Day at a time.

Sox are showing they are a team to bet on. Will send the WSJ link tomorrow for proof. If you bet $100 on them every game this year and got paid the odds they are one of 11 teams that have made money with that strategy.

yeah. it's a fine outing against a shit team.

contreras > garcia. that isn’t saying much.

and let’s not use the “well, they hit against two other guys” argument. how about i cite contreras’ outings for the entire year (you know, a sample a bit larger)? he’s barely hanging on to a backend spot at this point. which is fine. if people want to fellate him for having occasional good results against a team susceptible to having a good outing from a poor pitcher against them, have at it. the sox should be sure to set up their rotation so he sees them when they’re in town next month.

But considering the opposition we should temper our enthusiam. I suspect any one of Torres, Whisler, or Egbert would’ve done about as well today.
I can hardly take this start as any reason for optimism going forward.

I’m surely not a Count fan boy, but hearing that aside from the solo DeJesus shot no Royal got past first base with him on the bump made me think it had to be a pretty good start. Or at least surely better than we could suspect Torres, Whisler, or Egbert to match.

We’re all aware of the situation and subsequently have very low expectations for Count.

So even against a shitty lineup, it’s nice to see him get the job done and last more than 3 innings; is it not?

I had virtually no hope or expectations going into the game….and I knew then that we were facing the hacktastic Royals.

There's a case to be made

Not saying it’s a particularly strong case, but unless it gets resolved and they wind up pretty close to 50-50 after another 3-4 years it’s still going to be whined about. Fed’s probably better than Laver though so /shrug

Tennis is going to be boring as hell in 6 or 7 years.

by Q!'s Qrew on Aug 19, 2009 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

This is going to be pretty long

Apologies. The Australian Open this year was kickass as well until the fifth (don’t really know what happened), Fed/Nadal always delivers if it’s not on Clay, it is the most watchable thing I’ve ever seen. When I started watching tennis around 2002 or so (also started playing it) I’d always envisioned this match where it goes 7-6 every set alternating and finishes with the guy I like better winning, and then it happened with the best two guys around but the guy I liked better lost. Federer is certainly better against the field (had some incredible 210-8 record in one year"against everyone else" graphic around 2005 I think when the rivalry was still budding), but obviously Nadal was young and is improving, only question is if he gets injured or not, if he doesn’t then the best tennis years I can possibly imagine are going to continue for a spell, unfortunately he’s not as durable since he goes for defense instead of winners against good players. Defense that is vastly superior to everyone else’s offense except for Federer. I absolutely loathe the anti-hype machine as it relates to Federer, and I really think it does sort of motivate him to retire earlier than he should (though maybe not since the machine has turned back in his favor), but the “Borg quit early” thing is probably bouncing around his head as well, why not go for 20 majors after all. Hype and and Anti-Hype seem to affect the White Sox too :(

i don’t view it subjectively, i view it objectively. others apparently do not. when i see him, i’ll be sure to congratulate freddy on having a “really good” outing against danville.

and if you have “virtually no hope or expectations going into the game”, yeah, i’d expect you’d be all over this. as i pointed out earlier this week in another context, this is major league baseball. saying things like “we’re totally going to lose because greinke is pitching” or “i’m going to be really pissed if the white sox don’t sweep the royals” is silly.

First of all, I did not say either of those things, before they are wrongly associated with me. I expect nothing in baseball other than the unexpected.

Secondly, I wrongly opined that it was a good outing, prior to removing all context of this game and the pitcher in question, from my mind.

I just said he pitched well. I realize the suckiness of the opposition. But he still pitched well. He could have just as easily been shelled by the shitty Royals.

Where is the enthusiasm in that? And where am I slobbing his knob?

PUH-lease. After all my posts, you might be aware that I am one of the more optimistic and hope-filled people here. Always.

I misspoke by saying “hope” – bad word choice. Obviously I have hope for each and every game.
But that comment was entirely regarding Count’s performance….for which I chose not to have expectations, even considering it was against the Royals (which was the point).

Even as hopeful as I always am, I typically choose to anticipate the worst for games like this.
That way, I get to be pleasantly surprised.

