I am shocked to hear that the team will be financially strapped and unable to afford a FA
The more interesting question is do they have to cut salary more? If they have to ditch Jenks and/or AJ and/or Konerko it will be tough to fill those holes. You can hope Flowers is ready to play next season I suppose but there’s no other positional help in AAA/AA
I think they have to deal a starting pitcher and/or Alexei for someone that can hit that makes the minimum. Cue the Gavin Floyd for Nolan Reimold rumors!!!
it just makes sense!
we’d have 5 starters, a first baseman with power, and hudson in the bullpen, with thorny to close it out!!
lets go dodgers
Floyd is signed to a reasonably cheap deal and coming into his own
I doubt he’s going to be sent out for Nolan Reimold
It's hard to keep up with when the Sox are financially strapped and when they're not
Maybe KW simply doesn’t want to tip his hand about which way he’s leaning come the off-season. After the two big acquistions of this season, I’ll have a hard time believing him the next time he says “you can’t trade for a dollar when you have 50 cents”.
That being said, it’s very well possible that Figgins has simply priced himself out of their desired salary range and they don’t feel like getting into a bidding war for his services. Of course saying that won’t rile up the masses like saying the Sox don’t want to spend money.

Some team is going to end up overpaying for Figgins and probably overpaying a lot.
It’s probably not going to be the White Sox.
Exactly
which is why that article shouldn’t say the Sox are financially strapped therefore Plan A is a pipedream. It should say that the Sox won’t be getting into a bidding war for Plan A’s services because another team will probably drastically overpay for him.

Jenks popped a muscle while stretching? That's a lack of desire right there.
You cannot measure how much he wanted to stay healthy, that’s something you stat-dorks will never understand.

Trade for a good hitter making the minimum? It might be hard to find another Quentin
and it did cost us a really good prospect in Chris Carter. But it is Kenny Williams…
Is Quentin a really good hitter?
Not this year. Not any year other than last year at the major league level.

Kinda hard to miss. It hurts.... It stings, really. But there it is.
Hard to know whether last year was a total fluke since he’s been a gimpy Q ever since.
I’m keeping hope alive that he really is that exclamatory Q.
After his walk last night, I said to my friend, “See, Q just stands up there and looks clueless so he’ll get the pitch way off the plate and walk in the end.”
Rrrrright.

He doesn't seem to be limping along anymore.
Albert Pujols, Mark McGwire and Carlton Fisk could all still hit when they had Planter fasigfiaivis or whatever it is….. I think its more than just injury. If any injury is harming him it is probably the broken wrist he received while being a douchebag last season.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Pujols is not human, McGwire is enhanced,
…And Carlton Fisk never had as good a hitting season as Quentin, though he was a catcher so presumably he could have in a couple of years without the wear and tear. Anywho, good hitter doesn’t presume hall of famer/Barry Bonds. He has talent and had a good season even with a strange stance.
Agreed. IMO the Sox should make him full time DH next year to increase his chances of staying healthy.
Also, he has made 21 fewer plays than your average left fielder this year (according to Fielding Bible). Horrid.
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
Nah - he's at his lowest value - time to trade him
"ass hole thi is the same line up whit leftys you idiot"
This bullpen is going to be awful next year
As frustrating as Dotel has been at times this year, he has also been extremely reliable for stretches and as scary as it sounds, I think the Sox will miss him. ANd he’ll be replaced with Nunez? Pena??
If Dotel and Jenks aren’t on this team next year… can the internal options be counted on with the leftovers of Linebrink, Carrasco, Pena, etc?
Scary proposition.
I cannot answer any more questions for you today. I has wickeds gas from drink too manys redbull.
my guess is one of garcia and hudson will be in the pen
obviously with the other in the 5th starter spot. we’ve also got a few guys in the minors that could be bullpen help
lets go dodgers
Bullpens are hard to predict
What you were excited about the 05’ one? Someone said it best (cheat, jim or larry), the Sox seem to get in the most trouble when they “feel” like they have to do something in the bullpen.
"Oh well back to work"
Agreed. Only 6 guys have had two top 10 FIPs over the last three years:
Bell, Papelbon, Rivera, Broxton, Nathan and Easy Heat. IMO, that makes it crystal clear why Thornton should be our closer in 2010.
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
i think that sort of makes it clear that he should actually be used in high leverage situations instead of entering in the ninth inning with no one on base.
my point was that the guy is likely capable of closing games as well as the others on the list.
that said, Jenks’ has a near identical (actually a touch higher) gmLI (leverage index when entering a game) to Easy’s. that suggests Ozzie has been using both in equally leveraged situations.
2009: Not with a bang but a whimper.
I would be interested in comparing how BJ does when coming in
with no one on vs. Thorny in the same situation. And how each of them do in the 2nd inning of relief.
I’m still not convinced Thorny can be labeled “closer” and handle it.

