He'll really go apeshit if he doesn't start all 3 in Detroit.

I’m pretty sure he needs to start them at catcher to have 125 games started and pick up the remaining $50k in incentive bonus money.

Carl Crawford link : http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/09/crawford-open-to-longterm-deal-with-rays.html

Would a Jenks for Crawford deal be possible and/or make sense? I ask if it is possible because I know Jenks is arbitration eligible, but I don’t know if he can be traded before those proceedings. Possible future Crawford replacement Desmond Jennings performed well in AAA this year and Pena will be a FA after next season. Can the Rays afford to sign both Pena and Crawford to long term deals?

by BlakJakk on Oct 1, 2009 9:02 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

jenks is garbage

by Hatchetm on Oct 1, 2009 9:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They would trade Upton before Crawford.

But probably neither for Jenks.

by chisox2691 on Oct 1, 2009 9:36 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I just dont think they can afford to keep both Pena and Crawford. Pena should be more valuable

to them for his run production and protection in the lineup for Longoria. Closer was a huge problem for them the latter 3/4 of the season. I dont want to see Posednik and his happy feet in the outfield. Crawford could more than fill the production Pods provided this year at the top of the lineup and drastically help the pitchers with him and Rios manning LF and CF, respectively. Quentin in RF with Kotsay as the swing guy is a solid OF rotation. Jenks could get $8-9M this year which is ridiculous the way he blows saves and loses games at a ridiculous clip. Not Lidge ridiculous though, but who knows maybe next year is when he and Lidge are joined at the hip in bad closer conversations.

I think JR would OK a deal to bring CC here. Sign him at $10-12M for 4/5 yrs because his production would be invaluable, turning singles into doubles in front of Beckham would offset a possible drop in power numbers from the middle of the lineup. Speed and great defense assisting great pitching is exciting to watch. The fans should show up, especially when that production translates into wins. The speed guys will offset the supposed lack of power with power of their own. You could reasonably expect 10-15hr from CC and 15-25 from Rios. Alexei should be back around 20hr and Nix off the bench could knock out 15-20hr as well, if he doesn’t supplant Getz as the starter.

Ask Amy...

Dear Amy: I’m a female elementary school teacher, age 59, and I have a real problem with how the parents of my students dress. I dress very modestly, but I don’t think I’m a prude.

Although this has always made me feel uncomfortable, the past several years have been the worst. I’m talking about mothers who come to their parent conference dressed as if they’re going to a nightclub!

I find it offensive to have to view their half-exposed breasts and cleavage “down to there.”

Would it be appropriate to write a general note, asking parents to dress discreetly for the conference?

I’d even be willing to add that it’s not because the school has a dress code for parents, but because it would make me feel more comfortable.

They told you so - that's why they are so smug
Like always, hindsight is 20/20 but there’s a good chance if the predictors were offered a mulligan on their outlook on the White Sox, they would have taken it. Do you think given the opportunity, on August 22nd with Jake Peavy on his way back and the club at 63-60, would anyone stick to their 75-win prediction? Maybe the most stubborn but not many.
Sure, Williams’ blow up to the press was an emotional response to a season lost but based on the performance of his team over the last month, who can blame him? Heck, their 11-21 collapse is a run the Nationals wouldn’t consider okay. That’s saying a lot, isn’t it?

Thanks to the collapse, those who called for the White Sox to win 75 or less can breathe a sigh of relief that their nearly dead in the water prognostication was revived by a monumentally disastrous finish. Instead of taking the football and handing it to the referee after the hail mary touchdown, it seems at least a few predictors have taken it as an opportunity to ignore the collapse completely and just chalk it up as a lack of talent on the White Sox part. Oh, there’s that big fat "I told you so", too.

Cool, thanks. I agree with some of his criticisms and fully agree with his take on Joan. Was talking yesterday about how she is just like Peggy - but her overwhelming sexuality distracts from her sharp mind or creativity....

….to the point where she is everyone’s best and most collected servant, but never gets credit for it.

She wants what Peggy has (success-wise), and Peggy seemed to sort of envy what Joan had (in season 1, at least), sexuality-wise. But as you see the characters developing, it’s evident who will be the “happier” woman in the 60s.

Meanwhile Joan falls into her ‘assumed’ and devastating role as housewife to an unappreciative prick.

And at its best, Mad Men gets to things that feel original. Nowhere is this clearer than in its portrait of Joan, a kind of female character I’m not sure I’ve encountered before — an impressive woman doomed to unhappiness because she’s caught on the wrong side of history. Her fate is written on her flesh, the busty, full-hipped, Monroe-era body that fell out of fashion in the early ’60s and has yet to make a comeback.

Magnificently played by Christina Hendricks, Joan is smart, funny, sexually canny and supremely competent. She can play “C’est Magnifique” on the accordion or save a man’s life by applying a tourniquet as those around her are panicking. There’s just one problem: Joan has perfected the traditional career-girl strategy of getting a job, having some laughs, then landing a “good” husband — in her case, a doctor. Then she discovers that her husband isn’t what she dreamed, and even more unsettling, that the world is changing: Men will now hire women to do creative jobs in advertising. But because she’s played the sexy office manager so effectively, men will never hire her to do them, even if she’s more talented than the men are.

Caught between the past and the future, Joan is the show’s most complex and compelling figure. Warm and calculating, angry and ebullient, ravishingly sexy and distressingly backward about race, she’s no angel. But she is human.

With Joan, Mad Men comes closest to doing what it ought to do. It lets us understand how people actually lived and breathed during those years, rather than merely telling us what their lives meant and how cool the whole thing looked.

We should have a goddam thread for this discussion.

Fuck it, Dude... Let's go bowling.

It could be worse, you could be Rick Pitino or David Letterman – being extorted for not keeping your pants on, and then having it all made public.

Matchups are all pretty interesting

Even Detroit vs. Yankees…NY is kinda fucked in that if they choose the shorter series, they have to use 4 starters, or if they choose the longer series, they could face Verlander (1,4) and Jackson (2,5) twice on full rest. Shouldn’t come to that though.

NL looks pretty even too. Should be a good playoffs to watch despite no WSox.

Pick your poison

Detroit makes the huge upset and lazy sportswriters give us 2 weeks of “The city is rallying around their sports team despite sagging attendance”, or we get bludgeoned with the Yankees/Sox lineup.

by larry on Oct 2, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

huh, I hadn't realized that you or any of the other 'contributors' had been posting quality in excess lately.

I created a new thread because this one was two days old, took a while to load, and OBVIOUSLY people were reacting to the Olympics thing – whether you personally give a shit about it doesn’t really matter.

If there is no Sox-related discussion, is it so bad to have a fresh thread for everyone?

I don’t know how that has lowered standards more than any number of times that you have opted to just post a picture (with maybe 5 words of “original content”) as a recap thread, rather than stoop to a level below yours and just write a real recap.

I know it sucks as badly as a piss-soaked bowl of Cheerios, but I’m not going anywhere.
And I’ll be happy to pick up your recap slack next season… for the good of the community.

Fuck it, Dude... Let's go bowling.

You closed it too early, sir.

Poll has >120 votes. If you want threads hanging around getting gamey for 2-3 days I’d say that is an example of standards being lowered. We generally have at least one new one each day, even during the offseason.

But you know that. HSA = Ball of Yarn for the Cheshire Cat.
