Around SBN: Jim Irsay: We Can Make It Work With Peyton Manning

De Luca: At this point, all White Sox fans care about is next season. The rotation will be set, and it will be a strong point. The infield also is set. The outfield remains a puzzle because of the impending exit of right fielder Jermaine Dye. The bullpen is a mess, with closer Bobby Jenks having delivered his last pitch for the Sox.

I don't think it's a given that Jenks is gone.

Unless he has arm problems we don’t know about. One thing that makes me suspicious is his low use of his curve this year. If the club knows there is a health issue they won’t bring him back for the kind of money he makes. If he’s gone, I wouldn’t move Thornton to the closer’s spot unless we got a proven setup man and preferably left handed. Oz has the flexibility to pitch him in the 7th or 8th of tight games depending on the matchups with left handers.
If Bobby goes, maybe Dotel is brought back? He’s a possible closer. I wasn’t totally serious about Hudson closing but it is possible if he proves to have the best 2 pitches of the remaining relievers. Jenks did it and so did Papelbon, both with success.
Hudson will be more valuable as a starter but only if and after he develops his slider and curve.

why not decline the arb

let him test the FA market and when he finds out he isn’t getting anywhere near $8-10M a season, sign him to a one year $3-5M deal? If he does sign somewhere else, so be it.

I only suggest this if we can’t make a deal for something of value for the bullpen.

Keep DJ and Thornton and throw a match on the rest of the garbage in the pen and start from scratch. None of them are worth a shit.

by abat on Sep 24, 2009 12:23 PM CDT reply actions

How about this?

Start 2010 by letting Dye and Dotel walk. Trade Pena, Linebrink, Fields, Wise, and Castro for whatever you can get which probably won’t be much. Trade Jenks for some bullpen help and turn over the closer role to Thornton. Promote Hudson, Nunez, and Flowers. I’d also let Cox go. He cost us too many runs this year with his poor judgement. Resign Pods 1yr, move Q to right, and look to bolster bullpen in off season through FA or trade. Rios will improve. Can’t get any worse.

Pods at DH

Pods in LF or DH with Q in RF his natural position. Rios should stay in CF period. This is the best OF defense unless you move Pods to full time DH and sign Figgins which I don’t see happening. As far as Pena goes, if you’re willing to give him a longer leash might as well extend one to Linebrink and bring him back too.

they were last in 2008, too.

it ain’t bad luck that’s the primary cause.

So FNS' bad BABIP in 2008

was an aberration/bad luck but our bad team BABIP is not?

We’re a pack of a-holes. And my tradition of contributing absolutely nothing to this site... continues.

right.

flyball teams usually will have a low BABIP. notice another team that is ranked poorly in each of the past two seasons (phillies). both clubs are homer-happy types. as discussed above, line drive is generally the type of contact which will translate into a higher BABIP. the white sox have continued to hit flyballs at about their usual rate. the primary difference between this year and last year is a higher groundball rate and flyballs not leaving the park (which, of course, wouldn’t appear in BABIP because of the IP part).

OK, I understand.

So do you think phasing JD/Thome out and a full season of Getz/Becks (and more Pods, perhaps) might bring up our BABIP? (I suppose it will depend upon who DH’s and who plays RF to replace them, but whatthehell.)

thome has a high babip, both career and this season. he wasn't the problem.

or, at least, his babip is about league average and certainly higher than the white sox’ overall average. dye isn’t a huge problem, either, though perhaps going forward that’s not the case.

at any rate, i don’t care much about babip. as my post above illustrates, it’s not particularly indicative of team success, either overall or offensively.

Could Heath Bell be a possibility for the bullpen ?

I was in S.D. in August and the local talk then was that Bell and Gonzalez are sure to be dealt this winter for more kids. Would the Sox have enough to offer?

he is a fucking monster.