Things don't look good.
Unless we get some talent like Rick Vaughn from the California Penal League… I pretty much think we are going to suck for the next couple years. They already said there will be no changes in the infield, the outfield is full of question marks, Pods is being discussed as a DH, there isn’t any hitters in the minors that will help us, the bullpen blows donkeys…. the starters are going to have to go 9 every fucking game next year. bring on 2011. AHHHH.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Its only Pena and Linebrink that are bad
Most of the others are above average/good. Just toss Thornton out there for 324 innings and we’ll be fine.
We should be much better going into 2010 than we were going into 2009.
If healthy, we should have one of the best starting rotations in the AL. We will have a real center fielder and a better defensive outfield just with the subtraction of Dye. Our infield defense has improved steadily since the beginning of the year and should actually be average to above average next year. We will have a full year of Beckham and Rios and a healthy Q? We do have a couple of areas that need improvement such as DH and the outfield replacement for Dye. I don’t understand why you are so concerned about the bullpen, we haven’t lost anyone yet and may not. Our bullpen was not our biggest problem this year, in fact it was pretty good when compared to AL bullpens.
there's nothing like being rubbed ----by pierzynskirules
2 pitchers pitched well out of the bullpen
Thornton and DJ. Jenks and Dotel were ok… the rest were bad news. I suppose you could expect Thornton to repeat… not DJ. I would think that Jenks will be moved and Octavio won’t be brought back. You will indeed get more linebrink and pena which is pretty scary.
How can you count on Q and Rios after seeing this pathetic effort? I think Dye is more likely to have a good season than either of those 2. They are already crying poor so you won’t see any free agent pickups. The infield defense will remain as is. The power that Thome and Dye brought is gone and nobody is here to replace it.
I am very very concerned right now. Can that change? I suppose…. but it looks bleak. They are going to count on a starting staff and a piss poor division again. It didn’t work this year and it won’t work next.
Kenwo4life=ratings
I hear what you're saying but
I’ll still take Rios and Beckham over Wise/Anderson and Fields starting the year for us. We’ve seen how good Q can be when healthy and how bad he can be when hurt. I’ll take my chances with a healthy Quentin any day. I’ll also take Peavy/Garcia/Hudson over Count/Colon/Richard too.
We’ll just have to wait and see what KW wants to do in the off-season but I don’t think it’s as bad as you’re making it out to be. Who scares you in this division?
there's nothing like being rubbed ----by pierzynskirules
nobody scares me in the divsion
but thats still a piss poor excuse to put your hopes on winning the division because everyone else sucks. This could easily be an era where the sox make the playoffs most every year… you don’t get those opportunities often… and they pissed away 2006, they sucked in 2007, they almost pissed away 2005 and 2008 and now they pissed away 2009.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Peavy, Beuhrle, Floyd, Danks.
We’ll be fine. Not hard to find a DH, Beckham’s a year older, Rios should level out, I don’t see why we shouldn’t feel good about 2010.
by Grinder in Training on Sep 23, 2009 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Because the offense, defense, and bullpen all look horrible for 2010?
Right now the leading candidate to DH is Pods. The open OF slot right now is between Wise and Kotsay. And the numbers say Rios and Q are actually pretty sucky hitters. They might be a little better next season, but there’s no reason to expect either to repeat a performance from 2 years ago at this point.
To compete next season, at a minimum the Sox need to find two above average bats and one above average reliever. They don’t have those guys in the organization right now, so we’ll have to see if KW makes a trade….