I don’t care who Jose pitched against. He was on the last toe of his last leg, we all assumed the worst when he barfed up a homer in the fourthmeal inning, and then the motherfucker goes and shuts them down, which isn’t a given against any team with eyes if your control isn’t there. It was. Fuck yeah. Bitchezzz

Anyway that’s as cogent as I can get this eve. Jose is a motherfuckin world series hero, he has a place in my heart right next to the geico lizard and my box of M.U.S.C.L.E. toys, and it did me proud to see him, in this season of bizarre old pitcher merry-go-round, go out there and buckle some knees for at least one last time.

This discussion got me thinking about how we 'objectively' determine a pitcher's performance.

To me, considering the opposing lineup is subjective, even if it is based on some truth.

One of the beautiful things about baseball, as I said above, is that you never know what will happen.
Every team, good or bad, will play games that are uncharacteristic of their overall season.

When you consider this from a different angle – take a great lineup – for example, the Yankees – and say Buehrle gives up 8 or 10 runs to them.

We don’t sit back and say, “Well, Buehrle sure pitched great, but it’s the Yankees….”

However, in this particular case, we are quick to overlook a solid performance simply because “it’s the Royals;” almost as though we should have expected no less from Contreras.

Just a thought.

fuck you and the dick you rode in on. ~Trooper

by homesickalien on Aug 19, 2009 7:03 PM CDT reply actions

Aside from Pittsburgh I think a debate can be made

That any major league lineup is decidedly volatile and therefore it is an achievement to shut them down. Unless the opposing team is extremely good (say the Card’s 3 and 4 hitters) I think park factor is more important than the opponent, again excepting Pittsburgh’s entirely minor league offense. Also 3 hits 1 BB and 1ER, 8 K’s is good no matter what, doesn’t matter what park you’re pitching in nor what team you’re facing.

by Carbiner on Aug 19, 2009 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

i expected bad things

royals have a good number of lefties in their lineup, against which Count is ineffective unless he’s got his fork.

THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY

by colintj on Aug 19, 2009 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Which was my issue.

Contreras is not some young rookie. He may have a good outing or not but he’s capable of shutting down any team at a given time. Its not anyone is looking at this as lost gold or undiscovered gem.

He’s simple. When he limits walks, he’s usually effective. I felt like he was on that way in Oakland before that blowup inning, helped along with the keystone defenders.

"Oh well back to work"

by Tdogg on Aug 19, 2009 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Defense is also key

which is not surprising when you are talking about a back of the rotation guy. His margin for error is much smaller than it used to be so when the defense gives a team (Oakland) 4 or 5 outs in an inning, it is trouble.

Agreed

the mindset that this is MLB and expecting a sweep does not equate (just because the team is bad) to discounting a start because it is against said bad team. Royals are not good, but this is MLB and he just as easily could have been shelled again. He is essentially the idea of a back of the rotation guy, which is okay by me at this point.

i guess we should just throw out strength of opponent then in our analysis of pitchers.

of course you discount a performance because it’s against a bad offense. this is axiomatic. it doesn’t take much thought to realize that it’s tougher to hold the yankees to one run than it is to do the same to the royals.

Looking Smoltz-like since then. Decent the first time through the lineup, crap afterward. and look what happened to Smoltz. Every ML pitcher has good outings if they are allowed to pitch long enough. But it was a nice surprise.

how quickly things can change.

it sounds so daunting to say that the sox record needs to be whatever given detroit playing .500 ball. it’s so much more reasonable to just consider that if the sox win 2 in a row at any point while the tigers lose 2 in a row, and the teams play exactly even besides that- tie. game 163. that ain’t hard.

hell, the sox could win this division by a handful of games if they had 1 good week. detroit isn’t gonna go on a run. plus, 6 games left with the tigers. the sox haven’t squandered their chances yet.

as long as the sox’ fate is in their hands, it’s gonna be exciting.

Cashing checks and having sex.

by MarketMaker on Aug 19, 2009 9:55 PM CDT reply actions

Sox still need to get hot, Detroit not so much

My earlier point, about if Detroit plays .500 ball the Sox need to play .600 (24W/18L), is simply saying that Detroit doesn’t have to get hot, just keep playing .500, while the Sox have to have a decent winning streak, even something like winning 8 of 11 games somewhere along the line.

