
I sure as hell hope their other songs are better than this. In the last 5 years, I’ve heard about 50 songs exactly like this one by various bands.
On a related note, and old crotchety fucker with whom I used to work, an indie rock fan btw, was describing indie rock on the whole as a bunch of crap, just that some bands you have some kind of connection with and those are the ones you end up liking. It’s not that the difference between the ones you like and dislike are that great, it’s that you chopped up a hooker listening to one band, giving you a positive to connection to the music, whereas you have nothing to associate with some other crappy band and therefore just toss them into the “recycled” bin.
I can see his point.

Obligatory Sox Tie-In Trivia
Q: What indie-rock icons recorded their debut major-label album two blocks away from US Cellular Field?
A: Modest Mouse, The Moon And Antarctica. At what used to be called Clava Studios on 33rd and Wells. No, really.
by IceColdFalstaff on Aug 14, 2009 2:04 PM CDT reply actions 1 recs
The Moon and Antarctica has got to be my favorite Modest Mouse album
On a related note, has anyone else picked up their new EP No One’s First, And You’re Next?
I think the album is pretty good and has some good songs in Whale Song and Perpetual Motion Machine, but overall just a bit above average.
