Look at this Quality Start throwing Mystery Father

No time for a proper recap... After greeting General Soreness with an extended BP session and allowing 3 runs in the second, Freddy Garcia settled down to throw his 5th consecutive quality start. Oh, and Jake Peavy is starting FOR THE WHITE SOX on Saturday. Can the playoffs be far behind? I think not.

Hawk is channeling Monte Moore...

Moore was at times accused during Finley’s ownership tenure of being Finley’s "mole," whose job it was to spy on the players and report back to Finley. In particular, Moore was accused of reporting to Finley an incident which took place on the team’s airline flight from Boston to Kansas City in August, 1967, in which several players allegedly were drunk and making "suggestive" remarks to flight attendants. Manager Alvin Dark and star player Ken Harrelson were fired by Finley as a result. Moore consistently denied all such accusations and through the years most have assumed the accusations were without merit.

I enjoyed this

Give Williams this: He got the Rockies to give him a Triple-A pitcher for the fast-fading Jose Contreras.

You know who that AAA pitcher is? 24 year-old Brandon Hynick, who had a 3:1 K/BB ratio at AA last year and who just threw a 7-inning perfect game at AAA. Jose Contreras was a 131 year-old pitcher making $10m a year, sporting a 5.42 ERA. If Kenny Williams had gotten the Rockies to give him a 50-count box of legal-sized envelopes for Jose Contreras, he could have rightly demanded and been given a 4-year extension. (And yes, I know Contreras pitched well in his debut for the Rockies. But it’s the NL West, for God’s sake. There are Babe Ruth League pitchers who can shut down the teams in the NL West.)

Would you be inclined to bring him back next year?

Assuming a reasonable price? I’m not convinced, but I’m predisposed to disliking him.

From the link:

All told, Garcia rates as a slightly below-average starting pitcher. However, when you can get him for nothing on the waiver wire, he becomes quite the asset. Start him with confidence. This reclamation project could end up acing his test, or at least passing.

meh. Yes and no. For most of us, raised to steer clear of that word, it is seemingly "offensive" regardless.

But today’s version of that word is far from the one our parents used or knew and warned us of.

By using it themselves and making it their own and calling one another by it casually, black people have eliminated its insulting connotations and removed the hateful power it once held. It’s become a harmless word, in a way.

having someone (in this instance our President) call you a J/A because you

pulled a J/A stunt is totally acceptable in book.

Having a black man call another black man a “N” is totally acceptable in my book if deemed as a form of communication. Same thing with a white man calling another white man a honkie.

When you start mixing races and using these words as derogatory comments…well that doesn’t fly IMO.

if people - white, orange, yellow, purple or black - think a word should not be used

you can’t play the game of “it’s okay for me to use it but not you.” it’s not going to disappear that way. since i’m unaware of the vast majority of black people thinking it should be a term that is regularly used, it is thus not appropriate for them or anyone else to continue to perpetuate its usage.

by larry on Sep 16, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd agree

Lastly, I am okay with B.O. calling out Kanye as a J/A…but I am just throwing out an assumption here. What if that was Bush calling out Kanye???

"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."

by BobbySouthSide on Sep 16, 2009 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, you can play that game. People do play that game. But that's their decision, no? You and I don't use it. Most white people don't use it anymore. So if they want to continue its existence, so be it.

It’s their word to perpetuate or ignore.

I personally think it sounds ignorant for them to call one another such a word (and I’d bet that most black people also hate what its become), but my point was that it has taken on an entirely different life in the past couple decades – because of how black people in particular have decided to use it.

White people are so suddenly concerned about protecting feelings of other races who we have raped up the ass for centuries… words just don’t really go away ever…especially one like that, that holds so much historical weight. So why not do what black people have done – shift its power by changing the way it’s most commonly used?

by homesickalien on Sep 16, 2009 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i find your underlying point - and the point that many people try to argue - that it's power is somehow "changed" by them using it

to be patently ridiculous. like i said, let me know how it works out when you call a black person by that name. their response isn’t going to be suggestive of the power of the word being changed.

by larry on Sep 16, 2009 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think what she is trying to confey that the word is dictated

differently depending on the source of where it is coming from. This I totally agree with.

Compare you saying just the word to a black man and a black man saying the word to another black man. In most instances you would be the one (and only one) probably getting into a physical altercation.

The meanings of words and their power do change. Look at all the PC words to be used in describing certain races over the years…

"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."

by BobbySouthSide on Sep 16, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like I said before, I don't use it and am not naive enough to suppose that black people would like for just anyone to use it.

It’s a bit of a double-standard, but I acknowledge that it exists and therefore, accept that I am white and should not use it personally.

by homesickalien on Sep 16, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

"So why not do what black people have done – shift its power by changing the way it’s most commonly used?"

Before I can even be misunderstood… again, I am not suggesting that it’s great that we or anybody use it.

by homesickalien on Sep 16, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps I should chime in here

If the word went away forever. That would be fine by me. At the same time I understand its use and always laugh when a white person says its unacceptable for anyone to say it. Was watching B. Gumbel on HBO Sports last night.

Whoever the lesbian is (Mary C?) did a piece on the dearth of black swimmers in inner cities and the history of how it happened (as recently as the ’70’s, pools would’ve rather closed down than integrate).

Gumbel piped in that he remembered how it was as a boy in Louisiana who would be seen as “dirtying” the pool just because of his race. MC blanched a bit. The pain is not so far away, I can imagine.

Thanks for your perspective. NOW GET ME MY PP, B! ;)

My acknowledging that the usage of it has evolved into something else, something less harmful than its original use, at the very mouths of the people who were once the victims of the word, is not stupid. It’s an observation.

This word can still be very powerful and harmful when used with hate behind it.

Yes.

However, it is entirely appropriate for Native Americans to hear/see “Indians”, “Redskins”, “Seminoles”, etc.

Double standards. The NA’s need to get a better lobby. And look scarier.

They've profitted kindly from their situation

And NA’s are much less numerous, so cultural assimilation/acceptance isn’t so ineffective. Trusty Small Pox making lives easier in the future, a gift from the gods. PC era is so far from logical that trying to justify it or argue over it is absurd. And of course, ignoring the situation entirely is not at all harmful to the white community at least. Huzzah.

Random question

Since there is a mutual option on Jermaine Dye – is there anyway the Sox will get compensation if he leaves? I’ve heard people mention how Dye will be a type A FA, but does that even matter given there is a mutual option?

If the Sox enforce the option, he declines – then do they receive draft picks?

Because we can't score a guy from third with less than 2 out.

Or get hits with men in scoring position, or have the bullpen come in and shut the opposition down with regularity. Plus this might be the worst defensive team I’ve ever seen.

All that and we are 5.5 games back with a slight chance for the playoffs. The AL Central sucks. All it would have taken for the Sox to win the division this year was a three week hot streak.

by jimmyjr on Sep 16, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

funny true story (apologize in advance for being off baseball subject)

Earlier this year my then 5 year old comes to me after her k (12 kids 8 white, 2 black, 2 ????) class and says, “daddy today we learned about a time when the white people were not very nice to black people. The black people worked and the white people didn’t even pay them!”

What the f*ck am I suppose to say that? lol.

Peavy, Buehrle, Floyd and Danks…the Sox win the rest of their games and we’re golden. AND we rest “Big Game Freddie” for the playoffs.