A few trends, some pretty obvious, over a 162 game season are:

- many bad teams play below .500 and then can be counted on to streak at least once during the year to reach, or reach towards, .500 they then cool off to fall back down.

good teams play .500 most of the time and then streak 2, or 3 times during a season to increase their above .500 record.

really good teams tend to play .500 most of the time but will have 4 or 5 upward streaks.

Winning streaks last anywhere from 10 games to 18 games (and occasionally a few more).

So the Sox need one more streak, hope that Detroit doesn’t have one more streak, and play .500 the rest of the time.

we’re not talking about most of the division leads of 5-7 games, the tigers have a 2 freaking game lead. all the sox need to do is match the tigers and win one extra game in the last week.

what are the pro's and cons of this?

Baseball’s current collective bargaining agreement expires in December 2011, and league officials have made clear their intention to negotiate a cap on draftee bonuses, similar to ones currently in use by the other major sports, in the next round of bargaining. Selig said MLB also would seek to subject international amateurs—who currently are recognized as free agents—to the draft. Both the cap and the “worldwide” draft have been discussed in previous CBA negotiations, but neither has survived to make it into the final agreement.

“There’s no question in my mind, in 2011, certainly a [hard] slotting system and a worldwide draft are things we will be very aggressive in talking about,” Selig said.

To me- I think it is a great idea although it may close the cuban pipeline! AHHH

Good for the Nats

Unless they set the 1st pick salary too high, but they could just make picks trade-able. Biggest con is work stoppage for Boras lord of all. Don’t think they’ll actually be able to get every baseball country to agree to a drafting system yet. Seems like development in the minors is much more important than the actual drafted players in the vast majority of cases. (Including the man, the myth, the legend)

by jc2313 on Aug 20, 2009 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Not that ridiculous

If it was implemented correctly, and all teams were given the same amount to spend, and there was a lot of thought put into it, it’d be similar to a fantasy baseball league auction. More fair than the draft today. Would probably have to give more money to the worst teams, less to the best to make it more of an aid for those real bad teams, but otherwise I prefer it. No holdouts, because the players get to pick their team. No wasted picks on guys they end up not being able to sign.

Would be great to see how each team’s strategy. Do teams just save up (if money is rolled over) for five years until a guy like Ichiro, Weiters or Strasburg becomes available or does your team spend it’s full amount each year going for quantity over quality.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

are they going to force the owners to spend every $? And equating it to a fantasy baseball auction only reinforces my point.

You dont see the problem

where you have teams that dont like spending money being given a bunch of money they won’t spend . . . while the teams that will spend money are not being given any money to spend? That would be an idiotic system.

by jc2313 on Aug 20, 2009 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

That already happens.

See: Pittsburgh Pirates. They take in more revenue sharing dollars than they spend. If that’s an idiotic system, it’s already in place, so this isn’t going to make it any worse.

The dollar issue already exists, the least you could do is make the draft better, b/c that spending problem is here.

And I already addressed that above, and suggested it needs to be addressed, and that it is a bigger concern for me than the draft issue.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

That doesnt make the draft

better and exactly how is there a spending problem. Here are your top 7 spending teams this year . . .

Nationals 11 10 $10,869,500
Mariners 12 12 $10,636,600
Tigers 10 9 $8,857,100
Padres 10 10 $8,735,500
Diamondbacks 15 15 $8,548,700
Pirates 11 11 $8,081,900
Rockies 12 12 $7,663,300

This is the most overblown ‘problem’ in all of baseball.

by jc2313 on Aug 20, 2009 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

The total number isn't the problem.

The problem is guys like Crow going to teams that won’t sign him, guys letting players slip in the draft b/c they won’t pay over slot when other teams will. Teams like the Tigers getting players at the end of the first round that shouldn’t be there. It’s a ridiculous system.

Not to mention American players not getting paid on the same scale as international players, how is that fair or acceptable? It’s a ridiculous system that half the players go to the highest bidder, the other half go in a draft. What kind of backwards ass system is that?

The problem isn’t the total dollars being spent, it’s who is spending the dollars, and who is getting them, and how those players are ending up on certain teams. It’s a god awful system.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Depends on which international players

you are talking about . . . some are professional internationally. It is a really slippery slope when dealing with the international question. I dont have much of an issue with including them in some way (the non professional), if it is realistically feasible.