Bleak?
Dude you need some drugs. You are making assumptions on Rios for what 120 abs? In all that is wrong with Q the dude still has a .224 BABIP this year.
The rotation is top notch, which helps any bullpen.
They have some young improving players. There are holes to fill sure, as with any team. Actually LESS than most teams. This year’s team subtracted Swisher and Javy. Hmmm. And still should have won it (or come closer).
If you can’t be excited for the next 2-3 years, I really don’t know what to tell you.
"Oh well back to work"
They have some young improving players?
Who? Besides Beckham who is a dandy, i don’t see this. Chris Getz may be a tad better, but I think what you see is basically what you get out of him. you are counting on an outfield of Pods, Quentin and Rios….. I was all for Rios coming. I was a huge fan….but this guy looks absolutely TERRIBLE. The bullpen is in shambles because of a manager who quite frankly doesn’t know what in the hell he is doing…. and everyone keeps talking about how great the starters are- none of them have had a great year. Danks and Floyd were better last year. Buehrle still can’t put two solid halfs together.
The minor leagues aren’t filled with future stars like everyone thinks it is. The organization won’t spend any money. We don’t have any power hitters left on the team. Our fast guy is in his mid 30s and in my opinion sucks. Our catcher catches 2 million innings a year.
I hope I’m wrong… and I have stated things might change… but from where I sit right now, I think the organization is a mess.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Dude, you may need the rest of the season off.
The team is in great shape going fwd. Whether you think they had good years or not, the Starting rotation is as good as any in the game…that alone will keep us in the mix.
How are they in great shape?
their offense fucking blows and they won’t spend money to improve it. So unless they deal one of their starters it isn’t going to be better. If they deal a starter it is taking away from the strength of the club.
Lord forgive me for saying this….. but is Don Cooper really the genius we think he is? It seems to me that David Aardsma, Mike Macdougal and even our boy Nick Magic have been much better without him.

so I give him a free pass on a lot of things like Pods….actually I give him a free pass on most things, except Rush Limbaugh.

I think my sister brainwashed him on Pods
Pods took over for BA in my sister’s eyes…it is quite irrational. She pulled the wool over my dads eyes about Pods just like every stinkin lie she told about me to him when we were growing up!

Im not counting on anything because the roster isn't finished
You do realize this things can be quantified and not by just your gut?
I missed the thread where everyone felt like the minors were filled with future stars.
You were a huge fan of Rios but now after his small sample you want to throw out the rest of his numbers?

I found a version of it (looks like gus recorded it on his TV) on youtube under the name "Bacon Love." Can't find it now, however.
But that vid showed but a small portion of it. I’m inclined to record it in full from my screen and post my own full version.
Maybe soon…

Yeah, I think what made Hawk laugh the hardest, was AJ patting Beckham on the back, as Hawk describes between laughter tears, "burping him."
As the are going away to commercial and Hawk is still giggling, he says “AJ burping…” again.
AJ is so damn funny – for all of us who love his ‘asshole antics’, this is even more priceless footage.

This is the best I can do with my current resources...a frame-by-frame. During the slow-mo replay, Hawk giggling and giddily says, "POW!" the moment he gets hit and flies backwards.

Hawk’s laughter is really the best part about the vid, so I’ll try to see what I can do recording and posting that soon. :)

I’ve got DirecTV but considering Comcast because it would be cheaper and it has on demand programming.
On the Sox games they are advertising channel 999 for on-demand Sox programming. Anyone have it? What is it? Old games? Highlights?

More OT - for the lawyers out there
When Milton Bradley allegedly “refused” to pinch hit, why wouldn’t it be considered a breach of contract? Couldn’t they take action against him? Does the suspension include any suspension of pay?
He’s probably thrilled he was suspended…now he doesn’t have to show up. If I were the Cubs front office, I’d make him come back and sit his ass on the bench the rest of the year…why give him a free pass?

I'd make him play right field.
Then rotate him each inning to center and left at all home games. Towards the end of the game I would pull him in the middle of an inning. Let all of the fans show their appreciation.

Lineup
Nix 4, Beckham 5, AJ 2, PK 3, Ramirez 6, JD 9, Q 7, Rios 8, Flowers DH. Buehrle pitching.
what took ozzie so long?
if flowers is going to be up and we don’t have a DH, why the hell aren’t we getting him ABs?

So season ticket ppl, how are those playoff deposits looking?
How does that work for the WSox? You get a refund or do they credit 2010 tickets or you get a choice?
Just started thinking about this b/c my pre-sale for Yankees playoff tickets is on Friday. I get 2 tickets to one game of each series.
no refund...they credit 2010.
I didn’t pay my deposit, as I knew this worthless group of chaps would fold at the first sign of fear. Not sure how that effects me for 2010, but I’m thinking they’ll still want my business.
