Pro Quality. Fan Perspective.
Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

This is part of a series of articles examining what every team's roster would look like if given only the players it originally signed. I'm compiling the rosters, ranking them and presenting them in a countdown from Nos. 30 to 1. The White Sox rank 25th.

The White Sox have had a better decade than any other team that will finish in the bottom 10 of these rankings. GM Kenny Williams deserves much of the credit thanks to a number of quality trades. However, he also should be blamed for some of the lousy drafts. His choices of reliever Royce Ring with the 18th overall pick in 2002 and upside-less right-hander Lance Broadway 15th overall in 2005 qualify as two of the worst selections of the decade. Then again, he's had a top-14 pick only once since taking over after 2000 and he scored a big hit then by landing Beckham last year.

Sounds like an ambitious project

cant help but wonder what we see first, all 30 rankings or the next WBC.

this is pretty stupid in my opinion.

who cares? trades and free agents are a big part of the game.

I like it. Kind of an "in a parallel universe where you only keep your guys" hypothetical. Or just another method of evaluating drafts.

I linked because I thought it highlighted how well KW has done

He was admittedly too hands off in the draft for a while, but since taking more ownership in that area the Sox have had some of the better drafts in baseball

he may have been hands off, but he's the gm and he (and JR) followed the philosophy

of drafting overvalued picks that would make easy contractual agreements. he should receive a bulk of the blame for that. it’s all relative of course, when there was only one (top 14) highest pick opportunity and it was gordo. anyway, the drafting philosophy appears to have changed for the better. and i also agree that he’s done remarkably well in other areas.

It's nice to see how crappy some of drafts have been

and this is a good way to put that into context. That being said, yes i disagree with the premise of judging a team solely based on drafts. Some of those players are the reason why we’ve had above .500 teams, playing for the sox or helping us in a trade.

Too ambitious, though the outfield of Rowand, Lee, and Mags was pretty great with Ray Ray leading off.

I love the smell of baseball in the morning.

The day has finally arrived for live 2009 White Sox baseball in Nor Cal. It’s been nearly two years since my triumphant entrance on the West Coast, but I’m still uncomfortable with catching only one or two series a year out here rather than the 50-60 games a season in Chicago to which I’d grown accustomed. Not to mention the Sox 11-31 record in Oakland in the aughts. And how all of the extra foul ground at the ballpark makes even the best seats seem pretty ordinary. And that beer vendors don’t roam the aisles in California (this is especially bothersome when Contreras pitches and the beer consumption rate jumps to somewhere around one per hitter). And that the ballpark will be empty.

But what the hell, this is my first live baseball since last August (no way am I going to a Giants or A’s game when they’re not playing the Sox), A’s games aren’t even close to as scary as Raiders games when you’re repping the visitors, and tomorrow I can abandon the bulletproof vest that’s usually required regardless and just use rhythm as a shield.

Don't call it a comeback.

This is much better than most hack jobs.

My biggest complaint is the common one, not really being familar with a team’s farm system and making generally dated statements. (Like no mention of Hudson-duh or the Sox farm is depleted because somebody said that last year…..). Seems they all make these kind of mistakes for all teams except the ones they follow closely.

He’s also a little more aggressive in his numbers (also common – they always seem to take worst case scenario), but at least I don’t see stupid shit like pencil JD in for 12 million on their payroll next year….

The Sox are set up to compete for the next 2-3 years and

have a decent foundation moving forward.

Now I do understand that the Central blows and allowed for it.

But I feel totally vindicated in thinking there was nothing wrong with trying to compete and rebuilding at the same time.

"Oh well back to work"

by Tdogg on Aug 14, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And beyond 2-3 years, how much can one really project?

Kind of seems like an exercise in futility to say, “2010 and 2011 are looking okay, but look out, White Sox fans — you’re in for some trouble come 2014*.”

*Not that I accept that premise in the first place — I seem to remember after the 2006 season folks saying how the Sox were an old team whose prospects for 2008 and beyond were miserable (a particular series of exchanges with an optimistic Indians fan comes to mind). And we’ve seen how that has played out.

it's not bad. just somewhat sloppy.

and, of course, there are a few rather ridiculous assumptions and mistakes aired. first, john danks isn’t getting $6.3M in arbitration. if he gets half that, that would be a win for him. compare to justin verlander and his $3.3M (iirc), probably a comparable to superior pitcher in terms of what gets you money in arbitration. second, pretending like there is any chance that thornton will be let go is silly. third, wilson betemit is not under contract next year and is probably just going to be non-tendered.

wait, you mean all those articles about how gavin floyd couldn't possibly replicate his 2008 season because stats said so were incorrect?

i’m shocked.

We’ve been hard on Gavin Floyd in the past, because his talent level has not matched his numbers often. He either performs way over his head or gets shellacked into next week. This year though, he’s turned himself into a legitimately good pitcher, and is someone you shouldn’t forget about down the stretch or for next year. Floyd posted a 3.84 ERA in 2008, but it should have been around a run higher than that. BABIP regression powerbombed his ERA into a turnbuckle during the first two months of 2009, as Floyd posted an ERA of 6.12 despite keeping his homer rate at a reasonable level thanks to 69 hits in 60 1/3 innings along with his four walks per nine. Things have changed since that point though, with Floyd keeping the strikeout rate from that time but subtracting some walks (2.7 per nine) and sustaining that impressive (for Floyd and a White Sox pitcher) homer rate. After 2.2 and 1.3 the past two years, Floyd is at 0.8 homers per nine for 2009. He hasn’t done this by lowering his HR/FB, but has instead given up fewer fly balls and kept the ball on the ground more often. That’s what you need to do to succeed in the homer-friendly Cell, so chances are good that Floyd, while not a guy we should be looking for sub-three ERAs from, can actually pitch like the guy people thought he was with last year’s numbers.

