The Road Warrior
One of the few positive things Sox fans will take away from the 2009 season is the meteoric rise of Gordon Beckham. He was anointed 'the Savior' and as side-kick to the mighty Q! they were going to take us all back to the promised land. We watched the rookie get a full-time job on the big league club almost a year to the day after he was drafted. We watched him rake clutch hits, we saw more power than we expected, we observed rapid improvement at the hot corner and can feel good about his campaign and his future. Those errors are going to be put-outs in 2010. All of 'em. Why not.
I wanted to look at some of the specifics of his season and break down the numbers a little bit. At the game on Tuesday, I happened to look up and see his average was down into the .260s when I thought it was still up around .275. What happened? I knew the club accidentally the whole thing, but Bacon's slide went under my radar.
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS June 23 75 11 20 3 0 2 13 9 13 1 3 .267 .353 .387 .740 July 27 97 12 32 10 0 3 18 9 14 3 1 .330 .382 .526 .908 August 28 112 17 25 10 0 3 18 12 24 2 0 .223 .313 .393 .705 September 17 66 12 16 2 1 5 7 6 10 1 0 .242 .315 .530 .845
Gordo's average was at .316 on August 4th- then it slowly rolled off the table. I'm on record as a Pods hater and I cited one good month that masked everything else early this season. I know its not all about the average, and I like those BB:K ratios by Beckham, but one could probably make the same argument here. If that one was a dumb-ass.
Here is the most shocking split stat:
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Home 47 165 19 36 11 1 3 21 15 31 1 2 .218 .294 .352 .646 Away 48 185 33 57 14 0 10 35 21 30 6 2 .308 .383 .546 .929
So yeah, I would have guessed he was better than this at home, and with just three games left here its not going to get that much better. Im not going to try and guess why things shook out this way. On second thought I will, because the possibilities are endless and therefore un-possible to formulate. Who knows if it was the added pressure of being called 'savior', or simply the fact that last call in Chicago is about 3 hours later than the bars in Athens were. Maybe it was all the new tail he was getting after B.A. was shipped out of town(link proves anyone can blog). Perhaps its our fault as fans, giving him a big hand and making those bitch umpires like Angel Hernandez jealous which lead to more bad balls called for strikes. I dont know, but I do know you cant quantify these intangible things so math is stupid(Thanks BCB! they're still at it btw). The cell is a hitters park and I figure this is just a freak thing. All his power and steals will normalize, and if I had to guess Id say his line next year looks more like the road splits x2 than the home ones.
On to the next line of stats, lets look at some situational hitting:
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Bases Empty 94 200 9 49 12 1 9 9 26 37 0 0 .245 .343 .450 .793 Runners On 86 150 43 44 13 0 4 47 10 24 7 4 .293 .337 .460 .797 RISP 75 88 36 26 6 0 2 38 8 13 0 1 .295 .347 .432 .778 RISP w/2 Outs 48 42 19 14 1 0 0 15 5 9 0 0 .333 .417 .357 .774 Bases Loaded 15 8 7 3 2 0 0 7 0 1 0 0 .375 .300 .625 .925
Yeah! Now that is what I'm talkin' 'bout. I especially love how SB is listed here. He didn't attempt any SB with the bases empty. Give that a minute soak in, bask in the glorious aroma of this brain fart cloud.
Thank yahoo! for that one, seriously, thanks yahoo! for these easy to copy and paste #s are all from y!
An OPS of .925 with the bases loaded is great. I dont care if its only 8 AB and if a pitcher loaded the bases against this particular team they probably suck at baseball.
Like most of my posts, I really didn't have a major point to make with all this, just thought I'd share some of the numbers I was looking at to fill the overnight recap slot of the off-day. That home average kind of blew me away and I wanted to bring it you all of your attention.

He's a rookie, dude. Lay off.
As a position player, Beckham gets an A+ for his rookie year… better than I’ve seen in a Sox uniform since Guillen in the 80’s. (I would have said Quinton but for his punching a wall and missing a crucial pennant race.)
The Sox’ problems are not Beckham. Look at the fielding errors by Ramirez, the shitty bullpen, the lack of hitting by Dye. You need a new stat like salary divided by OPS. That might shed a little light.
I didn't know Quinton was a rookie last year, or that he punched a wall. Thanks!

Nice post
Kid’s a rookie, the league scouting made an adjustment to him and cooled him off. Now the ball’s in his court, he needs to respond in kind – thank gawd we have a great hitting coach who can help him out!
I wouldn’t worry about, he’ll figure it out on his own I’m sure. One thing though – SSS and all, but it looks like he’s getting at touch of Sox-itis in Sept, saying ah fuck it we suck I’m going for the fences. Lots of K’s, low OBP, but his HR rate is way up, woohoo – chicks dig the long ball.
No animals were harmed during the making of this comment.
Maybe he's, well, tired?
Probably has never played this many games in his life, especially in as many different venues.

Rookies don’t hit a wall? It’s been an interesting year full of changes for the kid. I’d suggest he might be a little tired. Have we not said the same during Danks’ rookie year?

My guess is
sf, hbp, and I was going to say walks, but as you can see, there are none. I don’t know where to find the stats to confirm…
that's what i thought too, but the difference between 15 and 8 (accounted for by hbp and sf) seems too much

you figure since a sf or hbp would result in an rbi, he’d have 7 rbi’s from those at bats alone…but he has 7 total. something doesn’t jive here.

