It's a good thing I started drinking. Otherwise I'd have trouble sleeping.
At least I contributed as much to the 14 inning scoreless loss as the White Sox entire bench, which just so happened to include 3 starters.

Wrigley Field fan who soaked Victorino gets away
By Paul Sullivan
The unknown fan who tossed a beer onto Philadelphia outfielder Shane Victorino during the fifth inning of Wednesday night’s game managed to escape without getting caught.
The Cubs still hope to identify the fan and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law, but will need the help of other Cubs fans to find him.
The incident happened when Victorino caught a sacrifice fly off Jake Fox’s bat in the fifth inning. A fan in the left-center field bleachers tossed his beer sideways onto the field, soaking Victorino. Another fan began taunting Victorino and was thought to be the beer-tosser. Security guards arrived at the scene and took the taunting fan down to the holding room underneath the bleachers.
But by the time they looked at the WGN-TV video and realized the taunting fan was not the beer tosser, the fan who actually threw the beer managed to get up and slip out of the ballpark.
The Cubs are working with the Chicago Police Department to try and find the fan, and plan to release the photograph on Thursday in hopes that someone will identify him. General manager Jim Hendry and manager Lou Piniella apologized to the Phillies and Victorino for the incident.

frustrating
This division is a joke, at least the Sox are only 2 games out.
JD, PK and JT better step it up. If they don’t make the playoffs I predict that 2 out of 3 of those vets will be gone next year. I don’t think they can afford them without some playoff cash.
"It was like everything was slow motion," Wise said. "I stuck my hand out so slowly and was able to make the catch."
3 games out. At this point of the season I use losses (which can't be made up).
And Kenny has said “I move people if we don’t win” (paraphrase, but very close). So you’re right about winning correlating to returning.
"Baseball is like church. Many attend, few understand."

It was pretty obvious who he was talking about
There’s too much talent on this roster right now for this team to be slogging around at the .500 mark. Earlier in the year, yes, but not now.
"It was like everything was slow motion," Wise said. "I stuck my hand out so slowly and was able to make the catch."
beckham is the only addition who has had sufficient time to make an impact

"It was like everything was slow motion," Wise said. "I stuck my hand out so slowly and was able to make the catch."
the addition or re-addition of those players isn't going to make a dramatic and immediate change. particularly since pods was essentially replacing quentin for most of that time.
if they were a .500 or so team earlier in the year, maybe they’re a .535 team circa two days ago. rios and peavy will add a win or two going forward.

The value that Pods provided in the beginning is very rapidly being undone by his ongoing costly stupidity. Which is not really unexpected, but very painful to watch.
There are plenty of people to blame when a team can’t score over 14 innings; our offense was disgusting the entire series.
But how many games in the past month, have we been able to point to something stupid Pods did, as either a turning point or a defining moment in the loss?
When you are desperate for a run in the 10th inning of a 0-0 ballgame, you do NOT get picked off 3rd. You just don’t. LOOK. ALIVE.
I was never on a bandwagon for Pods, I don’t even think one existed; most of us have just been waiting for the rickety wheels to fall completely off.
I appreciate what he’s done this season and in 2005, but the thrill is gone, baby.

He’s been one of the most consistently valuable member of our team, and (this year) one of our most consistent performers. When someone effs up, he should be called out for it. That was a mental error and those are inexcusable.

You hit the nail on the head
mental errors versus physical errors . . . I do not get that upset at physical errors (Alexei’s easy botched play) or players going 0 fer 6 . . . but mental errors are not really excusable . . . much less in an extra inning tied game late in the season during a pennant race. Those get called out in my opinion . . . maybe some go overboard, but that was a really poor play, its not even like it was close either . . . just asleep at the wheel.
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
Mental errors are bad, which means unleash the hounds right?
Then when are you going to call out that fat douchebag of a 3B coach?
"It was like everything was slow motion," Wise said. "I stuck my hand out so slowly and was able to make the catch."
by ChicagoPete on Aug 13, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions
How many times does he have to be called out on this site?
And I’ve railed against his hiring from jump street. Who is this comment aimed at? Do your homework. Cox should NOT be a 3B coach. He is Ozzie’s guy, for whatever reason. It is not helping the team.
And Christ yes mental errors ought to unleash the hounds. Each game, each situation, ratchets up im importance the later in the season it gets.
Can’t believe you are arguing this. You are normally cogent and accurate in your facts. Are you banging Mrs. Pods and feeling guilty, or what?

