Jared Mitchell, OF, Chicago White Sox
Bats: L Throws: L HT: 6-0 WT: 190 DOB: October 13, 1988

In terms of pure tools, Jared Mitchell was one of the premier talents available in the 2009 draft. The 23rd overall pick, he earned a $1,200,000 bonus. He could have gone even higher if he had concentrated on baseball in college: he also played football, and didn't turn his attention towards baseball full-time until last spring. As a result, he was rather raw as college players go. Even so, he made dramatic improvements last spring, as his LSU numbers above show: note the improved power production along with a much higher walk rate last year compared to 2008. Mitchell is an amazing athlete with excellent speed and plenty of physical strength. He doesn't show much home run power yet, but many scouts think he'll develop at least 10-15 home run power to go with 40-50 steal potential. Unlike most raw tools players, Mitchell works counts and draws plenty of walks, boosting his on-base percentage. His swing is very smooth at times, but he goes through phases where he can't make contact, giving him a high strikeout rate that could be an issue as he moves up. He is still learning how to steal bases, and scouts have sometimes criticized his outfield routes, although I think the latter issue is overblown and reviews on his glovework in the Sally League were positive. He's intelligent and coaches praise his makeup and work ethic. I really like Mitchell a lot, and while he has work to do refining his game, his upside is very high and I think he's already made a great deal of progress refining it. My main worry is that the White Sox will rush him before he's ready. Grade B.

wow. after reading this my opinion of Ozzie has sunk lower than it ever has before

if he wants to manage a national league lineup… go take over for lou. good lord. What in the hell does he mean the DH position is changing? is he retarded? how is it changing… you are allowed the opportunity to put one guy in the lineup that only has to do one job…. MASH. What an asshat.

well that just goes to show he's even more retarded

because playing in the Cell it would behoove you to be a home run team…. or at least a team that doesn’t have Juan Pierre in left Mark Kotsay at first and Omar Vizquel DH’ing.

This is a pretty big indictment on the organization

there have to be people in the front office who are aware of just how stupid an idea this is, yes? I’ve refused to believe that the Sox would be so dumb as to not sign Thome for what will likely be around or less than $3 million. This is a fucking joke.

by CWSKeith on Jan 21, 2010 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

I'm shocked

KW isn’t dumb. And yet, picking a DH on their ability to play the field is probably the stupidest baseball decision I’ve heard.

With the lack of power and OBP and people getting caught stealing left and right I think the Sox offense is going to absolutely atrocious next year. They are costing themselves a division title.

by hitlesswonder on Jan 21, 2010 7:54 PM CST up reply actions

No they arent nothing is permanent

If I had cash for what people “knew” what this offense would do from year to year I’d be rich. A rebounded Quentin and Rios could certainly provide enough offense.

to see him 'pressurize'?

Pierre was a really good player back in 2003 and 2004 with the Marlins, and his 2006 in Chicago was good as well. Nyjer Morgan and Brett Gardner might be decent contemporary comparisons. Now, like Scott Podsednik, he’s sort of an anti-Ichiro. His (past) speed and baserunning can convince a GM that he’s an ideal candidate to be a "center fielder put in the corner who will make up for his bat with his defense." Unfortunately, his range isn’t what it used to be, his arm can’t make up for it, and his speed is no longer adequate to sneak on base on dink hits, which means his flagging baserunnig skills also aren’t as useful as they used to be. I guess he’s in the AL Central now, so that means more games against middle infielders like, um, Yuniesky Betancourt.

You are taking it took much to the extreme guys.

Is it really that shocking that KW would give Ozzie a chance to prove it his way? Not really.
A. I don’t know if the initial battle is lost yet. Ozzie pretty much admitted that internally there is some talk about it. That’s why he didn’t flat out rule it out.
B. If they go this way. KW will have a some type of back up plan it would not extend season long
C. The chances of Jones working out is not zero and people seem to make that assumption

Id still be surprised

But the chances are not impossible. He did have 1 good half last year and is in a position to really prove something if he cares. I love Thome but people are too hung up on him. If Guillen insist that he wants some versatility out of the DH (roster spot-I know I know), find him better option. I want the left handed bat but hell maybe Dye does began to make sense if its him or nothing. Lets just stop the charges into the windmill.

Having a DH that can play the field is OK as long as he can hit too

I just think that having a Jone/Kotsay platoon is crazy. I know Andruw had a good half last season, but his last 1000 at-bats have provided a .700 OPS. And Kotsay isn’t any better.

