Maybe The Sox Should Play These Guys: White Sox Minor League Update

There's been significant agitation to see Daniel Hudson in the White Sox rotation. Contreras' lovely performance today will certainly fuel those who have thought Hudson, or someone else, should have been in there for Jose's past few starts. Now that the season is essentially over and roster expansion is upon us, do you think the White Sox should add Hudson to the 40 man roster and have him make some starts in September?

No sense putting him up on the 40 man roster. Plus it couldn’t hurt to get another look at Torres

by jeeves on Aug 29, 2009 6:40 PM CDT reply actions

If his fastball is 90-92, that means he doesn't

have much room for error. It doesn’t look like he’s got the major league command he’d need to succeed. The Sox could use a good arm in the pen I guess, but they’re pretty much out of it so what’s the point?

THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY

by colintj on Aug 29, 2009 7:09 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I'd love to see it

but it doesn’t make much sense. Roster and option issues aside, he’s pitched a lot of innings for his first full year of pro ball. I suspect that’s the reason they didn’t send him to the AFL. If they had plans on calling him up this year, we probably would have seen him go today.

no, but

I hope he has a good spring training though and makes the starting rotation at the beginning of the year.

So that means he should debut for the Sox sometime next year. Anything short of that is failure.

Mastering his domain

Clevelan Santeliz, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Monday’s stats: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Santeliz’ 0.85 ERA in 36 games for the Barons certainly catches you eye, as does a fastball that gets into the mid-90s. The only problem is he rarely throws it for strikes, as he issued 27 walks over 35 innings in the first half of the season. Since then, things are starting the click, as the 23-year-old Venezuelan has issued just four walks during the month of August while moving into the closer role and going 8-for-9 in save opportunities. The stuff has certainly always been there, and if he can stay in the strike zone, it could be his ticket to the big leagues as early as next year.

appy league surprises
Bristol LF Brady Shoemaker (White Sox)
Age: 22. Drafted: 19th round, Indiana State

The top hitter in the league, the righthanded-swinging Shoemaker leads all Appy Leaguers in on-base (.426), slugging (.585), doubles (21) and extra-base hits (30). He’s hitting .351, but he trails the current batting champ (more on him in a second) by two points. The slim deficit means that a few hits today could secure the batting title for Shoemaker, who caught the eye of opposing managers. One praised him for his opposite-field power, his ability to consistently drive the ball and his steady effort. Another labeled the 6-foot, 200-pound outfielder as a "now-body guy," but someone with great hitter’s hands and the best present hit tool in the league.

"The ball has a different sound coming off his bat," Princeton manager Jared Sandberg said. "He found the barrel most of the time, and he understands the strike zone as well. He’s going to have to hit as he moves up, but he has ability to do so."

Jeff (England): Joe Serafin has made a great start to his pro career, especially for a 37th rounder, with a 4.14 K/BB, 1.67 BB/9 as well as an improving K/9 since his jump to Low-A, but is he is for real? And do you know much about what he throws?

Matthew Eddy: White Sox lefty Joey Serafin works in the mid-80s with a fringy breaking ball, but the University of Vermont product shows poise and command, which often can be enough to dominate in Rookie ball and low Class A.
Joe LeCates (Easton, MD): Hey, Matt, I was curious who has really caught your eye/ear so far in the Appy this year?

Matthew Eddy: Joe, Wilking Rodriguez, our Helium cat this time, is probably the biggest riser. I touched on Princeton righty reliever Scott Shuman in the Tuesday Dish this week. He could move quickly as a power reliever with two plus pitches. Also, The White Sox have an 18-year-old Venezuelan catcher named Miguel Gonzalez with Bristol. He’s got a bit of a thick body but he impressed observers by hitting .300 and by driving the ball consistently (15 doubles). If he can stay at catcher, he’s got a shot. Keep an eye out for the Appy League Top 20 prospects list, which will be published online in a few weeks. (Don’t have a date yet.)

Dan Remenowsky
Kannapolis Intimidators
Signed by the White Sox as an undrafted free agent in July of last year, Remenowsky has paid huge dividends thus far. One would be hard-pressed to find a more astronomical strikeouts-to-innings pitched ratio, as the 23-year-old closer has whiffed 106 batters over just 61 1/3 frames. Meanwhile, he has walked just 15 batters while allowing 38 hits. Remenowsky’s 23 saves rank third in the South Atlantic League, and only one Kannapolis pitcher (Charles Leesman) has exceeded his win total of seven.
