Is Angel Hernandez the Worst MLB Umpire?
Or does he merely detest the White Sox?
He messed up two calls at first base where our pitchers beat the Mariner base runner to the bag, one that was close and one that was blatantly wrong.
Bobby Jenks was there first, it was obvious, Ichiro was out. Octavio Dotel also beat a runner to the bag two innings earlier.. Neither of these bad calls cost us tonight, but they certainly made things tighter, the game for one and other things like Hawk's sphincter.
Another incident this season came on June 12th, with the White Sox visiting Milwaukee for some inter-league action. Scott Podsednik stole second base, popped up, was pushed off the bag by the tag and called out. This was so traumatic for Pods he completely forgot how to run the bases the rest of the season.
According to BuehrleMan on Aug 29, 2008 6:31 PM CDT on Game #134: WhiteSox (76-57) @ RedSox (77-56) Angel Hernandez had the strike zone jumping around on him.
I seem to also recall the faintest memory of a pure hatred for this man in 2008, drunkenly making a photochop of him hanging from a noose, but I cant remember the particulars and the picture was so bad I never published it (which you know is really bad if you've seen any of my other photo-shops I have shown here).
For some reason a search didnt turn anything up, but there had to be an incident that I am forgetting because I know that I hate this man, I think it is because of 2008, yet I dont know why. I want to say it was against the Twins but Im not sure. Could I have been so enraged I have completely blocked this memory all together? Was it the booze? Yes, probably the booze. However, I hate this man for a reason, and he further backed up my belief that he hates the White Sox today. Hopefully someone else also hates this guy and can remind me what started it all.
Screw you Angel Hernandez. How you got to work the all-star game and two World Series' I will never know.

Think of it as a "FIAL" in german
“You have not got it” I of course could be off base, but I stole the phrase from a ww II novel about a sniper, who discovers he missed the person he was trying to shoot, and the german speaking GI joe was busting his chops… essentially “You missed”…

Dotel did not beat his man to the bag.
It was a tie.
Quit lobbying for the front page, newbie editor. Fer Chrissakes.

I don't see his name at the bottom of the page (with the other editors).

I think the correct term is author since I have front page power, but I can hide stuff too.
Dont sweat it though, cheat was just angling for a Jim Beam club ticket.
and if I was lobbying for the front page it would’ve been the only poll option.

Ya Know...
The big issue is not with Angel Hernandez…it is with Jenks looking like he went through labor after running to first base and actually having to throw more than 10 pitches in an inning

Don't you have some kids to learn or something?

Congratulations
Ichiro bunted Bobby’s 11th pitch of that inning. That should have been the end of the inning. I would say any umpire calling a runner safe because the pitcher covering had to “labor” over to first, has an issue. What’s more, I would also say most pitchers in the league would have to make a significant effort to beat Ichiro to first.

for three years now my contributions to this site have been little more than posting pictures, rec’ing things that made me laugh out loud, and leading the standing ovation we gave Fields at the meet up for executing a sacrifice bunt.
I finally do something that makes sense and you’re telling me it falls on deaf ears?

Ok...
but he was called safe…and instead of blaming a bad call…which is part of the game…Jenks still has to get the next hitter…not walk Franklin Gutierrez and bring the tying run to the plate. The fact is Jenks is clearly out-of-shape, lost his fastball, and he blew 5 saves this season ( 2 against Detroit…we are 5 1/2 back…If he is having problems closing against the Mariners, how much of this from Jenks are you willing to take?
by EArcella19 on Sep 16, 2009 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions
Nobody is arguing that.
You’re stating that Jenks is not a good pitcher because it takes him more than ten pitches to get three outs. I’m saying it took him eleven last night. He did everything right in that sequence.
You’re stating that Jenks being out of shape has somehow cost the team 5 saves this season with 2 coming against the Tigers. I’m saying that 1.) Jenks has been “out of shape” since the day he was called up in 05 and has been one of the most effective closers in that span of time. and 2.) we still won one of those games against Detroit (as evidenced by the win he was awarded for said game) Further, you’re using a statistic like saves to measure a pitcher’s worth. Not gonna get you far in an argument round these parts partner.
THANK YOU NATE SILVER, TECHNOLOGY IS THE TOPS
Thus, the phrase translates as “Don’t waste something valuable by giving it to someone who doesn’t/can’t appreciate it.” This can apply to words/thoughts/wisdom as well as physical objects, and the expression is frequently used in a condescending fashion.

so..
is his 3.44 ERA a good measure or his 85.3% Save Percentage…So if we don’t measure Jenks worth by saves…then what do we measure his worth by?? Kidney Stones? Length of Beard?
by EArcella19 on Sep 16, 2009 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions
do you really use era to judge a pitcher's worth?

I started to ask this very question, then just decided to take Chi's advice.
Don’t listen to U-God EArcella, clearly Bobby’s beard slowed him down last night and is the reason he can’t throw 114 mph anymore.
THANK YOU NATE SILVER, TECHNOLOGY IS THE TOPS
I have me an idea!
What if Bobby got his velocity back up, threw the ball really hard, and then just rode it to first base?
This way he would unquestionably beat the runner to first every time!
THANK YOU NATE SILVER, TECHNOLOGY IS THE TOPS
thats not the point dip shit…the point is he walked the next batter and brought the tying run to the plate…it took him 17 pitches to get one out…umpires blow calls…it happens
by EArcella19 on Sep 16, 2009 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions
Closers walk batters sometimes too. It happens.
The fact of the matter is he did his job and got out of the inning despite a blown call that should have ended the game. Gutierrez battled his ass off and worked Jenks for a walk similar to AJ battling his ass off in the 7th inning to get a big hit. Sometimes, you tip your cap to the other guy and move on, which is what Bobby did in retiring the next batter.
you can't
compare AJ and Franklin Gutierrez…AJ is hitting 30 ponits higher and better OBP…and he battled with Lopez…if you think Jenks looked good…you are crazy…even after future hall of famer Mike Carp tattooed a ball to center field

I know it is difficult but read your post…Gutierrez battled his ass off and worked Jenks for a walk similar to AJ

I compared the situation, you compared the players.
I don’t know why we are arguing this point anyway. According to you- “I mean Jenks has one job…get saves and if you dont measure his worth from saves then how do you do it?”
does this mean its ok for Jenks to be bad in non-save situations?
"And when I called him, and asked him to stand up for me, I know I shocked the shit out of him" - Michael Jordan, on choosing David Thompson as his Hall of Fame sponsor.
hmmm...
no it isn’t…but the man is a closer…that is his job…if he is bad in non-save situations then it is only a problem if it effects the team…jenks job is hold the score at what it is because he does come in when the game is tied late (like he did in Oakland and lost). So I mean his job is to not blow games…

experts...
Yes you guys are…I don’t know how you guys measure worth…but I do know you idiots need a graph to show you that Josh Fields sucks…I mean Jenks has one job…get saves and if you dont measure his worth from saves then how do you do it? I think it is people like you who never played the game and need to analyze every meaningless category of the game when the answers are black and white…If maybe you played the game and watch a game you can see pitchers miss spots and get the piss hit out of them…you dont need to measure things by graphs comparing Mike Cameron and Josh Fields

I cant believe you measure
players by how black and white they are . . . I think we are way past that as a game . . . now, you have to at least include brown too, Latin America plays a prominent role in today’s game.
Would you please put some pants on? I feel weird having to ask you twice.
Lest you forget the yellow-ish.

The Red Sox clogged the bases and left more guys stranded last season than anyone else.
So its kind of good to clog.