What do you mean by ‘who is spending them’ . . . you mean like the Nationals and Padres and Pirates . . . those stalwarts? Who else do you want spending the money? The teams that spent the most money this year do not support what you are suggesting. Does it happen? Sure, but I think teams are fixing this themselves by becoming smarter . . . and realizing that these bonuses are not a stupid use of resources and allocating more appropriately.

It is not nearly as awful as you think. Perfect, no. Allowing teams to trade picks could help many of the issues you mention above.

The cons are that amateur bonuses would be surpressed

even more than they already are. So, I guess if you are an owner that is great. But, they are going to have to give up something major to the union to get that done . . . and I don’t know why they would do that to ‘fix’ something that isn’t really broken.

I think most of the players currently in the MLB union would want to keep amateur’s prices down in order to raise their own salary.

How would just agreeing to that lead to the players

raising their own salary and the owners not sticking that money in their pockets? Your premise is accurate though, sure the players union will gladly agree to screw over non union members if they have something to gain from it . . . but there will have to be something.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

by jc2313 on Aug 20, 2009 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

That'd be part of the agreement.

Obviously they aren’t going to just give up money. It’d be assumed that the owners agree to pay a minimum percentage of revenue to the players, while at the same time, paying less to amatuers. The guys already in the league would much rather the money go to established players over guys who may never make it to the league.

That’s why it’s a bargaining agreement. They bargain over how much money and who it goes to. It’s a given that the owners would give something up or gaurantee the money will not just be pocketed.

If I was a player though I’d have a bigger issue w/ those teams taking in more just from revenue sharing than they are paying out, like the Pirates.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

The money is already going to the established players

over guys who ‘never’ make it to the league . . . are you serious?

Regardless, my point was simply the players aren’t giving that up for nothing. If they were to agree to slotting in the draft, the owners are going to have to give them something in return and there are a myriad of ways for that to be done.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

of course they'll use it as a bargaining chip.

but the players have never shown much interest in how the amateur draft or international free agency works so i doubt it will be that controversial of an issue. throw a little money the players way and this gets done.

by larry on Aug 20, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure, dont know how that differs

from what I said . . . though I dont think it will be quite that ‘little’ or not controversial . . . because agents tend to have a say and some power in such things, but I think it could get done as well.

They get a , so as long as the total amount is the same or more, they could care less if it’s given to their rookie client or to their established superstar client.
10 of 5 million + 10% of 20 million is the same as 10% of 10 million + 10% of 15 million

I don't know why you insist it doesn't exist.

What proof do you have the majority of teams would just pocket this money?

No one is forcing teams to spend money now, how would this change that? There are already teams that pocket money, and teams that spend as much as possible. Why does this change that? What do I have to go by that would suggest if a team had a couple million freed up from their draft allocation they wouldn’t allocate it to something else?

Why would I not believe they would shift this percentage of their budget to their major league product? I have no evidence suggesting the majority of teams wouldn’t use this extra money for their major league ballclub.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Lets try it this way

So I have 100% of the player pie today broken into 2 sections . . . lets say 80/20 . . . I am going to give you back 5% of the 20% and just assume that you are going to re-spend those dollars in the 80% section? Since Boras tends to land a lot of the top names, he in particular might have a hard time doing that and just trusting the owners that his slice of the pie will be the same . . . that is why he would care. Who says the owners wouldn’t take those $ and reinvest in other ways? Like moving from Tuscon to Glendale or revamping their park. There is certainly no guarantee that the slice of the pie would remain the same with slotting. It could be negotiated that way, but that seems unlikely.

I am not a good teacher, so that probably makes no sense, but that is the best I could come up with.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

by jc2313 on Aug 20, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

this is rather simply resolved.

mlb gets their draft “reforms”. mlbpa gets more money, either in terms of revenue from merchandise sales or MLBAM or pension contributions or on and on. that is how you guarantee your slice of the pie remains the same. this is what they and every other league does to resolve such issues.

by larry on Aug 20, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

that's pretty much the high end you'll see.

you’re right that most/many are getting less. which makes it even less likely that anyone will give much of a shit about this.

by larry on Aug 20, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

If that was the case, this would be done

already. If you want to argue about the agents, fine, go ahead. But they do care and will have a say regardless of what you think. And the owners will have to make a significant concession to get this done. This is players versus owners even if they aren’t part of the union.

