'09 White Sox - Too many brain cramps.
Aside: The game tomorrow will be great because...
David Wells is an amazing announcer! Who cares if its an irrelevant game. Shame he’ll eventually say something so stupid he’ll get booted off the air, but until then!
i can't wait til he says something stupid and gets booted.
I don’t like that fat bastard. The way he treated frank thomas who was hurt legitimately and then took off 4 months with a sore back has always disgusted me.

I read Ozzie's comments.....
its starting to wear a little thin on me. He’s working hard? I sat out there in Boston and watched the team do absolutely NOTHING in pre game. He hasn’t put the right lineup out there since we’ve acquired Rios. He doesn’t even get thrown out of games for the hell of it like some managers do to fire up the troops….. He has not done a good job this year.
The way he handled the Beckham call up was lousy, the way he handled the Linebrink “demotion” has been lousy, the way he handled the Rios acquisition has been lousy…..

and I wouldn't exactly condemn him for his handling of Beckham
Sure, I didn’t appreciate it at first, but after taking a long look back, it certainly seems like he handled that situation pretty well.

even the comments he made before beckham got called up
“if he is up here we are in trouble” and then a week later he gets called up… i don’t know. it was silly. can’t you just say “he gives us the best chance to win”?

playing him 75 games in a row kind of says that without saying it
Ozzie, like everyone on the team, has made plenty of mistakes this year but the Beckham treatment is not one of them.

He didn't get off to a great start though.
Might have played a part, maybe not but it couldn’t have helped his confidence. He did the same thing to Poreda too. I like Ozzie but he has not managed this team well, imo.
maybe playing in the big leagues as a 22 year old
with only a couple months of experience also had something to do with his slow start

but why not try to give a 22 year old a little confidence instead of doubting he belongs?
Hawk will never invite me to the booth now that I’ve questioned this…..

Glad I missed this one
The players deserve the blame, but I’ve read and heard several times this year that the players rarely practice their defense before games. Blyleven said it in Minny and KenWo said it this week in Boston. Both times it was pointed out that Pods basically stands around doing nothing during the pregame. That needs to change and that either needs to come from Ozzie or the veterans and it doesn’t appear that PK or Dye is a vocal enough leader. Beckham will be that leader in 2 years or so. His defense has improved a ton over the last month and I know he is working to improve.
Hopefully 2010 will see a commitment to getting better defensively. That means Pods and Dye are both gone. Means Ramirez needs to show a willingness to work to improve his defense or he will be moved. I question the work ethic on this team. Very ungrindy.
by Duck99 on Aug 29, 2009 4:22 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
work ethic/ team attitude
isn’t that what the manager gets paid to manage? Because ozzie has failed miserably in both cases this year.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Fundamentals
I’ve never been to a sox spring training before so I don’t know how he runs his camps. However, for all the ‘talk’ on how we are going to improve our bunting, baserunning, defense and fundamentals, I would imagine it’s all fun and games there too. Honestly, I’ve never seen a worse team fundamentally in my life. His tirade to the press was long overdue and I hope he had/has the balls to say it to his team too. I doubt it though.
i think he needs to stop making "tirades to the press"
and start doing things a little bit differently. I’m not calling for his head but he hasn’t been very good this year.
Kenwo4life=ratings
youre crazy if you think he wouldnt say that to the players.
"I come here, make the lineup, go to sleep and watch (bleeping) Little League games."-Ozzie Guillen
It really needs to come from the entire
Organization as a whole. I know Boston and Minny won’t promote a guy unless they meet certain offensive and defensive requirements. I shudder to think what the Sox organization has in that regard. Is Viceido going to be promoted with a sub 700 OPS and 40 errors?
by Duck99 on Aug 29, 2009 4:43 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
no. he's not.
and that whole thing about the minnesota organization? it’s not real.
I think there's sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. - Ichiro
We'll see. DV is going to the fall league
And I’ll bet he’s in Charlotte next spring. As for Minny they have done 10x the job of developing players from their system in the last 10 years compared to the Sox. That may change with Buddy Bell but that remains to be seen.
by Duck99 on Aug 29, 2009 4:55 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

So if Pods was shagging flys during pre-game
he’d all of a sudden turn into a great or even respectable defensive player. Please. I appreciate and respect KenWo’s thoughts about the pregame in Boston but I will disagree and say that has little to nothing to do with why the Sox are playing particularly lousy this season.
Going hard during warm-ups isn’t going to all of a sudden change who they are.

you see QBs throwing passes, receivers running routes
nba players taking jumpers and practicing free throws…. Listen- I’m not an idiot. I’ve seen teams warm up.. do they play around and just hang out- yes… this was by far the least work I have ever seen being done. usually you see guys taking infield- middle infielders working on the turn at 2nd… batters will work to all fields… they will run the bases after their first round… none of this happened. They seriously all just stood there which gave the impression of an aloof/ I don’t give a fuck attitude.
Kenwo4life=ratings
maybe I don't pay enough attention to that stuff

