Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

A theory of how the Sox might focus on their offseason this year

Even though this year isn't mathematically over, after tonight's game it's safe to say that it's time to start talking offseason.  I've been focusing my attention to that very exact thing for the past week, trying to figure out which path the Sox will take for next season.  I came up with a theory that will still keep me interested in the season and possibly might factor in the decision making for what they plan on doing in certain situations.

I was checking the standing yesterday, just looking at the division and wild card races, and then I checked the overall standing just to see where the Sox were at for the whole major leagues and noticed that they were in 18th place meaning they have the 13th pick in the draft.  Now I'm not saying that we should just lose as many games as possibly for the rest of the year so we can get a better draft pick, the draft is just to far away for me to care, but I am focusing on where the Sox will end up in the overall standings.

If we have a top 15 pick in the draft next year, this offseason I feel we will have a better chance of getting the possible free agents people have been discussing (ie. Figgins, Abreu).  If you don't know what I'm getting at yet, it's compensation picks and how they work.  If we have a top 15 pick, the Sox can not lose our pick if they decide to go out and sign a Type A free agent.  So if you want guys like Figgins or Abreu or even a good reliever(the top ones usually our Type A; Dotel probably will be one) makes our chances of landing one maybe two more of a possibility.

I just think Kenny would be a little more hesitant to sign a guy big money and lose a mid-round pick at the same time, considering the way Kenny has been determined to try and rebuild this farm system.  Not saying he still wouldn't go out and get a guy if he really wanted them but I think he could take losing a 2nd round pick, especially since were probably going to get one for Dye, who I feel has made the decision a lot easier the way he's played second half of the season.

Just a theory I thought could come into play for maybe a decision or two and these loses might not sting as bad.

Is this idea going to effect if Kenny's guy will be here next year?

interesting thoughts on the effect of where the pick falls

but how do you see Dye bringing a pick?
Payroll level will of course be a big factor for acquisitions. According to Cot’s, Sox payroll this year was around 96M. I wonder where they will end up going into next year if ticket sales are weak.

You are aware that the Sox

would actually have to offer Dye arbitration and Dye would have to turn that down . . . and that the odds of either of those happening are about the same as the Sox making the playoffs this year.

The reason I have no respect for these players, especially Thome is this…any player you can put a shift on is useless.

by jc2313 on Sep 22, 2009 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand that

The Dye situation to me is, thanks for everything but its time to go, so whatever they do with him whether they offer him arbitration think that he will not accept it then they will get a pick or not even offer is fine.

Basically...what I'm trying to get to on the Dye situation is

if we go out and get a big free agent like Figgins were going to lose a second round and supplement most likely, with Dye being a Type B we should get a 2nd round that is of course we offer him arbitration. NOW the only thing I’m dont understand is the Sox will most likely decline his option, how does arbitration work with a declined option? Can we offer Dye a lower amount that he’ll just look elsewhere and decline. If someone knows how an option guy works let me know, is it just the same thing?

by SSpale_hose1 on Sep 22, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Arbitration works the same

way as it does for anyone else once the option is declined. Hence the Sox will not be getting picks for him or Dotel as neither will be offered arbitration for obvious reasons.

The reason I have no respect for these players, especially Thome is this…any player you can put a shift on is useless.

by jc2313 on Sep 22, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

sounds good

I was thinking it worked a little different when it came to option guys, but i really wasn’t writing this for Dye’s situation, kind of threw them in this to say the Sox could get picks back for the pick we would lose for signing a guy like Figgins. I wrote it more on the basis of there being a better possibility of getting a big free agent because we won’t be giving up a good first round pick. Just looking at how they might approach things.

free agent market

if this does happen and its looking like were gonna have a top 15 pick, i think we should go after figgins, im not the biggest fan but looking at the market, he does resolve 3 things: leadoff man, a third baseman(move beckham at 2nd), and improved defense. A 3 yr deal 24-27 mil a season.

WHAT THE FUCK DOES FIGGINS HAVE TO DO WITH DRAFT POSITION?

figgins has nothin to do with draft position

its just hes goin to be a type A guy so if were in the top 15 picks we wont lose our 1st round pick, so i was just sayin might be more likely for them to go after him more.

not going to be hard for them to lose games the way there playin

i dont want them to lose, but its might be benefical, tryin to look at it positively

no, it will not be hard for them to lose games the way they're playing, Adam.

except they play Detroit 6 times, who are playing even worse than the Sox.

Danks is going to win tomorrow in my 2nd to last game of the year, so theres that as well.

K ill give u Danks win

but with the run support he gets nothings for sure. And why does playing the tigers 6 times mean anything now, besides helping the twins, if we beat them
