Gavin Floyd Tweaks Hip, White Sox Still Seeking Level

I don't know how Gavin Floyd even made it through three innings. I mean I know he was trying to gut through a minor (?) injury, but what's the point? And where was AJ, or Ozzie or Herm? It was clear to me (even in my inebriated state) that he was uncomfortable on the mound in the first, though it did become less pronounced as the game wore on. I initially diagnosed it as a problem with his landing spot, but within a couple pitches his actions seemed to indicate a physical problem. The Sox finally pulled him after 3 innings, by which point I had convinced myself I was seeing things and reached for another beer.

Gordon Beckham broke up the shutout and put a bow on this turd with a homerun on his birthday. Otherwise it was a thoroughly boring game.

"...a thoroughly boring game"

- and season. I can’t recall a season where every single division race was over with more than two weeks to go. The only suspense left is whether the SF Uribes can catch CO for the wild card. And other than a six week or so stretch in June/July and the Peavy/Rios acquisitions the Sox have been boring as hell too.

So was The Catch. And the walk-off the other night. And Becks’ ascention.

I'm worried about winning this division.

I just checked out the schedule for the rest of the season. It appears that we have to play a first place team 6 more times before this is over. And while we’re doing that, the Tigers get to play a team that is under .500!!

Juan Uribe, si - muy forte

OPS+ of 114, and posting a career high OBP of .331. I guess all those valuable lessons he got from Walk took a while to sink in. Usually it’s out of sight out of mind for me with former players, but this Uribe kid was sumpin else. I’m happy for him that he’s gonna squeeze at least one more year out of his career.

question

what do we all think Beckham will do average-wise the next couple seasons? he looks like he could hit .290-.300 to me.

one would hope .280+

would not surprise me if he hit .300. seems kind of prone to 1 for 20 type slumps though.

Before he took a major league at bat I thought he was a .285 hitter

He’s obviously improved on that in my eyes. We’ll probably see him around that level next year as well, but his peak is going to include multiple .300+ seasons (and I have a feeling some will be surprised by his power).

by The Cheat on Sep 17, 2009 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

well he's 22 and almost at .200 ISO

it seems like his 25-29 peak should be pretty decent, power-wise.

I was bored to tears watching this game. I kept score on a crappy homemade scorecard while I drank this season away at a bar by myself last night.

(drank away = 2 pints in 6.5 innings…which is when I left in disgust….at the very sight of Linebrink).

so with race relations and the N word covered yesterday

can we get into urban fashion today?

the saggy pants seem to be on an unprecendented run. Atleast a dozen years, probably closer to 15 this has been en vogue. I cant think of any other trend with that kind of staying power. One strap over-alls, cross colour gear, black rope and african medallions instead of gold chains cant hold a candle to this phenomenon. Maybe the afro had more longevity, it was before my time so I cant be sure, but even Jerry curl didnt stay cool for this long.

Fine 4 game question?

Okay geniuses or shall I say math teachers.

Once again the Sox appear to have an opportunity to play themselves into an interesting week or so.

It occured to me again if this futile crew could put together a 4 game winning streak/ paired with Det-Minn playing each other over the weekend, the team could find itself 4 games out on Monday.

Why do I torture myself?

With the current win percentage% or home win% percentage, what are the chances of 4 wins in a row?

Do you put KC’s record vs the Sox in the equation?

Im kidding on most of this of course but would like to know a rough mathematical expectation.

Peavy will have to be sharp.

Floyds not pitching so theres that.

The Royals have played the Sox tough this season.

The Sox have the most errors in baseball.

Totally un-mathy guess: 5% chance

The Twins or the Sox (to a lesser extent) still control their destiny. Normally with so little games left and those elimination numbers it really is flat out impossible. Not here though with so many direct games between the 3. 7 Minn/Detroit games- 6 Sox/Tigers game what cruel fun!

really wasn't being serious about it

i would say honestly use win. %, so the sox chance of winning tonight = .493/(.493 + .514) = .490

sox chance of winning each game against the royals = .493 / (.493 + .404) = .550

their chance of winning all 4 = .490 * .550^3 = .091.

9% without taking into account pitching matchups and injuries and all that good stuff that does affect outcomes

not sure tailgater was denying that.

no matter how justified, i’d imagine being “responsible” for the deaths of hundreds of thousands is going to stick with you. sending soldiers to their death and bombing civilians to their death ain’t easy.

As exemplified by this exchange from "The American President"
President Andrew Shepherd: What I did tonight was not about political gain.

Leon Kodak: Yes sir. But it can be, sir. What you did tonight was very presidential.

President Andrew Shepherd: Leon, somewhere in Libya right now, a janitor’s working the night shift at Libyan Intelligence headquarters. He’s going about doing his job… because he has no idea, in about an hour he’s going to die in a massive explosion. He’s just going about his job, because he has no idea that about an hour ago I gave an order to have him killed. You’ve just seen me do the least presidential thing I do.

damn militants
Randal: A construction job of that magnitude would require a helluva lot more manpower than the Imperial army had to offer. I’ll bet there were independent contractors working on that thing: plumbers, aluminum siders, roofers.
Dante: Not just Imperials, is what you’re getting at.
Randal: Exactly. In order to get it built quickly and quietly they’d hire anybody who could do the job. Do you think the average storm trooper knows how to install a toilet main? All they know is killing and white uniforms.
Dante: All right, so even if independent contractors are working on the Death Star, why are you uneasy with its destruction?
Randal: All those innocent contractors hired to do a job were killed- casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. (notices Dante’s confusion) All right, look-you’re a roofer, and some juicy government contract comes your way; you got the wife and kids and the two-story in suburbia-this is a government contract, which means all sorts of benefits. All of a sudden these left-wing militants blast you with lasers and wipe out everyone within a three-mile radius. You didn’t ask for that. You have no personal politics. You’re just trying to scrape out a living.

These events have me frightened and on the verge of evacuating my bowels.

by thatshortkid on Sep 17, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

very true
About 105,000 Japanese lost their lives in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. While this is a high number, the number who died in the American bombing raids on the six largest Japanese cities is far greater, about 250,000. Consequently, such a large number of deaths is by no means unprecedented. An invasion of Japan would possibly have cost between 250,000 and three million Japanese and American lives and ended the war four months later, at the very earliest. It may be concluded that no more people died in the atomic bombings than would have in an invasion of Kyushu, and that said bombings did have the effect of ending the war more quickly. Truman’s motives, therefore, cannot be called into question in light of the results of his decision. At least in this case, the end justifies the means.

oo ooo oooooribe!

Juan Uribe, 2B/3B/SS, SF (Yahoo: 19 percent owned; ESPN: 15 percent)

I don’t know how long he can keep up the hot streak and I don’t really trust him any further than I can shot put his rather bulbous head, but there appears to still be enough of Uribe’s torrid pace to go around. I added him in a mixed league this week and have not been disappointed. In his last nine games, the Giants’ third baseman has hit .424 (14-for-33) with three homers and 11 RBI, and he has five homers and 14 RBI this month. Uribe obviously isn’t this good, but it doesn’t take a stellar player to get absurdly hot, and there’s no reason not to take advantage for as long as you possibly can.
