Around SBN: Troubled Yankees Join Troubled Red Sox In Last Place

Having to leave the team in order to have surgery on Thursday in Philadelphia was not the way the second baseman wanted his 2009 season to end, let alone to have that last day with his teammates day cut short because of bad weather, but there was one more light work session with hitting coach Greg Walker in the batting cages for Getz, and then off he goes.
The lower oblique strain that put him on the 15-day disabled list back on Aug. 21 had still been bothering him, so Getz saw a specialist and a sports hernia was discovered. The plan was first to address it at the end of the season, but that plan went out the window now that the rest of the Sox schedule is basically meaningless.

Post-Roid rage?

HOUSTON (AP)—Former major leaguer Chuck Knoblauch has been charged with assaulting his common-law wife.

A judge set Knoblauch’s bond at $10,000 after he appeared in court Tuesday. According to a criminal complaint, Knoblauch’s wife told police he hit her in the face and then choked her at their Houston home on Friday.

Knoblauch’s attorney did not immediately return a telephone call Tuesday.

The 41-year-old former infielder is a Houston native and a four-time All-Star who played for the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals from 1991-02.

Knoblauch was one of more than 80 players who were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs in the 2007 Mitchell Report on baseball’s steroids era. Knoblauch later acknowledged using performance enhancers.

Do you guys really want the Olympics? WSJ (front page) reports "Nein!"
Mr. Daley, re-elected in 2007 with more than 71% of the vote, now has a career-low approval rating of 35%, according to a recent Chicago Tribune poll. In public meetings, citizens rail that he has become isolated, thin-skinned and autocratic. Only 47% of Chicagoans support hosting the Games.
Mr. Daley, asked about his falling approval ratings and concerns over cost overruns and corruption, shakes his head.
“You have to have vision,” the 67-year-old mayor said in an interview this month as he shuttled between appearances in the back seat of his black sedan. “You can’t start second-guessing yourself.”

The Olympics will be his Pyramid,

his Mausoleum at Hallicarnassus. He’s left his imprint on this city already – look at a movie set in Chicago just before he took office like"Thief", and look at the city now. It’s been completely transformed.

Great rulers have always used grand public works projects to seal their immortality. My favorite line is Augustus, “I found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble” – and I think this really defines Daley, Jr (and Sr). No one ever accused thim of being personally corrupt, you won’t find any shoeboxes stuffed with cash in his closet when he dies. His intentions are good, but his methods are very Machiavellian. If bringing his visions to fruition entails corruption and copious amounts of public funds, so be it.

seems to me

that the research has shown that the effect of an olympics is either negligible or positive. while i doubt the games are going to bring the $22.5 billion or whatever ridiculous number is cited, i also strongly doubt it will be a catastrophe (or even a net money loser in any respect). i frankly can’t say i care much whether chicago gets it or not.

by larry on Sep 30, 2009 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure it'll be a money loser

but it definitely will further transform the city. I’m just curious to see what Chicago looks like when they’re all finished. Say what you want about Daley being a hardnosed politician, which he is, but he has quite the aesthetic eye.

wrong. both games hosted in the U.S. were profitable (as Larry alluded to)

also, the so-called ‘barcelona effect’ is likely to take effect in chicago (basically as a result of an ‘underrated’ city getting publicity on a world stage).

Ueberroth in '84 (in LA)

and Billy What’s-His-Face in Atlanta made sure they were profitable (I didn’t want to argue with folks above). However, Greece to a major bath. One thing we Americans can do is market and have sponsors pay thorugh the nose. I’ll bet there will be a lot of pork, so breaking even would be a nice thing. But the lasting impact, I believe, will be quite positive.

by Chiburb on Sep 30, 2009 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions

After the fire, the area was rebuilt by established residents as well as newcomers like sausage king Oscar Meyer. An infamous resident was longtime Alderman Paddy Bauler, whose headquarters was located in a bar on the corner of North Avenue and Sedgwick. An enormous man weighing 300 pounds, Ald. Bauler presided over an empire of graft and corruption that included liquor, payoffs and Gold Coast whorehouses for more than thirty-five years. His famous quote, “Chicago ain’t ready for reform,” apparently still echoes through City Hall today.

actually, the vertical movment is larger. Looks decent to me. Can’t throw it 100 MPH any more, so the average declines, perhaps.

Fun stat of the day!!!!

If Zack Greinke goes 4 innings in his next start, gives up 30 earned runs, & records negative 43 Ks, he’ll have the same stats as Sabathia.

