New plan for 2010
Go get Tony LaRussa and get him to convince Pujols to come over a few years later. Granted they’ll probably have won the World Series again by then…
We need to win 2 of 3 for the remaining 32 games
Haven’t had such a stretch so far this year, but hopefully we can avoid the sweep today and win the series in Min (I like the pitching matchups, maybe the offense will show up)
They've matched their hit total.

i am wrestling with that still and remain undecided
i do think that factored into the ump’s reasoning though.
Time for Bulls and Bears..
This season is toast…
if people are going to keep posting this,
they should at least come up with a unique variation. like:
“This season is ova. Time for Ferris State Cross Country.”
I think some umps should, depending on the zone they've established.

well put. it isn't as if there's a way to use this bullpen for multiple innings without using some knob-gobblers.

I'm so happy the Yanks respect us enough to use middle relief for 3.2 innings
And pull out the starter after the 3rd.
Pena and Linebrink = Bad
Thornton = Good, Dotel, Jenks = Decent, Williams = Crappy last two outings, pretty good before that
Which is again better than most ML bullpens
I suppose the "choice" is to leave Garcia out there to go as long as possible.
But it seems like a similar result was likely no matter what.

I'm ready for more of the youth movement.
We were floundering in April and May when Beckham came up and gave us a boost. Getz has had a very good rookie year at 2nd. (by the way, we are 6-11 without him, since going on DL) Nix has been a good utility option and Danks and Floyd have been pretty steady. I guess we’ll find out next year what we have in Rios. Our vets have let us down since the ASB as has our bullben and defense. Time for more change.
I love JD but he is too expensive and a defensive liability, he needs to go. Thome, same situation. Too slow, too old and too expensive. We’re stuck with Paulie for another year but he might have one more good year left in him. Count, Dotel and possibly Jenks will be gone too.
Take the money shaved from payroll next year and get a 5th starter and a Chone figgins or Randy Winn. In 2011, hopefully we’ll have Viciedo, Flowers, Danks, Hudson, Mitchell, etc.
If only I had any faith in the "so-called" talent we have down there - be scared, very very scared
One catch (and 1 hit) does not make you a major league player... or does it?
No - no more lumbering slow guys with their upside behind them
I thought that earlier in the year, but the last month has me no longer wanting to see Thome, Dye.
One catch (and 1 hit) does not make you a major league player... or does it?
sure.
let’s just throw the baby out with the bathwater. here’s another way to build the team: get rid of the players with less value and keep the ones with more value. i know, i know. maybe i’m one of those crazy fans who wants to win games and doesn’t give a shit how it’s done.
If only it were so easy
The one player everyone wants gone is Linebrink and he is impossible to move and probably highly unlikely they pull a MacDougal and eat that contract.

no. actually it is that easy.
and i wasn’t referring to sunk costs. i was referring to thome and dye. one is not like the other in terms of value. this is a no fucking brainer.
and, at any rate, linebrink can easily be made irrelevant. just don’t pitch him in high leverage situations. done.
I agree
for some reason they can’t get it through their heads on Linebrink.
The only thing that gives me hesitation on offering a new contract to Thome is health and the length/cost of the contract. But, a one-year incentive laden deal would be fine with me.
I don’t want to see Dye in RF anymore.

when you look at the statistical difference between this year's team and last year's team, the most glaring difference is in slugging.
this isn’t the deadball era. this is 2010, this is the american league, and this is us cellular field. deciding to further punt on power is a stupid idea. if you want better defense, more speed, whatever, have it at. that has nothing to do with the DH spot. the rules give you a position to put someone who can hit the ever-loving shit out of the ball. use it appropriately. thome has been the best hitter on this team. and it isn’t close.
he's got a year left with the nats, right?

This isn't the deadball era but it is the post-steroid era.
Defense, pitching and speed is once again the way to build a winning club. If we can get Thome for, say 5 mil next year, I’m all for it. We need a left handed power bat. If the price is higher than that, I would look at other options. Thome used to hit the ever loving shit out of the ball but he has drawbacks too. He can’t play the field, can’t run and has had health issues the past few years.
US cellular field is more a product of the teams we fielded than park factor.
yeah

good speed, good defense and cheap.
I’d rather spend the money on pitching. If I was concerned with ops+, I’d keep Dye.
you're not concerned about a guy who's age 35 season
saw his bat completely fall off the table? he’s a decent buy low candidate, but i’d want some kind of insurance.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.

I think the only issue we may have is the price of Thome.
If we could sign for 5 or 6m I’d love to see him back. On the free market, he might get more and I don’t think he’s worth more than that.
lots of things at play.
only al in play, thome will probably not leave the sox to go to a team with absolutely no shot at getting out of the shitter (i.e., baltimore), maybe give a marginal discount to stay in chicago, etc.
somebody's shoved a red-hot poker up our ass, and i want to know whose name is on the handle!

