Asked about his thoughts on the weekend, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said simply, "Well, we came to New York and visited the new Yankee Stadium. It is a very nice ballpark. We also stayed at a very nice hotel. That's all I can really say about these past three days."

How closely have you been following the White Sox?

I follow the whole game, not just the White Sox. I probably couldn’t tell you their Double A roster, but it takes all of five minutes to catch up with what’s going on at the big league level.

he also doesn't closely follow the white sox' players either.
The Twins organization teaches its ballplayers HOW to play the game. The Twins will not have seen the defensive woes of the White Sox. Nor have they seen the lack of execution offensively, because they are taught how to get things done. They are taught to be team players rather than worrying about personal stats. And they don’t take plays off, let alone games! If you don’t buy into that philosophy, you are gone.

Teach baseball at its core in the lower minor league. You weed out the half-asses down there and go forward with gamers only. How tough can that actually be? This is a business, guys, make a simple business plan! No more missed cuts, missed bunts, not getting guys over, not getting guys in from third with less than two outs. The basics!

that’s real nice, jack. maybe since the white sox have two players who spent any appreciable time in the white sox minor league organization – and one is a pitcher – the organization is weeding out the shit.

If there were ever a time you'd think we might not be

at a severe psychological disadvantage vs the Twinks, it would seem to be now. We ought to be loosey-goosy with the attitude like, “Hey, we’re out of it…..let’s spoil their season.” Moreover, besides the psychological stuff, we’re not exactly facing great starting pitching. Plus, aren’t we due for a little hitting and a little luck? Christ.

by dantesox on Aug 31, 2009 1:31 PM CDT reply actions

Now that pretty much everyone has written the season off, we should sweep in the dome.

When we’re supposed to win, we lose. When we have no chance, we win. Can’t figure this team out at all. Detroit is getting their ass handed to them today. I’m calling a sweep in the dome and right back in the hunt by the end of the week.

You must have Dr. Nick as your personal physician.

Sweep in the Dome. Sure. Just like we were going to go into BOS/NY and kick ass because we do better against the really “good” teams. Like AJ hitting >.400 against the top 10 pitchers in the league. All of the guys turn it up for the increased level of competition.

While I'm here....

noticed in Perottos BP chat he thinks the Sox should have Alexei incenter, Rios in right and Beckham at short next year. I’m wondering if moves like that might not be dictated by what we can get on the free agent market or in trade as far as a productive offensive player. We do not have a good offense. Remember my plea for Bob Abreu? Well, he’s available and one possibility. But, I’m open to anybody who can provide offense.

I did not know that RF, CF, and IF were offensive positions.

Shows how much I know…

(And no, I’m not advocating for Alexei to move to CF, but I don’t think offense should be a part of the equation when deciding defensive position. Maybe I’m stating the obvious here, or maybe I’m fucking stupid. You be the judge.)

Kansas City Star commenter:

You people are all tremendous idiots and know nothing at all about baseball if you think for one second this is a bad move. I’m guess none of you have any idea at all how bad the entire organization was setup before Moore came in? Clearly you know nothing of how horribly neglected the farm system was before Moore was brought in. Despite what you may think you know about baseball, winning franchises do so because they have a strong farm system that is constantly feeding quality players to the big leagues. The Royals had the worst farm system in the major leagues prior to Moore. That type of damage takes YEARS to undue, and he is doing a really good job thus far with that. If you want to blame anyone blame Glass for gutting the farm system in the first place back in the mid-90s. Sure the Royals have been disappointing this year but it’s not because of a poor GM, the players have under performed said for Zach. The future is bright despite what the present looks like.

well, he's sort of right.

however, if you’re going to rebuild, just do that instead of this whole “let’s trade for mike jacobs and coco crisp so we can lose 98 games instead of 100”. what they’re doing at the major league level doesn’t make a lot of sense. they’re just throwing good money after bad.

There were some real head scratching acquisitions for them this year

Not sure who was implementing their strategy, but they obviously weren’t sober at the time.

by BobbySouthSide on Aug 31, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

They still gotta keep the locals interested,

and part of that is creating the illusion of near-term competitiveness. Implicitly saying “we’re gonna suck ass for five years” is a surefire way of ensuring that nobody bothers paying attention to your team. Making moves that only have short term value sends the message that the team believes they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. If you’re trying to send the message that you’re just a little bit of time and a few pieces away from competing, trading for a few pieces that will only be useful for a little bit of time isn’t a terrible idea.

The Royals had quite a few people thinking they might be competitive this year, and they looked like they might pull something off back in the early days of the season. It’s not like their intended branding was completely divorced from reality.

I still think the Erstad business was the Sox continuing to brand themselves as gritty/grindy, rather than attempting to actually win baseball games by playing good baseball.

by Dongfang Hong on Aug 31, 2009 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Preferably they should,

but if you can’t find a good match, I think that trading for someone replacement-level can be better than doing nothing from a marketing viewpoint. If the acquisition gets more people interested in watching the team than it turns off, then some short-term value has been gained. Could be that the ownership was pushing for some buzz in yet another boring year, and the front office couldn’t swing anything actually beneficial from a baseball standpoint. Which is still problematic, but at least isn’t inexplicable.

by Dongfang Hong on Aug 31, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Honestly.. any intelligent fan would rather see a team rebuild than a team be bad w/ a bunch of veterans.

Honestly.. any intelligent fan would rather see a team rebuild than a team be bad w/ a bunch of veterans.Who wants to watch Mike Jacobs on a bad team? I don’t know how that makes the game more enjoyable to anyone. I’d much rather watch my young guys improve than watch old guys be mediocre.

mike jacobs is not mediocre. he is replacement level.

of course, the epic mike jacobs trade thread on fangraphs illustrates that there are apparently people who think mike jacobs is awesome. boy, look at that first comment – oops about billy butler! and it just gets better and better from there.

good old ross gload
Don’t forget about Ross Gload – he can actually field and puts up similar offensive numbers (looking at .wOBA, .338 vs. .339).

and nunez(who they gave up for jacobs) actually has some value as a back-end guy imho.

Asked about his thoughts on the weekend, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said simply, "Well, we came to New York and visited the new Yankee Stadium. It is a very nice ballpark. We also stayed at a very nice hotel. That's all I can really say about these past three days."

by e-gus on Aug 31, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Fine replacement level

Doesn’t really change the fact there is on reason to add them to the team, mediocre or replacement level they wouldn’t make the Royals good so they shouldn’t waste resources on adding them.

by Grinder in Training on Aug 31, 2009 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

When you stop trying to acquire good players, and start trying to acquire players who are good at a certain thing, you make bad choices.
