They Can't All Be Perfect
I hate to admit it, but I pulled a WU during this game; dozed off just after the Sox took the lead, and was out for good by the time Buehrle gave it back up.

good news is Sox dont face Weaver
Angels have won some ridiculous number like 16 of their last 19 on the road. That’s likely to stop on the last series of their roady as they have to be giddy doing this without Hunter of Vlad.
2 of 3 would be ideal. I think the goal needs to be 8-10 over by the end of the year and that will win the Central.

sucked that we wasted so many opportunities
and that buehrle gave the lead right back up… but at least the twins tigers and cubs lost…so all is not terrible.
i think we can get 2/3 from the angels. we have played them pretty well lately. as tone loc said….lets do it.

The Flats is an entertainment area near the ballpark. Everyone and their brother will tell you that the Flats is home to Shooters, where they shot the opening to the Drew Carey Show (the Cleveland Rocks version, not the Moon Over Parma version).
See the monument marking the spot where the river caught fire in 1969.
If you have a car – or some money to spend on cabs, go to Coventry St. in Cleveland Heights. Nice stretch of bars.

Kenny is a great position.......
He’s got a strong starting staff in place for the next three years and a developing young core…..
I think he will have about 20-30 mil to fill the spots (and some will be resigned) of Pods, Thome and Dye.
But he’s also gotta be looking at 2011. If (and a big if) all goes right he will be able to plug in Flowers and Viciedo for AJ/PK. This shaves off potentially another 18 million. And let’s not forget about Jordan Danks.
I think there’s a chance (if economy continues to improve, etc………) that the 20-30 mil available above could become closer to 35 mil or 40 mil……then again John Danks and Q need to be locked up.
Interesting stuff nonetheless…..
This is a world championship caliber starting pitching staff he's locked in for 3yrs
That’s what won it for us in ‘05. We’ll have a legitimate shot every year as long as these 4 stay healthy, just get to the playoffs and roll the bones.

I like the conclusion
that “(KW) is like the guy that came to the table with $500K and leaves with $50K”. And that he is being universally praised. Usually when someone says “he has big balls” that means someone is taking a riske they themselves would like to but could/would not. High risk, high reward. DB.
And, PF, he seems to think the Phillies did OK for the next 18 months. KW and Theo are idiots. I actually like this. It’s motivating. Keeps the chip right where it belongs – on the shoulders of Sox fans, White and Red.

And the next sentence . . . which makes even less sense. Would they use these numbers? No. But to evaluate why they made the trade, sure this works.
But for the purposes of understanding a club’s rationale and the implications of a trade, this will do fine
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
I'll take the wins above replacement

Wouldn't want to factor in that we have money & depth and the Padre's don't.
If you can afford to overpay then it doesn’t really matter. What it comes down to is this: In the playoffs, do you want Jake Peavy in your rotation or one of those 4? It doesn’t matter if those 4 are good, if the 4 we have are better.

From the article
Odds are Poreda is not going to be leading a rotation into a World Series in the next couple years.
uhhhhh… odds are Poreda will not be leading a rotation
It amuses me that Russell is just assigned
$3M of value as though the Sox are ‘losing’ that . . . there are plenty of Russells and/or Massets that are in the system now and can be had for next to nothing. Basically, we could have just traded Russell for Peavy and that would have been a bad deal . . . hell, they could have just given us Peavy for nothing and it would have been a bad deal! I don’t know where they get these people and why they publish this bullshit, but wow.
And I know it is early on a Monday . . . so maybe I am slow here, but why is Peavy’s value being discounted and the salary not?
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
well,
if you read some of the analysis of the trade, apparently carter has an upper 90s fastball and russell is awesome.

yea I tried to shoot that post down over their at Fangraphs
According to them Poreda is almost a guaranteed number 2 starter, Richard is already a number 4, Russell is a solid 7th inning guy, and Carter will be at worst an ace setup man.
Ok.
good to know Poreda has a 'power' slider as well
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
the thing this doesnt take in context is how rare Peavy is compared to those other pitchers
one can pick up russel for high A players from any team and we’re one draft away from getting someone like poreda/carter again
getting peavy with our ownership and avoiding a bidding war was a once in a lifetime opportunity
sure these pitcheres are worth “this much” and peavy is worth “this much” but there is only a few peavy’s and many types of these other pitchers
sorry if I didn’t make any sense

I think what your saying is that talent is evently distributed.
There are plenty of Poredas, Richards, Russells, Carters, but a 5 WAR pitcher is rare.
There is certainly value in concentrating wins in one player rather than spread out over 3-4.
If Carter and Rusell never perform above replacment level, how do they have value?
I’m too lazy to look up the methodology
By providing minor league depth?
Just guessing. I don’t get it either. All the guys in the top half should have asterisks by their “value”.
isn't replacement level just the def of a completely fungible player?
That would mean they have no value as a minor leaguer. shrug
It’s an interesting way to look at the trade in projected WAR, but I trust the entire braintrust of the White Sox financial team over this analysis. They have access to more perfect information than we do.
What is JR told KW that if he makes the playoffs on 2010 then he’ll pay for 2011-2012 payroll bumps?
well, if they don't, they have no value (or, potentially, negative value if they perform worse and one includes salary).
what he’s essentially doing is taking the range of possible outcomes for guys like russell or carter and figuring out what the value of all those outcomes mashed together is at this moment in time. obviously, there are a lot of factors in there so minds may differ on that. but the values ascribed to them at this point probably isn’t too far off. what i’m confused about is why there is no projected salary ascribed to these guys.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I didn't understand that either
but from the link in his article, it seems he might be using the numbers as monetary savings to the team with salary included. Not sure though, wasnt able to read that thoroughly.
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
then why have salary listed for major league players?
charts should be consistent
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Agree, I would think
you would present average value, production, for that type of prospect over the timeframe . . . AND the salary that goes along with it. I don’t understand the presentation either.

Some nice, young talent. have you seen that McCutcheon kid fly around the bases? Also the kid who just set the franchise record for HR’s in July? And their pitching is looking interesting.