He was injured this year but that goes with the age.
I think he will demand about half the salary Dye will in the off-season and he is a pretty damn good ballplayer. Won’t hit for power like Dye but will hit for the same average, add team speed and much improved defense.
I just threw his name out there, maybe there is a better alternative but given the choice between Dye at 12m and Winn at 6m, I’ll take Winn and go after Lackey.
i'm not sure why that's relevant.
the Sox are obviously free to buy out the option at 1MM, at which point any team may negotiate a fee for his services.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.
then why suggest that as the expected salary?
Dye-type players were not getting anywhere near 12 per this past off-season.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.
that's his contract option.

Thome is too much of an injury risk for full time DH
but I’d keep him with a cheap enough incentive-based contract to platoon with a RH similarly inexpensive slugger.

the offense is below average...
yet nobody can get replaced. there’s always some excuse….he’s cheap, he’s a rookie, he’s a grinder, he’s not the problem, blah blah blah.
everyone forgets how anemic the overall offense was in 2005. the best pitching staff wins the central every year.

sox have outscored and outslugged and have a higher batting average and on-base percentage than the tigers.

Buehrls, Count, and the pen
have been atrocious down the stretch, such as it is. Not everyone has forgotten how we did it in 2005. What’s our record in one-run games this year vs. 2005? What is our average runs/ga,e this year vs. ’05? How does our defense look this year vs. ’05? The wan “tirade” yesterday by Ozzie resembles the one he made in ’05 around this time, minus the passion and fear.
Bring on 2010. Peavy and Mitchell injuries are just further confirmation that this ain’t our year, karmically speaking.
We’re a pack of a-holes. And my tradition of contributing absolutely nothing to this site... continues.
A karmical defeat
We’re like the Mets! So plagued by injuries, if only we had our best guys out there we’d be fantastic!
i agree.
i’m just letting my frustration with the “this team has foundered, so get rid of everybody over 30” nonsense get the best of me. this isn’t r.b.i. baseball for the old nes. there are contract considerations and the ability to fill roster spots at play.
2009 thome =/= 2009 dye, not to mention that finding lefties with thome’s pop ain’t easy or cheap and dye will probably be able to find a team who’ll let him play the outfield next year. and for better or worse, paulie is at his career numbers and ain’t going anywhere.
somebody's shoved a red-hot poker up our ass, and i want to know whose name is on the handle!
by Toonderstrook on Aug 30, 2009 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions
It's not that simple.
Thome and Dye are good ballplayers. They used to be great ballplayers and they make a lot of money, deservedly. I would rather underpay a young up-coming talent as overpay for past performance if the results were similar and the money could be used to improve our farm system or our pitching.
but with thome, you're still getting good performance.
and there aren’t that many cheap lefty options to insert into the lineup next year. if you’re advocating blowing it all up for next year, it makes sense to forego thome. if you’re not, it doesn’t make sense to do so just because he’s old.
somebody's shoved a red-hot poker up our ass, and i want to know whose name is on the handle!

We will see
Dye has much more value, imo. Younger, can play a position (not well) and healthier, has been more productive than Thome over the past 4 years.
Dye has been atrocious in the field.
He is effectively a DH and his second half is alarming.
Moreover, Thome gets on base. That should be a premium consideration. I’d pay more for Thome.
by hitlesswonder on Aug 30, 2009 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions
his fielding is such that he's basically a DH.
the position adjustment plus his shite D is equal to or worse than the DH position adjustment. which means that the bat is all that matters and obviously Thome has the better bat. adjust somewhat for age and baserunning and they’re about equal i’d guess.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.
doubtful. the market for abreu/dunn was soft in part bc their defensive ineptness was so blatant and deleterious to their overall value
dye is no exception
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
I'm not saying blow up next year at all. With the starting pitching we have for next year, we should be the favorites to win the division.
No. Four starters doesn't make anyone a favorite the August before the next year

Especialfuckingly since he might be cheap to sign
He clearly is picky about where he plays, and he’s restricted to the AL. Who else in the Midwest is going to sign him? It might not be true, but I think it’s possible Thome just wants to play a couple more years in a place he’s comfortable. If he’s happy with the organization and is content to take relatively modest money, it would be stupid to let Thome go.

really.
the comment was in response to “Thome and Dye are good ballplayers. They used to be great ballplayers and they make a lot of money, deservedly. I would rather underpay a young up-coming talent as overpay for past performance if the results were similar and the money could be used to improve our farm system or our pitching.” you know, where you were talking about going out and getting players, either free agents or prospects. you weren’t talking about calling guys up already in the system. so yes, in this discussion, “acquire” does not mean calling up your own guys.
are you having trouble following strings? like when you starting talking about dye in a string about thome?
somebody's shoved a red-hot poker up our ass, and i want to know whose name is on the handle!
by Toonderstrook on Aug 30, 2009 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions
I think I'm following strings correctly.
I assumed most folks here knew a ‘prospect’ could be a minor leaguer from you own organization or from another. If you pay closer attention to the strings, I believe cheat asked where we would ‘acquire’ such a talent.
you were talking about underpaying someone new or improving your own.
you would improve your own with guys who are already there?