I try to be cogent, and what annoys me
is all I read after a game in which the Sox had 16 baserunners in 14 innings is endless “Kill Pods” nonsense. Plenty of blame to go around on this one, at least he got to 3B and put us in a position to score ONE RUN.
Besides, I strongly suspect it was that fool Cocks who told him to take a big ass lead.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
its never ok to get picked off at third
especially in a pitchers duel like that. no way is that on Cox either. Sending Nix, yeah, thats on Cox. But Pods is wholly to blame for getting picked off.
Hes been caught stealing 9 times. He only has 18 steals. This is not an elite runner on the basepaths. He hasnt been good there since pre-all-star break 2005. And thats on yahoo where for some reason they dont count getting picked off as a cs. So throw in 4 more. 18 sb, caught dicking around on the basepaths 13 times. Terrible.
His defense is bad. He cant read the ball off the bat and therefore doesnt take good routes to get there. Fly balls routinely fall a few steps in front of him while he is frozen trying to figure out what to do as the ball comes off the bat.
He was good in June, only 2 more strikeouts than walks and +7 sb-cs. And yahoo doesnt count being picked off as a CS which would add 4 more. Only BJ Upton is worse with 5. Since June, hes walked 11 times while striking out 25. Again, not good.
There were other factors in that game for sure, having beckham go up there to bunt, using Linebrink in a tied game, sending Nix vs a shallow Ichiro, but win probability was never higher than when that jack ass was standing on third with the meat of the order up and only one out.
Johnsons snap throw to nail Pods swung the win probability +26.2% for the M’s.
FSP
Castro ran into the dugout and told pitcher Jose Contreras, "He hasn't missed a spot all day. I think hes going to do it." Contreras replied, "Shut the fuck up."
So feel free to complain.
It was a pitcher’s duel. it happens. Each mistake re :a scoring opportunity wasted is magnified.

Nobody does. NOBODY. Not Nix, not Carlos Gomez, NOBODY.
The throw was perfect and that is what you just expect since it is Ichiro and NEWSFLASH, FFS, COX!!!, Ichiro is good!
The game before, he was deeper in right and threw a strike to the SS to make sure there was nobody running to 3rd.
Same guy, the next night, and we think it’s ok to run on him on an extremely shallow ball.
Ichiro wouldn’t have run on Ichiro there.

probably true there . . . though tie goes to the runner!
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
That play was just retarded
What the hell were they thinking. Someone should know that you dont take home when Ichiro catches the ball that close to the infield. He didn’t even get as much on that throw as he is capable of – his arm can make that throw without a bounce 50% of the time.
It reminds me of one of those plays from last year where Cox sent Thome and the ball got to homeplate before he was within 10 feet of the plate.
Why doesn’t anyone lay the catcher out before the playoffs or extra? That throw was close enought that he could have initiated collision right when the ball got in.
the catcher wasn't blocking the plate, was he?

One catch (and 1 hit) does not make you a major league player... or does it?

But, last night even with Ichiro on a short fly in that situation – you gotta send him.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
I think it was the right move.
Regardless of how close you deem it. Took a world class throw to beat him, tip your cap. I’d send him again in that situation, especially considering our recent inability to hit w/RISP or at all.
ichiro always makes world class throws.
that was a terrible send.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
to elaborate.
i’m all for testing outfielders. i frankly think teams, including the white sox, don’t do enough of it because most guys do not have accurate and strong arms. however, ichiro is an exception. a plus, plus outfielder with who does have an accurate and strong arm? when hawk said “that will get the job done” my reaction, which i said out loud, was “you’re a fucking idiot. that’s ichiro in right.” and then nix goes. and i slap my head. and then he’s thrown out. as just about everyone in the world except apparently jeff cox knew would happen.

