Chuck Garfien's infuriatingly permalink-free SoxDrawer has posted an equally infuriating unembedable video interview with White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. Congratulations on earning the link, CSN, too bad it won't be useful to anyone once Garfien chooses to post something new.

It's well worth your click, even if what Reinsdorf has to say makes you dread the upcoming season.

Garfien also got the key quote

but kind of lost it in answering a bit about Thome:

Ozzie has made it very clear that he likes the team the way it is. He doesn’t want to have a full-time DH. If you’re going to hold a man accountable for him to do his job, you got to get him the team that he wants."

My bold. But also this:

“If we had an opportunity to get really better, the money would be there. But right now we’re about where we need to be.”

Barring a real opportunity, this is the team until it shows it can’t win enough. Can the Sox really shake off a 1-2 win buy at DH?

From the day Ozzie puts Vizquel at DH onward, I'm fine with him being fired

And I do think he will play Vizquel at DH. And that will be the stupidest move by a MLB manager this coming season.

The second stupidest move will be playing Kotsay at DH.

by hitlesswonder on Jan 13, 2010 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

Reinsdorf is a pretty decent business man if nothing else

I think he can understand the value of a DH if Thome comes in under 5 million as it looks like he will. If he doesn’t get Thome, I think it really is b/c Ozzie said this is the team he wants. It’d be one thing if the DH’s were in the 10+ range. I really find it hard to believe it’s a money issue.

by Grinder in Training on Jan 13, 2010 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

I have said over and over its not a money issue at all.

If they go as is, its because KW cannot convince Ozzie that’s what he needs. I think its a decent chance it gets done BUT if it doesn’t KW will NOT wait a long time for changes. Between Ozzie, KW and now Jerry the comments have been consistent in this regards. Frankly its the only reason Im not extremely worried about it.

Who knows. Maybe Ozzie pulls off some magic. Doesn’t mean it was the correct course, but it also doesn’t mean it won’t work out.

good lord. kotsay, jones and vizquel is becoming a reality. why in the hell would he want that over a proven DH in God damn american league!?!!! If they signed a nice power hitter for the middle of the order they would be contenders. Now its another season of pretending.

Kenwo4life=ratings

no

but we’re basically being put through an opportunity Kenny’s taking to teach Ozzie a lesson? i mean i appreciate the way JR put it, but this is not rocket science. it’s the fucking DH. it’s tough as a fan to accept that they aren’t going to do something that makes sense in order to keep Ozzie in the fold long term. i like him, but not enough to increase risk on a season where there’s really only one other obvious contender. next year, i think the Indians are going to be improved by Santana. that plus another starter and they’re in the conversation too.

i’m sure the Sox have run their cost/benefit stuff. i just can’t believe that this is what it spit out. it all makes enough sense to me up until this random ass loop they throw.

if i was ozzie i would be pissed too, but with exception to the 10+ games (is this right?) that are played in NL

fielding by a regular DH should be a non-concern, if you’re able to put the best possible hitter in that slot, perhaps Thome, shouldn’t we have more flexibility now (with all the other less than marginal moves made this offseason) for those games than in previous years

"shorter deal"

unless you think flowers is not going to be a major league catcher, i don’t see why AJ would sign a deal with the white sox. assuming aj has an aj year, he can get 2 years as a free agent and he’d be stupid not to. the white sox aren’t going to give him that. and if he doesn’t have an aj year, it’s probably going to be a precipitous decline after that. and aj doesn’t strike me as a guy interested in the mentor role. do not want.

carrasco to pirates
The Pirates and right-handed reliever D.J. Carrasco have agreed to terms on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

If Carrasco makes the team, he will make $950,000 in base pay plus as much as $250,000 in performance bonuses based on appearances.

the pirates currently have 40 man roster issues.

obviously, this is good for the pirates because they aren’t guaranteeing anything at this point should he not make the team. but it seems pretty clear that they expect him to and that it’s more of a procedural issue. and carrasco appears to be compensated for the potential risk of a non-guaranteed deal because that contract is for more money than i would have expected him to have gotten. it’s almost certainly more than he would have gotten from the white sox by going through arbitration.

jon garland and jose contreras were 2 of the top starters in 2005
jermaine dye was the right fielder and mvp of the world series in 2005
aaron rowand was the center fielder in 2005
scotty pods was the left fielder in 2005
juan uribe was the shortstop in 2005
joe crede was the 3rd baseman in 2005
dustin hermanson, cliff pollite and neal cotts were the top relievers in 2005

what do they all have in common? they are all gone. time for ozzie to go too. He can appear at soxfest in 2025 for the 20 year anniversary.

whats happened since then?

2006- choke job from hell
2007- awful
2008- Ozzie’s best season as manager… results in game 163 win.
2009- Absolutely awful.

Every year he preaches fundamentals and every year it doesn’t happen. Every year he threatens to quit. Every year the sox have a piss poor second half. His act wore out after the 2006 all star game. Time to move on.

i agree with you on a few points.

i’m tired of hearing about fundamentals and watching one of the worst teams in baseball at them too. threatening to quit doesn’t bother me, he just gets fed up with losing. i also don’t like the way he rips players in the media when most of what he says about them should be behind closed doors. As a game manager, i think he’s prettty good overall.

This whole rant from you is now extremely boring

Look the Sox have been 1 of the top teams in terms of outperforming projections in baseball with him at wheel. You don’t like Ozzie. I get it. But he’s not bad beacuse you say so. Even your list of 2005 factors work AGAINST your argument.

you know whats extremely boring?

your belief that everything the white sox do is sunshine and rainbows. get off of kenny and ozzie’s cocks… open your eyes and see that they aren’t as great as you think they are.

All that really shows me..

Is how bad that line up is. For some reason I thought they had a much better team. I guess that happens when you only hear about how great the Cubs are, instead of actually watching a game once in a while.

the dude quotes minor league HR totals from the late 90's

as a measure of Branyan’s “prodigious power”. Brilliant!