If Pods choose to practice you're damn
Right he would improve. Reading the ball off the bat is a huge part of OF play and when you go to a place like Fenway once a year or the dome where the background is completely different then yeah he should be shagging balls. And maybe he wouldn’t whiff on a lazy flyball like he did in minn or jump 5 steps in front of the fence like he’s done time and time again. Fielding, baserunning and situational hitting can all be improved through repetition and mental preparation. Read Outliers.
by Duck99 on Aug 29, 2009 5:17 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I disagree
Pods would still be a crappy player even if he spent his entire winter reading fly balls off a bat. And he would still be afraid of the wall.
Just like Paul Konerko would still be the same hitter (and baserunner) he is, even if he spent 3 months of his off-season hitting the ball to right field and running around the bases. Veterans are who they are and no amount of practice will change it.

So it's Ok to be shitty and lazy if the
Other teams are too? If you lead the league in errors then you need more reps. Maybe the Sox need a change in culture as far as defense is concerned. The Sox were so desperate for a leadoff hitter they didn’t give a crap if Pods would even attempt to improve his defense.
If the Sox are smart they will put all their marbles on Beckham and his work ethic to rub off on his future teamates. I saw Ripken taking ground ball after ground ball in the early 80’s before a game. He was the only guy on the field. Not the most instinctive or athletic guy but he turned out OK. If you spend an extra 20 friggin minutes a day you can catch 100 more balls than your competition. Its amazing that fringe players don’t do all they can to improve.

I don't mind Ozzie's frustration
Everyone is frustrated, from the fans to the players to management and ownership. For whatever reason they just haven’t put it all together this year and they are imploding at the wrong time — late in the summer.
That said, this is clearly a transition year, the farm system is in decent shape, as is the ML roster, and they should probably be better in 2010.
Larry mentioned it’s hard to win when you have essentially 3 starting pitchers and what amount to a very mediocre offense and defense.
Early on they had at least very good starting pitching, now that don’t even have decent starting.
I’ve got plenty of complaints with Ozzie’s lineups, but at this point it just seems like wasted breath. The real problem is just not enough good players, like almost always.
Defense worse than mediocre
Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game last year.

Hard work sets a tone...
During the July series in Minnie the radio announcers went out of their way to comment on how little the Sox did in BP (as in more than any visiting team they’ve ever seen). And you would think that the Metrodome would be a field (astroturf, bad background, etc.) where you would want to take some fielding practice.
And since when was it preferable, when a team is in a season long underachieving funk, to you know, allow them take it really easy out on the field.
As much as I like Ozzie he should have been working those guys a lot harder, not necessarily that they are going to become much better players, but because many or most winning teams seem to be hard working teams.

For 3 seasons
Ozzie has talked about improving the defense and the “small ball” hitting – Cora was moved to the bench so he would run the Spring training to improve fundamentals – farewell Rock… then Cox was brought in because he was this great running and bunting coach – farewell Razor. We heard all off season about how Fields worked with Cora and he made these great strides fundamentally. So here we are… same shit, different day.

See the entire thread above. Not calling you out at all, but there are others here who feel you can’t improve after you are 18. The organization needs to check themselves. How can you be the worst in fielding and baserunning (which are effort more than talent) and feel good about the teaching of this organization?
by Duck99 on Aug 29, 2009 10:01 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Let's keep beating this dead horse
Young players certainly can improve. I never claimed otherwise Gordon Beckham has already become a much better fielder in his limited Major League duty. I’m sure that came through more repetitions. Guys in the minors are getting better. Veteran guys, who have proven to be average fielders at best, are not going to suddenly become Gold Glovers because they’re going to be ‘blue collar’ players. At a certain point, players reach their peak level of talent. Blood, sweat, and tears won’t make them better.
As for the Sox organization having lackluster teaching in the organization, they have exactly two position players who have come up through the organization. Both of whom appear to relatively adequate fielders, baserunners, and one who seems to be the grindy type player all Sox fans fellate themselves about.
Kind of hard to call out the organization’s teaching when the majority of players come up through other farm systems.

observation from denver
I thought Hurdle was doing a good job, but this team here just played like they were asleep.
So… seeya Hurdle, here’s Tracy. Yeah, they shoulda fired the players but you know the saying, it’s easier to fire 1 guy… I like Hurdle, he’s a stand-up guy. Good manager, but that’s not enough.
Then the Rockies took it the firing to heart, and are now in the hunt.
The Sox aren’t just losing, they’re getting embarrassed this week. It’s embarrassing to have this much veteran presence on the team and play like this.