not to mention you wouldn't need to spend any money
to improve your system with prospects you’ve already got.

yikes.
this all started with you talking about whether to re-sign dye and thome. you said you’d rather underpay an up and comer (if similar results) or use that money to improve the farm system or pitching. so that’s all about spending money. when someone asks a question about acquiring talent in response to your comment about spending money, you think the question was about the prospects already in the system?

ok, i'll bite.
you commented about spending money saved from not re-signing thome and picking up dye’s option on a cheap, up and coming talent ready to produce now in the majors. subsequently, somebody asked a question about where to “acquire” such talent. (you know, because it doesn’t really happen.)
this had nothing to do with players currently in the system because (a) if there were major league ready guys in the system, we wouldn’t have to use any of the thome/dye money on them because they’re already signed, and (b) nobody would ask the question, “where do we find this kind of guy” if they were talking about players already signed by the sox.
my questions are why did you respond to the question with “from your own farm system” and disagree with my comment that in the context of the string, “acquire” was not referring to calling up guys from your own system?
somebody's shoved a red-hot poker up our ass, and i want to know whose name is on the handle!
by Toonderstrook on Aug 30, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions
Acquire =/= from your farm system
Is your brilliant equation, not mine. As far as where to find such talent (you know, because it doesn’t really happen), I would offer the following names. Beckham, Ramirez, Quentin, Thornton, Getz, Danks & Floyd. Imagine the possibilities!
"Acquire" in baseball speak means
Either a Free Agent signing, a successful waiver claim, or a trade. Universally.
but what about
the players the sox will acquire when the rosters expand tomorrow?

well in that case, what you said amounts to
pitching and defense wins division titles. there’s nothing i’ve seen to suggest that it matters where you get your wins from in the regular season.

I guess I won't argue with that...
Specifically I was thinking:
I’m assuming anything more than a scrapheap starter will be too pricey for Sox. I don’t need to see more money spent on relievers, I’m hoping the Sox can find decent arms in the minors and off the heap. The have a good defensive CF now. I think they need a bat.
by hitlesswonder on Aug 30, 2009 8:29 PM CDT up reply actions
they need a DH and a RF
i think they should keep Thome, sign some scrapheap 5th starter candidate(s) and then figure out the RF situation. i think a trade is somewhat likely, as Danks, Viciedo, Mitchell, and, say, Marrero, would probably be enough to lock up a RF of some kind. i’m protecting Hudson and Flowers, since their services may well be required in ‘10. That’s something like 100-110MM, right back around ‘06-’08 levels.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.
i say bring sweaty freddy back

i'm pretty sure Freddy's near replacement level.
though his last two starts have been somewhat encouraging. in any case, if you’re willing to take him on this year, why not next? freddy, hudson and somebody else can man the 5 spot. works for me. smoltz? penny? whatevs.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.
My guess is that Rios is in RF
With Pods in CF and Q in LF
But that’s just what I think they’ll. I’d like them to think bigger and, as you suggest, acquire a significant offensive talent for RF and keep Rios in CF.
Of course, then who will leadoff?!?

have you seen what he got on the 2009 FSR? J.D. and Q! are rated better.
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.
I agree, but the Sox have demonstrated
1) They don’t care about CF defense
2) They do care about having a “classic” leadoff hitter
Add in that Pods will be cheap and I think the chances of him in CF next season are much more than negligible.
by hitlesswonder on Aug 30, 2009 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions
i disagree.
they’ve shown they will disregard CF under certain circumstances. Rios and Rowand are significant counterexamples.
as to the latter, i don’t really remember what kind of leadoff men the Sox have featured in Kenny’s term. i do know that the media has made it a talking point and to that extent, i figured it was all that mattered.

i wouldn’t mind. we’re still in need of 1 position player.

Not what I said at all.
Baseball is a marathon, unlike any other sport. It’s a crapshoot every year, regular season as well as playoffs. The best formula for both regular season and playoffs is pitching and defense. Hitting helps.
by crapshoot, i mean "there is no predicting who will win"
which is what the data shows. if there’s no predicting who will win in the regular season, then how could there be a formula for doing well?
2009 is just 2007 in 2008's clothing.
Go back through baseball history and look at the data.
Of course you have to factor in the injuries but it’s obvious that good pitching prevails.

And it has not been. No miracle curess here. 2010 is reasonable. If you want to stay positive focus on the future, not on what has a 5% shot to succeed (the remainder of this year). Play the lottery if you want long odds – at least there is some personal benefit, and the answer comes within a week.