This comes from Michael Schur aka Ken Tremendous of Fire Joe Morgan fame (yes, that website is surely a more noteworthy accomplishment than writer/producer for "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation"):

Two points that the likes of SI’s Jon Heyman would like me to note: He’ll still have less wins than Sabathia and he doesn’t play on a contender. These are the two more important measures of pitching dominance.

And 2 of my ex-wives were naturally red-headed (and the 3rd dyed her hair to that color).

Present (and lasting) wife is brunette. Lesson learned.

Kiss'Em Goodbye: Chicago White Sox
Key stat: -24.5

That’s the combined VORP of White Sox center fielders, starting with that long-gone Opening Day platoon of DeWayne Wise and Brian Anderson, Scott Podsednik’s return engagement, all the way to “Blame It On” Rios. It’s also the second-worst single-position mark in any major league outfield, behind only the Mariners’ left fielders. For the sake of historical comparison, that unit-wide rate is worse than any single center fielder’s VORP of the last 50-plus seasons covered in the Retrosheet era, topping even Darren Lewis’ infamous 1999 season with the Red Sox (-24.1). Add in that Chicago’s right and left fielders weren’t exactly tearing up the league, and the White Sox outfield ranked 29th in production via MLVr, ahead of only Kansas City. When you’re not getting runs from your outfield, you’re going to have a hard time contending for anything but KC-style ignominy.

It needs to be noted, though, that the White Sox put up a .518 team Support-Neutral Winning Percentage, which ranked second in the American League. This suggests that White Sox starting pitching was doing its job better than all four playoff teams’ rotations in the junior circuit. While pitching might be whatever percentage of baseball suits your aphorism of choice, you don’t win if you don’t score.

i believe you can get this if you’re an espn insider, too.

by larry on Sep 30, 2009 1:59 PM CDT reply actions

huh?

Once again, the White Sox will probably go into next season as the AL Central’s best team, on paper.

Does that mean BP is gonna pick the Sox to win the Central next year, seeing as evaluating teams ‘on paper’ is what they do? Oh, and apparently we were the best team last year but they picked us to finish 4th, out of spite presumably.

they’re not a monolithic entity. amazingly, their writers even have names! and use the pronoun “I” when describing their opinions.

it’s doing a lot better. i’m heading back north friday to have a hand/wrist/arm specialist take a look at it and see if the provena down here completely fucked me over. there’s no pain really, just not full function which is pretty frustrating.

no fielding.

use WAR, if you like, to add in position and fielding. i don’t think the result is much different. and if you want to just look at a team’s inability to score – which was the primary issue for the sox this year – VORP does a decent job.

by larry on Sep 30, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

What...our outfield never happened!

if it did it was closer to half a million.

by thecip on Sep 30, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

don't know offhand.

but all the players who played the position extensively (swisher, griffey and anderson) were essentially replacement level or slightly above according to VORP so it was probably just above zero.

by larry on Sep 30, 2009 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought you might have a link to find it...but even if those players are above replacement, or hovering around replacement level, doesn't necessarily mean that they contributed much to the '08 Sox, right?

Just to give it a glance, I compared RBIs when playing CF for the main CFers, from both years. I’m aware there is more to VORP, but I just wanted an idea of how much worse our CF was this year in terms of RBIs alone.

2008
Swisher (70 games in CF) – 30 RBI
BA (57 games in CF) – 21 RBI
KGJ (32 games in CF) – 13 RBI
Wise (19 games in CF) – 6 RBI
Total – 70 RBI

2009
BA (54 games in CF) – 9 RBI
Pods (47 games in CF) – 18 RBI
Rios (35 games in CF) – 6 RBI
Wise (25 games in CF) – 4 RBI
Total – 37 RBI

it's a terribly imprecise measure.

you could have chosen about five other easily found stats and done much better. see link below, graph about 2/3 way down regarding correlation to runs created estimation. it’s older and likely needs some updating but it’s albeit elementary.

Let's see OPS then - perhaps less quaint.

2008
Swisher – .802
BA – .668
KGJ – .716
Wise – .826
AVG – .753

2009
BA – .587
Pods – .766

Wise – .552
AVG – .590

I can do dat.

2008 (with PA)
Swisher – .802 (268)
BA – .668 (170)
KGJ – .716 (118)
Wise – .826 (64)
AVG CF OPS – .753 (in 620 PA)

2009 (with PA)
BA – .587 (191)
Pods – .766 (197)
Rios – .456 (141)
Wise – .552 (85)
AVG CF OPS – .590 (in 614 PA)
