Ozzie Guillen on Alex Rios: "What have I seen from Rios? A lot of outs. The only batting ninth guy making $5 million was me. This mother [bleeper] is making $10, $12, $14 million, he ain't going to be batting ninth [in 2010]. I'm going to make sure he earns his money. But right now I have to put him there because he's struggling. Next year, if we have Rios batting ninth we're in deep [crap] once again.''

Man Crush on Ozzie
for being so real, idk but the white sox are the team i identify with more than my other teams the raiders and lakers. ozzie is the man even though i think he gives struggling players to many chances i.e count, linebrink, and pena.
ozzie tells it like it is and is so old school i love it. when he told cle they choked that had me laughin for days.
hopefully he will do it the last game against the tigers.
prediction: Rios will start balling out after the angels series
YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOARD YES!

Is Rios really this bad?
Serious question. Is this just a horribly unlucky slump or have his offensive skills deteriorated that much? Do any of the sabermetrics on him suggest a bounce back year in 2010? Can we hope he at least posts a .330 OBO and a +.430 Slug% next year?

And you bastards want to fire Ozzie!
Maybe he just sticks Pena/Linebrink out there so he can have one of these for future use.
by Carbiner on Sep 12, 2009 11:36 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
i imagine he keeps using players
like pena and linebrink because the gm of the team, presumably with the “blessings” of the managing partner of the sox, traded away a top prospect and agreed to a relatively large contract to acquire the guys. ozzie would be a moron to not give the those players every chance to succeed until the folks that sign his paycheck tell him to do otherwise.

put it on the board
You’re not going to take anything away from the pitching staffs that we’ve faced, but we’ve been facing some pitchers this year it’s like, ‘Who the [bleep] is this guy?’ " Guillen said. “They don’t even belong in the [bleeping] big leagues, and they just kicked our ass. … I know who beat us, and I know who should beat us. We’ve faced some guys where they’ve called him up, faced us and get him back to [bleeping] Double A. … That’s how bad we’ve been.”

i'm taking ozzie's word on rios

by onlysoxfaninboston on Sep 13, 2009 5:44 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I see two equally troublesome possibilities with Rios...
1) Forgot how to hit. He’s been pretty healthy over his career, no reason for his performance to be hampered. So he just simply has lost his swing in a big way, and can’t find it again. This is solvable, probably with a new hitting coach or voodoo blood rituals. Get his LD% back up to 20 at least, take a few walks, shorter swing, much improved baBIP (.154? Ouch.), higher hr/FB%…nothing insurmountable, he just needs a cluestick.
2) PED use that tapered off after he got his contract year. He had a sub .700 OPS from 18-21, when it hit 750. At 22? .924. Scuffled a couple years at first, then up around .850 for two years. What changed? Same rough K:BB rate. Bout the same speed. Only thing that appears to change was power…take homers for example. 1, 10, 17, 24 by 2007 (15 in 2008 and 2009 so far). Not Sosa-esque, but it IS quite a jump. Even in the minors in his banner year he only popped 11 in 563 PA. Perhaps he dabbled in the use, got his contract, and quit them.
If that’s the case, uh oh.
I’m hoping it’s just his horrible, ridiculous swing.
by Pander on Sep 13, 2009 6:19 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He just needs to remake his swing.
The Sox don’t need ridiculous numbers from him. I’d settle for a 800 ops and outstanding defense.

"Oh well back to work"
by Tdogg on Sep 13, 2009 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes. .750 is a bit more reasonable.
and he’d probably be worth his contract around that level.
by larry on Sep 13, 2009 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hope we see .800 too
But after seeing replacement level (or less?) output from CF for the last 3.5 years, if he was just worth his contract, I’d be happy

Rios forgetting how to swing vs PED use
Neither good. Hope for #1 I guess. Can Sox fix a bad swing? Haven’t seen evidence of that. Given how prevalent PED use was, worried that is a possible explanation for his declining offensive numbers. Could be in real trouble on that front. Right now he’s making Juan Uribe look like an offensive juggernaut.
by 19172005 on Sep 13, 2009 8:59 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, PED's....Wait, when did they ban them?
Seems pretty illogical considering that it was 2005 when the ban started and after this is when he started putting up good numbers but good try. Keep swingin’ kid.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he develops himself into a decent second / third pitcher. Still, I’m glad we pulled off the Peavy deal.

We're Stuck With Him......deal with it!
This year is history.
Start 2010 by letting Dye and Dotel walk. Trade Pena, Linebrink, Fields, Wise, and Castro for whatever you can get which probably won’t be much. Trade Jenks for some bullpen help and turn over the closer role to Thornton. Promote Hudson, Nunez, and Flowers. I’d also let Cox go. He cost us too many runs this year with his poor judgement. Resign Pods 1yr, move Q to right, and look to bolster bullpen in off season through FA or trade. Rios will improve. Can’t get any worse.
