About 10 throws into the Wednesday long-toss session, bullpen coach Juan Nieves whistled to the White Sox dugout and gave the throat slash sign.

Just like that, Jake Peavy's day was done, and the pitcher's chances of making his debut for the White Sox this weekend in New York in doubt.

Ok maybe I am a sick bastard and a glutton for punishment.....

but if you aren’t going to bring anyone up to face the yankees…. why would you just not let Contreras give it another shot? He is the one that is the most capable of having a decent game. Will he get knocked out early? Probably. There is always a small chance of him giving you 6 strong innings though. Its not like the Red Sox were crushing him. If they start DJ, he’s going to give up 3 or 4 homers in that park.

kind of moot at this point isn't it

Until Peavy is healthy we’re throwing out replacement level pitchers at the 4 & 5 spots anyway, might as well throw Contreras out there again.

I think the argument that Contreras is above replacement level for

a SP is a pretty easy argument to make, so no I don’t think it is.

why Jenks wasn’t used in the 9th? By the radio or tv guys or Tweetz? Like an injury?

If you use him in the 9th

and by chance he keeps them scoreless… who do you then use in the 10th? I doubt it would be Bobby… only maybe, and a very small maybe, if there was some chance the Sox took the lead in the top – but even then I’d doubt it.

One catch (and 1 hit) does not make you a major league player... or does it?

by Brush Back on Aug 27, 2009 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So? Worry about it when you GET to the 10th.

Maybe it’s a quick inning and he can come back out for the 10th….
Maybe he gets through 10 and we gots to go to 11….

THEN bring in Pena or whomever.
You don’t sit on the closer when you want to hold the tie.

It might be an ever-so-slightly different philosophy if we’re playing at home. But the fact remains that we should probably exhaust our “good” arms before we turn to the “bad.”

by homesickalien on Aug 27, 2009 12:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just saying - normal coaching does what Ozzie did

At home you would have seen Jenks in the 9th with the hope that the Sox score in the bottom. On the road you will see almost every manager do what Ozzie did.

One catch (and 1 hit) does not make you a major league player... or does it?

There are certainly some

managers. almost every is a bit overstated, that will prescribe to the theory HSA poses . . . that being said, the difference between Pena and Jenks is probably not as great as most seem to think.

My thought - when was the last clean inning Bobby had?

And given that, how many in the last 2 months have been un-eventful. The reality is, outside Thornton, when not overused, who is in the BP that Ozzie can truly count on anymore?

The Sox should shut Peavy down and wait till 2010

There’s no point in pitching him this season. Even if he came out starting this weekend and tossed 4 straight no hitters, the Sox are still toast.

Add in the fact that he’s hurt and likely won’t pitch very well, and it seems pretty clear it would be colossally stupid to make him throw more this season.

by hitlesswonder on Aug 27, 2009 9:06 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

There's a ton of baseball left

And 6 games against the Tigers. So let’s have a little bit of hope. Just a shred.

The Sox are not dumb enough to throw Peavy unless they think he is 100%. 2010 and beyond is at stake and KW knows that Peavy has to be a top tier starter to justify the rest of his contract.

Would you rather him get shelled by KC or Baltimore in his first start?

If he loses, at least he can say he lost to one of the best lineups in the league on the road. If he wins it’s great, if he loses, no one is going to think twice about it, it was the Yankees in NY. It seems like this is the best kind of situation for a young guy to break in.

for a young guy to break in is when he is ready . . . and it is highly questionable that he is. I would subscribe to the handling of a similar pitcher who made a meteoric rise last year . . . Tommy Hanson.

The Sox are a lot closer to that then we

are, so I will trust whatever decision they make. However, it is rare for a starting pitcher who has just 13 starts and 77 IP above A ball, to be ‘ready’ to start in the bigs. It obviously does happen, just not very often. Given the opponent and circumstance are probably not ideal . . . I would just err on the side of caution.

I thought he would have to significantly

improve his WAR this year to raise his career WAR, and I doubt he has done that. I imagine there has not been much of a shift at all, except perhaps a slight decline this year.

Or is the career number calculated differently? If my assumption is incorrect, tell me.

Frank's probably come to realize it'd be 1 year for 500,000

Maybe with incentives. Of course he did win comeback player of the year and get 4th in the MVP voting quite recently out of the blue so him doing it again isn’t impossible, just close to impossible.

What, exactly, is the point of starting Peavy for Charlotte instead of in New York?

At this point, in my view, Peavy has as good a shot as any of the other options to give us a chance to win Saturday. Even assuming the rehab start will be an abbreviated outing, it’s a pretty safe bet that whoever toes the rubber for the big club that day will not make it to 100 pitches. If the choice is Peavy at 90 percent for between four and six innings or Carlos Torres (or whoever) for anywhere from three to MAYBE six innings, I think Peavy is the right choice.

Essentially, let’s let Peavy have his rehab start with the big club. We aren’t going to win that game (or have any shot at the playoffs) without his ass anyway, what’s the difference?

I doubt it has anything to do with Peavy's ego.

There is a question of his elbow not being 100% and it’s much more desireable to risk a loss for a minor league team than a major league team in a pennant race.

1 guy won't make a difference

5 games back on the loss side with 36 to play means if the Tigers play .500 the Sox need to go 23 and 13 to tie. So really, the entire team needs to catch fire and whether or not Peavy starts one or two additional games this season in itself means absolutely nothing.

So why risk further injury, if in fact that’s a risk.

by Dick Allen's batting helmet on Aug 27, 2009 3:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Definitely. If pitching can get a pitcher hurt, then pitchers absolutely should not pitch.

Then we should throw a pitching machine next game

cause there’s a chance any pitcher will take a liner off the face next time out, or blow his Achilles running to first, or any of the other inherit risks a pitcher takes when climbing on the bump.

by Shakey on Aug 27, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um, I think both of you are going overboard

If Peavy’s current injury is not completely healed to the satisfaction of the doctors and Kenny, then let him heal. There is a difference between the inherent risk every player has of getting hurt, and stupidly forcing a guy back when there is already something wrong with him.

The 2009 White Sox....like a 40 degree day.

by Ozzie Montana on Aug 27, 2009 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Isn't there also a difference between an injury that could cause long term damage if meddled with, and one that cannot?

His elbow is obviously fine, with the possible exception of swelling and soreness. His ankle is obviously at or near 100 percent. There is, based on what we know (which is less than what they know, of course), I see no reason to pitch him somewhere other than New York on a day we could REALLY use him.

If he wasn't close to 100%, would they start him in Charlotte, or would they do bullpens until he finally was close to 100%?

I think the latter.

If there is a real risk, then he should not be pitching ANYWHERE, not just on the big club. That’s all.

obviously no one should - and no one expect idiots do - send players, particularly pitchers, on rehab assignments if they aren't medically cleared to play.

peavy of course is basically healthy, other than the soreness one would expect from ramping up (and obviously he took that line drive last time out). rehab, especially after three months out, is basically ST.

I don't like that either.

What if the pitching machine takes a liner to the chute which distorts the trajectory of the pitch and makes it impossible to throw strikes? What if the barrel of a broken bat switches off the power lever?

So many things could go wrong. We should just forfeit all games for lack of ability to pitch.
