Sox v. A's, Pt. 3: At least the jagged end of an unused broken broomstick is good for something
I actually took contemporaneous notes during interesting points of the game today in order to refresh my recollection when the beer haze wore off. I planned to share those thoughts and others regarding Bob Geren's pitching staff management from the point of view of A's fans, the woman behind me who was full of nuggets like "I almost wore sandals today but I didn't think about it," questionable calls from the umpiring crew, and today's old-timey 1929 motif. After much contemplation, I've decided I really don't have much to say other than
"FUCK YOU AND THE TIMELY-HITTING HORSE YOU RODE IN ON, MARK ELLIS!!!"

Time running out to create excitment to fill seats
Schools soon to be kicking in and games like today (and this last road trip) will start to keep fans away. Team has 2 sold out games starting this week, if they want to have fans support them, play like it then!!!
One catch (and 1 hit) does not make you a major league player... or does it?
Thank you for your piercing

Somehow...
This game didn’t bother me as much as some of the previous ones. I guess I am happy with 2 of 3 in Oakland. Still, it’s a crappy way to lose.

Well at least there is this
Scott Podsednik, who played center field until Rios’ arrival, started in left Sunday and Guillen suggested he would try to keep Rios in center as much as possible.
To which I respond: “duh”
fucking dome
Keep in mind Kenny's belief in CF being the easiest of the 3. I would not be surprised if they moved Rios to one of the corners.
Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd, smiling.

Lower-level tickets remain available for Tuesday night’s game, in which Freddy Garcia makes his return, but the upper level is sold out.

Could Pods have caught that ball hit to the wall in the 8th?
i was sitting along the first base line and didnt get a good look nor did I see the replay. It looked from afar that it may have been catchable if not for pods’ defense
I didn't have any better any angle from behind the plate, but my initial reaction was no.
After just watching the replay, it looks like Pods didn’t get all the way to the wall and may have had a shot if he’d done so. Either way, BA would’ve had it.
Don't call it a comeback.
by Toonderstrook on Aug 17, 2009 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions
I can't imagine Quentin'd have caught it.
Didn’t see a great angle on the initial tag at second even on replay, but it looked like Nix picked up his glove before Davis’ hand came off the bag.
Don't call it a comeback.
by Toonderstrook on Aug 17, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions
Wise would have had it
the radio announcers for the A’s said that Pods mis-timed his jump (gee, there’s something new) and that was the reason the ball hit off the wall.
They also said that had Nix kept his glove on Davis at second as Davis overslid the bag, Davis would have been called out.

it most certainly is
In game 2 of a series at Oakland at the start of the 2007 season, Pods misjudged a fly ball at the LF wall and it bounced off his head, allowing what I recall as the winning run to score. Either he or Ozzie should learn from their mistakes (I write this halfway in jest).
Wise has shown his ability to time jumps at the wall. Ozzie believes in Jesus’s power and has been rewarded with the powers of a clairvoyant. He knew that there would be a play at the wall, but decided to allow Pods the chance to redeem himself for that play in 2007 and Wednesday’s blunder at 3B. What can we say, it didn’t work out. Jesus still loves us.
There’s probably some sort of metric that would offer insight into when the best fielders are most critical to a game’s outcome when you’re up by minimal runs and it’s late in the game…

nix certainly wouldn't have gotten him sliding off the bag.
the issue was whether nix got him before he reached second. it was close and there wasn’t a real good view of it on any of the replays. i’d say nix didn’t get him but hawk will disagree with me.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I don't think Nix got him before he hit the bag either
But I do think if the ump had not started to signal out before changing the call to safe, Nix would have not pulled as far away from the runner and would have had a chance to tag him when he slid past the base.
by Grinder in Training on Aug 17, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions
don't pay attention to what the ump is doing. pay attention to what the runner is doing.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I don't disagree
I’m just saying what happened. He was watching the ump and showing him the ball. Had the ump made a call right away he could have reacted better to what the base runner was doing. Instead the umpire started to call him out then called him safe, giving the base runner an extra second to get back to the base. I’m not saying what Nix did was correct.
by Grinder in Training on Aug 17, 2009 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions
the umpire did not give the base runner an extra second to get back on the base. he is not the one with the ball. nix has the ball.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I'm not arguing that
I don’t know what you’re trying to prove, I agreed with you, Nix shouldn’t be watching the ump.