It seems to me that GF

is in a great groove now, I like watching him pitch. I know it’s something that you can’t quantify, but with him, the way he has turned things round since early doors in the season seems like he has become mentally tougher. That kind of thing comes with getting a bit older, and people, men especially, mature at very different rates.

I know his conditioning isn’t up to par, and I hope that doesn’t have an effect on his personality. Last thing we need is a big fat mean guy down in A-ball

just a reminder that phil rogers gets paid money,

probably quite a lot of it, to write things like this.

FORT MILL, S.C. — Jake Peavy’s unofficial White Sox debut in one word? Wow. So that’s why Ken Williams didn’t mind giving up four pitching prospects for a guy on the disabled list.

yeah phil. kw got peavy so he could pitch 3 scoreless innings in charlotte.
i mean jeez, what, rogers had no idea that peavy might be a halfway decent pitcher? and it may still be a little early to try to evaluate that trade.

it is what it is......

i'd be more confident if Phil didn't like it.

Bacon still has a long way to go

Nix has just been covering it up with his shit sandwich.

The Pods on the team next year joke isnt funny anymore, please cut it out everyone.

Castro ran into the dugout and told pitcher Jose Contreras, "He hasn't missed a spot all day. I think hes going to do it." Contreras replied, "Shut the fuck up."

fine - we bring back Thome...

without Thomer – we are very right handed next year.

I think Thome may accept a little less to stay with the Sox to try to get #600.

OT - Mad Men Season 3 premiere Sunday!

As previously established, I don’t have a tv, so I’ll probably have to wait for the DVDs (again), but this is a friendly reminder to the rest of you.

LOVE IT!

(also, if anyone knows of a site that has the episodes a la hulu, please let me know!)

West coast games not for me

much as I want to, I need half a pound of speed to make tonight’s match up

by hoodlight on Aug 14, 2009 5:45 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

With Contreras pitching in Oakland, you shouldn't want to much.

I’ll pick up the slack for you in any event.

Don't call it a comeback.

by Toonderstrook on Aug 14, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

hey!

have a good night mate, to be honest he looked awesome for three innings the last time he pitched, then it all went wrong. I’m hoping he can replicate that for at least 6 innings tonight

by hoodlight on Aug 14, 2009 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with you.

And I wouldn’t have nearly a problem with a poor performance if he’d do it more quickly. There’s nothing more painful than a bad performance with Contreras-like gaps between pitches.

Don't call it a comeback.

how much is a beer in the park?

compared to like a bar or something

by hoodlight on Aug 14, 2009 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

2-3 times as much

at a footy game here it's more or less the same

but the quality is 2-3 times worse, so I guess it’s the same shit different colour.

by hoodlight on Aug 14, 2009 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Too much.

If I remember right from last year, a 24 oz. Pacifico, which is the way to go so you don’t miss half the damn game running up to the concourse, was $14.

Don't call it a comeback.

by Toonderstrook on Aug 14, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well 24oz is just short of two pints

at 14$ that’s like 8 quid, 4 quid a pint, not many places would get any customers charging that over here.

but hey ho – inelastic demand and all that

by hoodlight on Aug 14, 2009 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Half a pint short.

A scam regardless.

Don't call it a comeback.

by Toonderstrook on Aug 14, 2009 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

similar down south

the big ass pacificos or coronas are $12 at angel stadium, plus whatever you tip the vendor. so twice what you’d find at a bar, 4x the store cost

These events have me frightened and on the verge of evacuating my bowels.

by thatshortkid on Aug 14, 2009 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

do you always have to tip when you have a beer?

it’s not expected at all here, you might say to the barmaid ’ get one for yourself ’ if she’s got a nice smile, but %95 of the time no one bothers

by hoodlight on Aug 14, 2009 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it's pretty customary

I do at bars and at ballgames.

If you don’t at the bar, good luck getting another the rest of the night. At the ballpark, the vendors on the move might not find you as easily either. The concourse vendors out here are often surprised when they get tipped, which says more about A’s fans than anything.

Don't call it a comeback.

by Toonderstrook on Aug 14, 2009 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I actually always wondered about that at the Cell

I always end up tipping because I’d rather be a generous drunken idiot than a drunken a-hole. But are you supposed to?

I agree. But I was wondering if others consider it standard.

the bulpen bar is where its at

you can get a double in a 22 oz. glass of beam and coke that will put you on your ass.

also, I always tip.

Castro ran into the dugout and told pitcher Jose Contreras, "He hasn't missed a spot all day. I think hes going to do it." Contreras replied, "Shut the fuck up."

no tip the guy that brings it to your seat?

I thought he was asking about the walk up vendors in the concourses. I always tip the guy that brings it to me. Usually the walk ups if the change works out right, but I don’t feel bad if I don’t.

At least that place is nice.

They should give away dosed beer here to help everyone forget what an ugly ballpark they’re sitting in.
