Who Will Be the Scapegoat for the 2009 Season?

Remember the rules.  You can't be someone who will be retained for the 2010 season.  So that eliminates the coaching staff and front office.  You also can't be someone who has an unmovable contract.  So Scott Linebrink will have to wait to take the fall for the 2011 season.  Essentially, you're looking at guys who are free agents to be or will be traded or are already gone.

Poll
Scapegoat?
A.J. Pierzynski. Crime? Watching Florida football, corrupting youth.
16 votes
Jermaine Dye. Crime? Sucking in the second half, likely due to lack of heart.
246 votes
Carlos Quentin. Crime? Got married, which weakens the legs and illustrates a lack of commitment to the team.
48 votes
Josh Fields. Crime? Not being good at baseball.
71 votes
Bobby Jenks. Crime? Fat, lack of commitment to his craft leading to ineffectiveness and injury.
107 votes
Jim Thome. Crime? Clogging the basepaths and the training room.
17 votes
Jose Contreras. Crime? Lack of pride.
50 votes
Brian Anderson. Crime? Wandering eye.

this isn't who/what should be blamed.

this is who will the white sox blame. logic and reason have nothing to do with it. nick swisher and co-scapegoats javier vazquez and orlando cabrera already tasted this for 2008.

"this is who will the white sox blame"

i voted for thome just for humor’s sake…actually, i don’t think thome, dye, count, or aj fit the bill of last year’s cohort, because last year’s cohort did have some problems or beef with ozzie at some point.

unlike last year’s cohort, dye, count, and aj served on the 2005 squad and thome was a class act.

although he was on the 2005 squad, i’m going with jenks if i voted again.

sure, it is in the satire section after all.

recall, though, that we didn’t really hear all that much about swisher being a bitch until late in the season (toby hall didn’t get thrown under the bus until after the season, iirc – though he’s a pretty minor character). we heard plenty about OC, of course, and javy, while not getting lambasted until towards the end of the season/playoffs, long had the ball-less tag attached. sometimes, these things are created, i mean revealed, after they’ve been kicked to the curb.

i also voted for thome for humor’s sake. but i guarantee we’re going to hear a whole lot this offseason – already have – about how the white sox need to “be more athletic” and “rely less on the home run” and “be versatile.” if that’s not at least indirectly implicating thome….

JD...

Because even though there’s plenty of blame to go around, and even though no single player or incident should be blamed for this debacle, JD was the one bat we could least afford to have go cold at the same time as Q’s. To have them both suck simultaneously was too much missing offense to overcome.

My vote WOULD have been Q, but at least he had the injury excuse.

Oops… I mean Jermaine. While I honor him for 2005, it is 2009, and nearly every AB of his post ASB was pure dog vomit. How many times did he kill an inning, fail to move a runner, GIDP to destroy a rally? You can call me a heretic, but BA would have been better at the plate than JD. Hell, DJ could done better.

toss up between JD and Contreras

but I chose Contreras. He gave the team no chance to win in all but 2 or 3 starts all year. JD had a stellar first half, while Contreras only had a stellar half to one actual game.

by shumway on Sep 28, 2009 2:37 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

JD in a sqeaker.

We have no idea if he complained to Herm (maybe he should’ve). The stone cold hitting in the 2nd half could not have come at a more inopportune time. IIRC, last year he didn’t swoon nearly as badly.

Can’t blame the bit players (BA/Count/Fields) who don’t play every day. Can’t blame Thome, since he was our best overall hitter. Can’t blame Jenks, as he didn’t cost us a lot of games. Can’t blame Q (though I would say his absence was felt more than JD’s 2nd half sucking) because of his injuries. And AJ has quietly (for him) probably had his best season as a Sox.

JD, by default.

Good poll.

Both had great seasons when the Sox were below .500. Both had problems delivering when it mattered.

Javy was more obvious, having had the opportunity in a couple of BIG

games down the stretch he pussed out (badly). AJ’s defense actually improved toward the end of the year (at least his throwing % did).

I was clearly AJ's fault.

Castro calls a perfect game the first time he catches Buehrle. You think that wasn’t noticed by the others? But no, AJ had to bitch and whine whenever he sat out so he could get his plate appearance money! Tore the team apart….

I think you have to disqualify JD after this Ozzie quote:
’’I’ve had a lot of good players and good people — but JD is in my top two of who I’ve ever managed,‘’ Guillen said. ’’I never managed a better guy, a better player. I hope it’s not the end for us, but I don’t know. I never saw a better pro than that kid — never, never. I love seeing him every day. He made my life very easy. I hope he comes back, but it’s not my call.’’

If this is "who will the Sox blame in the media" it's gotta be Jenks

Odds are he’ll be gone, and he has a checkered past already. The “he didn’t keep himself in shape” stuff and “he quit on the team” are there for the taking now. Jenks will likely be gone and the Sox can spin that as generating a more “professional” clubhouse atmosphere. They can’t spin that same line about Thome or JD very easily.

AJ is a tempting choice except I think they’ll keep him around. If they had played Flowers more down the stretch I’d be more tempted to think AJ will be flipped for an OF, but it looks like they don’t think TFlow is ready yet.

gold!
the man has pitched his heart out, and deserves to win, but his record of wins and losses is not good enough. and that is the bottom line.
Wins and loses should have nothing to do with the Cy Young award. A pitcher cannot control his team’s offense. C.C. gets the biggest run support of any of the Cy Young candidates. Greinke gets the least run support.
If C.C. pitched for K.C. he’d be lucky to have more wins than loses.

Let Pods

continue his magical season, accumulate some numbers. Let Dye play. Kotsay. Whomever. After further review, I understand Lillibridge being the only other real ss. There are other options in the outfield…..hell, it even makes more sense to try Nix out there again. He’s gonna have to be one of those super-utility types in the long run, so may as well give him an outfield start. Not Wise.

We've witnessed Pods ceiling and we know what we're going to get from Kotsay

Why risk further age related injury for those two than play scrubs? As larry and others have implied, there really isn’t anybody else down on the farm worth playing right now.

Are you fucking serious about Pods ceiling?

Did you see that double play he turned last night? Have you seen him scalding the baseball lately? And what are these age related injury risks you speak of?

haven't you seen his wife?

he could pop a groin at any time.

yeah i love that

Lilli can easily go 0-10 to close this season down and be the all-time suck.

We should be thinking of his upcoming arbitration case though he clearly doesn’t know how to win

you forgot Buehrle.

there are some who think MB should be shopped

particularly considering he achieves 10 and 5 mid-2010.

Seriously though, I can’t imagine they’d do that.

put it this way.

any other white sox pitcher with a similar resume and a similar contract would be talked about as prime trade bait this offseason.

At least JD had a great first half. Q was teh suckage all season long

I voted for Josh Fields

not him in particular, but to symbolize the absolute dregs we were rolling out onto the field the first couple of months. Fields. Lillibridge. The Goggles. Wise. Anderson.

Ok, looks to be about 6.

That’s about one month of good pitching out of six for a starter. so I still stand behind my pick.

How can your 4th starter be a scapegoat? Really.

So you think Zambrano has more value than Peavy? You are an idiot.