I know you like to argue just to argue at times. . . but thinking that the players will give up something valuable (to the owners) for nothing or close to nothing (even if they dont personally care) makes little sense.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

by jc2313 on Aug 20, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

sometimes, things don't get done because no one gives much of a shit about it.

and i never argued that they wouldn’t have to give up something of value. just that this isn’t going to be some contentious issue. the union can talk all they want about how terrible the injustice is and the horrible damage that will be done. and then mlb will do what i did, show them numbers – which, no matter how you want to slice them, are comparatively small – and call them on their bullshit and get a deal done. that’s what you do with people who pretend to care about something for leverage. this is about non-union members and guys who likely will never be union members. the players will sell those guys out for a bit more guaranteed money in their pockets.

by larry on Aug 20, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

My point is that it's a given the owners would give something up.

I said that they would rather money go to established players, not that it does now and I stand by that. How can you dispute that? Do you not pay attention to all the high draft picks who get paid large signing bonuses and never make it to the big leagues? It’s pretty common.

There is plenty of money being given to guys who don’t cut it. Look at our own draft picks if you want an example. You don’t think our established guys would rather they get a % of that over some high draft pick who never makes it in the big leagues?

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Read what I was responding to

Kenwo asking whether I thought the owners would have to give something up . . . the answer is without a doubt. So we agree there.

Have you ever paid attention to how much teams spend on an amateur draft versus what they spend on ‘established’ players? The average team spent a whopping $5M on the amateur draft this year . . . for the entire draft! I dont think I have to explain how little that is in comparison to player salaries . . . and that even takes into account the length of time a team has control over these same players. Where a guy like Danks makes $500k this year . . . way under his market value. Amateur draft salaries are already depressed . . . you think Strasburg gets 4/16 on the open market? No. I think surpressing them more is a joke. But I side with the players and not the owners.

So I repeat, the money is already going there . . . this is just more greed from owners and the players union and I think it is a joke.

I'm not siding with owners, they're still giving out the same amount total.

The only thing the owners gain is less uncertainty, they are still going to pay the same amount, it’s just who the money goes to. I don’t know how this is greed by the owners if they will be paying the same amount.

I’m siding with established players. I’d rather pay Paul Konerko or Jermaine Dye an extra million a year, over giving Borchard a monster signing bonus to be terrible at baseball.

You could make the rookie contract shorter, if your issue is guys playing on their rookie deal, that would solve your issue. Giving out giant signing bonuses to guys who may never become anything is a stupid use of resources though. Reward only those who earn it. John Danks will get his money soon because he’s performed.

Giving out giant signing bonuses to guys who may never become anything is a stupid use of resources though.

No fucking shit?? So you are telling me when you get nothing from an investment it isnt good? Well, I guess handing out ludicrous contracts to underperforming veterans is not a waste of resources then? How do you feel about the $2.6M waste of resources Beckham got?

And I challenge you to show me that resources are currently used ‘stupidly’ in the draft . . . versus used ‘stupidly’ on current players through free agency . . .

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

Yeah.. lets use Gordon Beckham as our example

Because his performance is so common it should be used to prove the validity of a system.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

You miss the point

read my last question and do a little work if you really think the draft is a ‘waste of resources’

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

by jc2313 on Aug 20, 2009 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't miss your point, I think it's wrong.

I’ve read what you said, and I don’t agree with you. I don’t know how it’s safe to assume I didn’t read what you said, just because I think you’re wrong.

Clearly there are free agents out there that don’t live up to their contract, but a free agent is a far more certain thing then a kid coming out of highschool. Outside of injuries which are going to happen to both, I’ll take my chances with the guy I’ve seen play in the major leagues any day of the week.

Feel free to do a little homework to prove that the draft is as certain as free agent spending, and that it isn’t a waste of resources to give large bonuses to guys who haven’t proven themselves at the highest level.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 20, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

The research is out there

I have read some of it . . . and I will see if I can still find it. Not that you should necessary need that . . . look at the hoarding of prospects being done across MLB these days. There is a reason for that you know.

The reasearch, is not out there, to support the theory you posit. At least as far as I know . . . so I would be interested to read if you have it.

Yes they are hoarding them

Because so many don’t make it… You only need one free agent C.C. Sabathia, you need a lot of prospects.