Allow me to beat this dead horse. I disagree that you send no matter what in this situation. Why just throw out all reason (ie; considering who is fielding and throwing that ball to home, and from where)?
When you’re struggling like that, and you take a chance on a well-established arm and player in shallow outfield, can’t the argument be made that you are giving up much-needed outs?
When life gives you lemons, just say "Fuck the lemons," and bail.
by homesickalien on Aug 13, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions
An argument can be made either way
I totally understand what you are saying and Ichiro has a cannon. How many runs did we score this series, hell the last 6 games? Not many.
Was it a long shot to score – hell yeah. We could have hoped for a bad hop on the throw (I know, he didn’t bounce it) or a bobble by the backup catcher, etc. A lot of things can go wrong from the M’s point of view on that would allow Nix to score. With the way we have been playing, I take the chance.
What happens if he doesn’t send him and Thome comes up and grounds out to second?

does not compute. unless you’re including things that have only the remotest possibility of occurring, such as ChicagoPete jumping from the stands, knocking ichiro to the ground and butt-fucking him. even then, i say it’s 60/40 ichiro still gets nix.

The fucking hard hit ball from Beckham that king kicked that went right to the 2B for the dp, and then pods just completely losing his mind getting picked off 3rd with 1 out in a tie ballgame — inexcusable.
Put his ass on the bench. With rios here there is no reason for him to be a starter.
What I want to know
is what is the statistical analysis of base runners left in scoring position. It seems to me that the 2009 White Sox leave a shit load of runners on base in scoring position. Is there a comparison of teams that make the playoffs versus those that don’t with the seasonal average number of runners left on base in scoring position. All you statistic Geeks can you answer that for us?

you have to take into account that
the guys with the highest OBP on the team are the ones who are usually in scoring position. And they aren’t the swiftest people on the planet.

KenWo = Kreskin.
Speaking of KenWo, I saw this article in the NYT this past Sunday and thought of KenWo. Dr. Andrews recommends Little Leaguers pitch a little less:
Initially, Fleisig’s research focused on repair and recovery. Then in the mid-1990s, as the number of young arm-injury patients began climbing, he saw Andrews grow increasingly, even visibly, agitated. "It’s the best pitchers who are being abused," Andrews complained to him. "They’re the ones pitching all the innings."He told Fleisig, "It’s time to do something about preventing injuries."

Make'em make a good play
No problem with making Ichiro make an accurate throw and making the catcher put the tag on. Winning baseball is about challenging the other team to make a good play to get you. If they make all the good plays they win if they don’t you do.
Anyone prefer station-to-station baseball?
Pods picked off 3rd – obviously wanted to be ready to score on anything hit, but there’s no excuse for getting picked off 3rd (unless some kind of squeeze play gone bad).
Pena – that man needs to be at the very back of the bullpen only coming in when we’re up by 6 or down by 5.
by Dick Allen's batting helmet on Aug 13, 2009 1:45 PM CDT reply actions
Winning baseball would also be about understanding
situations . . . for example, understanding the situation where you have the best arm in baseball in RF and sending anyone on a short flyball with your #4 hitter (and one that has a 1.126 OPS with RISP) is not a good idea. And when it fails, it is not surprising, a good decision or winning baseball.

I shoved them into my mouth in the 10th, and stuff happened
then I puked them all over myself and Pods got picked off
¡signature!
What was Pods thinking about? ---I'm thinking he was dreaming about HSA's "Q! Poster"
“You don’t expect that to happen at the big league level,” said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. “You expect everyone to know what they’re doing. I guess he was thinking about something else.”

Pods was thinking about his upcoming reduced playing time

He's a new Dad.
You can relate. Te was late for the evening feeding. Kid’s all screwed up.

How many nannies you suppose that kid has?
You and I can relate to the “no sleep” factor. For me, it was 3 months.
I’ll bet Pods is sleeping as well as that new kid…with his sleep being interrupted by nightmares of getting picked off 3rd.

Saw the quotes.
Didn’t recognize the quote.

Its from a halloween episode where Homer is transported out of the show and into the real world.
At first he’s terrified, but then he comes across an Erotic Cakes bakery and his fears are forgotten. I always wondered why that one quote stuck with me. Clearly it was to prepare me for a fucked-cake later down the road.
THANK YOU NATE SILVER, TECHNOLOGY IS THE TOPS