I actually think Q does make the catch
It’s glove hand side and he has the common sense to move to the wall. Im fed up with Pods in the field.
"Oh well back to work"
The 3-3 road trip keeps them on my predicted pace/ Detroit did also
Im just pissed they should have gained a game.
"Oh well back to work"
I'm fed up with both of them.
Other than the non-wall seeking fly balls, it seemed as though neither Pods nor Q could come up with anything cleanly all weekend. Every time there was a base hit in that direction, I’d anticipate a runner taking an extra base.

I too could not believe how brutal they were in the field
I don’t get to watch many games, so maybe this series was par for the course, but they are both hacking it up out there. It’s so bad that the mentioned it in the pregame show for the A’s radio broadcast. As good of announcers as the A’s have, they don’t usually get that far into the nuances of the other team.
Also, there was also an interview with Tabasco (he went to high school in Hayward – just South of Oakland) that I missed because I went to the grocery store. Nuts.

The A's groundkeepers should be embarrassed by the field conditions,
including not covering the yard markers from the NFL game. What, budgets are so tight they can’t spring for a couple of cans of green spray paint? The Sodfather should have shown up and bitch slapped all those guys.
However, the A’s played on the same lousy field, so the Sox have no excuses. They should have gained a game and blew it. It’s coming down to crunch time, so I hope they man up for the strtech run.

home road splits are so constant in all sports
some guy did a study of Scottish Div 3 football games (because people always say it’s down to crowds and stuff like that) and these games you would be lucky to have 200 people and a couple of cows watching the game home or away. And always teams would have better home records – must be the familarity with the playing environment that is the key factor I guess.
I once read a cool article years ago
on this pro gambler. His angle was picking the worst series odds wise and betting the dog every game. He tracked the whole season for the purpose of the piece. It was an extreme + play and he made most of his cash on the last game when the dog team had lost the first two. Sweeps just aren’t that common, no matter how bad the competition. In more recent years Vegas and off shore books have tried to account for this. Call it mind games, whatever….

Two completed (Royals and Indians). The other eight: lose 20-1 to the Twins, 4-3 to the Pirates (Jenks gives up three straight hits, including game-tying homer to Joltin’ Jack Wilson), 3-1 to the Angels (Jared Weaver…enough said), 10-8 to the Indians (Richard lasts an inning +), 10-2 to the Orioles, 8-5 to the Yankees (bad Buehrle), 9-5 to the Angels (bad Danks), and 3-2 yesterday.

Yep - with my son - tonight, Wed, Sat
One catch (and 1 hit) does not make you a major league player... or does it?
I took in Mets/Giants at Citi with some Giants fans friends
Great game to watch, lots of drama. Had seats in row 4 of the Pepsi Porch area, got them off stubhub for 45 each after fees and taxes, which was actually face value when all was said and done.
Not great seats but about as good as you can get in the outfield. The porch overhangs the field by about 8 feet so in the later innings I moved down to row 1 and got in some great heckling of Francuer who was basically right below me 50 feet or so.
Citi field does display OBP on the scoreboard, which is awesome because Franceur has a rather famous quote about “if OBP is so important why isn’t it on the scoreboard”.
After now having gotten to both NYS and Citi field I can say I liked Citi quite a bit more. NYS is of course just a palace, but Citi field is quirkier and more inviting.
I’d recommend if anyone is in the NYC area and wants to take in a game at either stadium to go with CIti. Just more bang for your buck.
The Coliseum actually flashed OBP too, as well as SLG.
But then they threw up SB and BB for everyone as well. An interesting decision.
Don't call it a comeback.

What poor timing! Don't discourage peeps from joining in the fun next weekend!

Ex-Orioles are the kiss of death
Ryan Freel – single handedly killed the Cubs
George Sherrill – Dodgers are 6-9 since acquiring his services
Greg Zaun – Rays are 3-6 since acquiring his services
Only a matter of time before the “O” factor kills the Tigers. Thanks Dombrowski!!!!!!! FNS!

a little redundant reitteration please
im sure that its in here somewhere, but it looks like the weekend warriors had plenty to say while the games were going on so i didn’t really want to sort through it.
but what if any was the word about those botched rios plays…almost screwin up with jd, then totally dropin the one on q. with it being a wgn broadcast its one of the few i get to see, but im assuming that having had pods in center, that dye is used to working a wide right and q is the same on the left since having been back. that and that the 3 just have to get used to working with eachother too. but seriuosly, after the first one with dye you would think that rios would not have been so eager out there.

The one with Q! was not AR's fault
Q! just ran in front of him…you could see on the replay that AR was calling him off.

The almost-collision with JD just looked like an easy jog for Rios to where JD was hustling to in RF
Wasn’t very close to him anyway
i don't think q or pods are used to having a real CF