Finally! Scientific evidence that explains the Right Rail:
Children in the United States who were spanked had lower IQs — by 2.8 to 5 points — than those who were not spanked, Straus found.
Straus studied 806 children ages 2 to 4 and 704 ages 5 to 9. Both groups were retested four years later. How often parents spanked influenced IQ score. “The more spanking, the slower the development of the child’s mental ability,” Straus said in a news release. “But even small amounts of spanking made a difference.”
Straus and his colleagues looked at corporal punishment practices in 32 countries by surveying 17,404 university students. The analysis found a lower average IQ in nations in which spanking was more prevalent. The strongest link between corporal punishment and IQ was for those whose parents continued to use corporal punishment even when they were teenagers.

You aren't the only one
who has done that . . . my wife isn’t a huge fan, but my boys listen to me and not her, so she has learned to deal with it. Now I am play the bad guy for her.
The reason I have no respect for these players, especially Thome is this…any player you can put a shift on is useless.
As a non-parent who enjoys giving opinions on parenting based purely from a childhood-reflecting/babysitting/cultural-observing perspective :), it is healthy for children to fear their parents to a degree.
Some of the worst kids I’ve ever met had parents who didn’t believe in any real form of discipline, and rather than the kids learning lessons from bad behavior, they just learned how to manipulate their parents further. (Example – a family I babysat for used time outs as punishment…but their kids would just sob uncontrollably on the time out – freaky, unnatural, demonic sobbing – and the parent would go comfort them almost immediately….hmmm…pretty effective punishment there!)
These are coincidentally, some of the worst/most miserable parents I’ve ever met too.
So you may be a ‘bad guy’ to the kid now, but it’s not necessarily a parent’s job or beneficial to the kid’s development, to always be a good guy.
But you already know that. :)

I don’t want to know what it’s like to have parents who took out their frustrations on a kid physically.
I would never want to lay a hand on my kids in the future, and some children learn their lessons without any external force.

It isn't always about taking our your frustrations out on the kid physically.
Spanking a child is also a means of teaching that child what he did was wrong when the verbal communication obviously isn’t working.
I would say hitting a kid anywhere besides their rear side is abuse. Also, constantly using this tactic is abuse. My standpoint is you don’t hit girls either. But, it worked when I was a child and I didn’t like it at the time, but now I understand why my father did it.

I think even more effective than simple abuse/spanking, is just following through with threats. I see so many parents give their kids 50 chances and empty threats before enforcing the punishment. Who's running this show?
You threaten once and follow through if they don’t learn from a fair warning. Take away something they value and want, regardless whether the kid is sobbing and sad over it.
I don’t think physical punishment is necessary at all. But you gotta let them know who’s boss.
Of course, it’s much easier for me to talk about having never raised children of my own, but you bet your boots the kids I babysat very regularly for 10 years listened to me more than they ever listened to their parents.

My personal research cosists of Jewish profiling
(subjects from Skokie, Morton Grove, and Licolnwood) and Catholic (subjects from all of Chicago). I also would encourage you, Doctor (if, in fact, you are a Doctor) to do your own research, like Bhoov.
I am currently conducting research on Baptists and the Charismatics. (It doesn’t look good.)

Your observations are pretty accurate
We use timeouts as well, which can and do work to some extent, but only because they know if they act like the kids in your example, a whuppin’ is forthcoming!
And for reference, I grew up in a household of 4 boys and have 2 of my own, so I am not sure these rules apply to girls. I think I would have a hard time with that kind of discipline in that scenario.
The reason I have no respect for these players, especially Thome is this…any player you can put a shift on is useless.
I'd much rather see a chart of the parent's IQ's
And how their IQ level determines how often they physically harm children.
Just another person making money and getting their name out, from an ice cream sales / violence study, let me know when they actually put some thought in to the other variables.

Well, I think spanking kids is a means of discipline.
But, I don’t agree on spanking girls…and I mean this in the most sincere way. Most girls emotionally don’t forget things…my wife never forgets anything. Boys on the other hand let things slide off their back – really they are much easier to raise.
I am the only boy in my family and the oldest. My father used his hand in spanking me as a child many, many, many times. I loved my father to death, but he scared the living sh*t out of me if I misbehaved. Boys need this.
On the other hand I have two sisters. The older one being disciplined similar to me and the younger one being disciplined without any spanking.
The intelligence part is right on…as my youngest sister is a friggin genius and the older one is well, a good person for the most part but not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Emotionally, they are at totally opposite ends of the spectrum and think most of it has to do with how they were raised and spanked / not spanked.

My dad scared the living shit out of me (mom did too).
Not only was I a well-behaved child as a result and avoided getting into trouble throughout school years (was never interested in drinking or drugs or anything but good clean mischief), but I think I turned out pretty okay in the brain too and emotionally tough as nails (even if baseball makes me cry :)).
Each situation is different and that’s a big part of a parent’s job too – figuring out what discipline method is going to suit each child best, regardless of gender.
My mom used to wash my mouth out with liquid Dial not only when I cussed (which I quickly learned not to do after she washed my mouth out and prevented me from watching the long-anticipated premiere of “Flintstones Meet the Jetsons”…I did not swear again until I was 12 – true story), but also when I was at all disrespectful towards her or other adults.
Mild form of abuse, but I sure as shit learned how not to be disrespectful.

exactly
same thing happened with my wife with the swearing and dish soap, she still talks about how nasty that was. I never got that punishment, but I got the spanking and a few times the crack in the head (father has a few big rings he wears on his right hand).
It worked. Whenever my degenerate friends would be drinking, hanging out late, doing stupid sh*t, etc. I would think of that hand cracking me upside the head and the ringing in my ears. No thanks….I’m going home.
I turned out okay. Sure I rebelled for like a semester in College…but most of us did.

you don’t trade away productive players if you’re making all efforts to reach the playoffs.
Agreed.
I also didn’t like the, “we’re doing Thome a favor” spin that was put on that deal. They basically acknowleged that they sent Thome to LA so he would have a better shot at winning a ring.
