White Sox Minor League Update Doesn't Take A Day Off
One of the reasons prospects don't pan out is injuries. Pitchers are particularly prone to them, of course, but it can strike any player. The White Sox have been fortunate of late that none of their top prospects have experienced catastrophic injury. However, as should be expected, a number of their lower ranked prospects have had injuries which have limited, or stalled, their development.

low A to AAA is a big jump for one season…
but he did stuggle in high A for a while too
here’s hoping he makes another adjustment

I was thinking
you’d probably have a tougher time finding a player who spent time at every full-season minor league level than one who started at low-A and made it to the majors in the same year. You just don’t see guys move through EVERY level of the minors in a year. If you’re making big jumps — and you acknowledged that it’s a big jump — you almost always see them just make the biggest jump as well.

I was a little worried about Hudsons lightning quick ascension being unrealistic
(especially if you include rumors that he may be a spot 5th starter this year)
but that is an excellent point, thank you

reading more into this
yes those who started in low A and make the majors in the same year are more common than those who spend a whole year at each level. If you need a full year at each level, chances are, you aren’t good enough for the bigs. However, those jumping to the majors in one year are often talents along the lines of Beckham and those players often skip levels. However, Hudson has been going through EVERY level like you said and hasn’t skipped any levels in one year which is quite unusual.
I don’t know if he’s just simply very good at making adjustments or what but its certainly more encouraging than a warning sign

J Mitchell has a .450 OBP and 18BB's/20K's
Looking forward to having some guys with plate discipline like Mitchell and Flowers along with Bacon. Flowers hasn’t shown that in AAA yet, but it’s probably because he’s been challenged more since he got off to a slow start. He’s hitting .300 now and I’ll bet he produces a much better OBP next year and will be ready in 2011.
Don’t know if there’s been any studies on it, but I would imagine that plate discipline is learned early on and can’t be taught after reaching the majors. That’s why I’m worried about the investment in Viciedo. I’ve heard comparison to Sandoval, but he’s hit .330 or more at everly level with a .900 OPS. Does Viciedo earn a promotion to AAA next year with a .700 OPS? I would hope not.
viciedo's cumulative numbers don't tell the whole story
as others have pointed out, he’s improved at the plate every month so far this season.
april: .221/.232/.286/.518
may: .293/.314/.397/.711
june: .276/.336/.410/.746
july: .303/.354/.472/.826
that’s a pretty encouraging trend. and keep in mind that he’s only 20 years old, one of the youngest players in AA, and adjusting to an entirely new country and culture. no reason to think he won’t continue to develop and improve.
that said, i still don’t think he starts next season in charlotte, but there’s no reason to be discouraged by his performance to date.
freddy going to try his hand at players closer to his age.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
Heh -- just took a look at the schedule
if Peavy makes his first start at Yankee Stadium on the 29th — that’ll be the second game of the three game set there — he’d make his next start… yup… at Wrigley. Chicago sports writers would have a field day with Peavy’s “ironic” start for the Sox against the Cubs.
Maybe he will pitch this year after all
Jake Peavy, RHP, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte)
Thursday’s stats: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
The biggest name to move, and the biggest surprise at the trade deadline, the big question about the White Sox acquisition of Jake Peavy revolved around whether or not he’d even pitch again this year. With seven weeks left to go in the season, things are looking more positive than ever after three dominant innings in his first rehab start while getting his fastball up to 93 mph and complementing it with a sharp breaking ball.

And I’m a fan of the Black/Phegley/Buch/Mitchell/Bellamy picks.
by The Big Hurt on Aug 14, 2009 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Strange that you think it is a weak
class, but are a ‘big fan’ of several of the top picks . . . relying on some very long shots to make it a strong class? Goodwin was like a .0001 % chance of happening . . . seemed unlikely that Jones/Morgado would both sign from the beginning. If the sign Morgado, they pretty much signed everyone you could have expected. So, not sure you can like all the top picks and then call it a weak draft based on them signing multiple players they were unlikely to sign in the first place?
"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."
Actually Morgado looked like a very easy sign
He had fallen out of favour at Tennessee and he was drafted higher than expected, but then he went out and dominated at the Cape. Nobody had heard of Jones at first, BA didn’t have him amongst their top 50 (or however many it was) prospects in California, so I definitely thought he was signable at first. Goodwin there was never a chance at but I thought they had a shot at Williams if they really wanted him.
Maybe I’ll be proved wrong (it certainly wouldn’t be a first) but I just don’t think there’s a large enough pool of quality prospects as is.

Daniel Hudson, the White Sox’s secret weapon, has moved into launch position. It may not be much longer until Ken Williams pushes the button to bring him to Chicago.
Assistant general manager Rick Hahn and director of baseball operations Dan Fabian seem certain to report that Hudson is an option worth considering if Jose Contreras continues to falter as Ozzie Guillen’s fourth starter.
Hudson’s fastball was 91-92 m.p.h. Friday night, a bit lower than it has been at times. His slider and changeup were sharp, and he showed poise after five of the first nine Norfolk hitters reached base against him. Hahn likened him to a cross between Gavin Floyd and the Angels’ Jered Weaver.

Can someone with a better handle on these things tell me
whether bringing up Hudson before Sept call-ups (insane that this question has any legitimacy at this point) would start his arbitration clock early? Or would just putting him on the 40 Man Roster cause his clock to start?
it would start his clock to bring him up. being on the 40 man does not start it.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
about.com lied to me
or I am misinterpreting this:
A player with six or more years of major-league service (on the team’s 40-man roster) who is not under contract for the following season is eligible to file for free agency.
http://baseball.about.com/od/majorleaguebasics/a/freeagentprimer.htm
Just to be clear, Sept call-ups do not start the clock, since they are not on the 25-man? What would be the rule for the playoffs? And yes I know this is all highly speculative. I trust you and Jim enough at this point to believe bringing him up is not the best idea.
that’s just poorly worded. obviously, you can’t can’t have six years or major league service if you were only on the 40 man roster during part of those six years; need to be on the 25 man.
september call-ups accrue major league service time. and the rules regarding playoff rosters are extrememly lax so it’s almost not worth going into what they are. essentially, if the white sox were to want him on the playoff roster, they could get him on by saying he’s replacing a hurt player or something.