So, if Ozzie wants a DH that can field give him Damon or Blalock or convince him Branyan can wear a glove. But get someone who can hit.

I know that acquisitions can occur in-season, but I’d rather see the Sox grab a guy on a cheap 1 or 2 year deal now than give up prospects in a trade.

by hitlesswonder on Jan 21, 2010 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

Case in point with the zero% stuff again.

by e-gus on Jan 22, 2010 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

That's why I'm still holding out some hope

I seem to recall a quote a few years back where Ozzie downplayed how much say he has in making the roster, something along the lines of, “KW makes the roster and I work with the guys he gives me.” And really, that’s the way it should be.

Even so, Ozzie shouldn’t shoulder all of the blame if the Sox don’t sign a real DH before April. KW is the guy who signed Kotsay to a $1.5 million deal — would he have gotten half of that on the open market? Besides that, though, there should be enough reasonable minds in the organization to be able to sit Ozzie down and lay out the myriad reasons why the current rotating DH plan is stupid as fuck. The main point I’d get across to Ozzie is the fact that adding Thome doesn’t preclude him from getting the bench guys a lot of at-bats. Odds are Thome won’t make it through the season completely unscathed, Quentin ain’t exactly a beacon of good health and even Konerko has been knicked up at various times over the past two years*. And hey, if it turns out that Andrew Jones is “IN THE BEST SHAPE OF HIS LIFE!” and Kotsay continues to hit like he did with the Sox, that’s a good problem to have.

And I’ll also restate that the “well, they’ll fix it in May or June” is unacceptable. As has been mentioned several times here over the past few months, when the division has been decided by one-game playoffs each of the past two years, you can’t afford to be taking needless gambles for the first 20-30% of the season.

*Hmm, I thought he missed time in 2010 but he had 600+ PAs and played in 150+ games.

by CWSKeith on Jan 21, 2010 8:42 PM CST up reply actions

May maybe but not June.

I could live with it if it happens. I hear you on the 1 game but the weight of whether Rios and Q rebound will overshadow it anyway. If the all star break rolls around and the Sox have been stubborn, I’ll be the first to say I was wrong. A more likely scenario is the DH production is barely adequate but other factors have the Sox in first anyway.

Right now, if i made my predictions the sox would have the worst staff of the 4 that make the playoffs. Yankees, Red Sox and Mariners all better. The staff is good enough to take us to the central title but there has to be a good offense come playoff time.

I’m still not convinced that I will predict the sox to win the central though.

This is kind of an indictment too:

“Here’s the problem for Guillen, though. He likes the 25-man roster in its current configuration, with the only remaining battles figuring to come down between Jayson Nix and Brent Lillibridge…”

by ExileDC on Jan 22, 2010 9:33 AM CST up reply actions

maybe.

i suppose it depends upon how much said players play but i can see why ozzie would want someone who can pinch run and potentially play CF instead of nix.

by larry on Jan 22, 2010 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

Except we'll be guaranteed of seeing Lillibridge starting at least once a week on Ozzie's shitty lineup day.

Don’t laugh, but if Ozzie wants someone to pinch run and play CF, wouldn’t De Aza better fill that role?

by ExileDC on Jan 22, 2010 10:48 AM CST up reply actions

shitty offense, good defense.

seem rather like the same player to me.

by larry on Jan 22, 2010 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

I guess that's where I disagree.

Nix has substantially more power, comparable speed, and has shown at least some ability to hit Major League pitching. Lillibridge just sucks. On the one hand, this is probably like arguing over the world’s tallest midget (and Nix will probably strain his labia in ST and make this argument moot). On the other hand, given Ozzie’s fetish for playing with his lineup, we’re likely to see this guy for at least one start a week.

by ExileDC on Jan 22, 2010 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

they do not have comparable speed. not even close.

people would have said essentially the same thing about nix last year at this time. i think lillibridge will make similar adjustments to whatever nix made. they’ll both have fine careers as bench players.

by larry on Jan 22, 2010 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

OK, but that's just speculation.

Right now, based on what we have seen, Nix has pretty clearly shown himself to be the better ballplayer.

by ExileDC on Jan 22, 2010 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

What?

You’re essentially saying that a player with no demonstrable success in the majors is as likely to put up the same numbers as someone who at least has shown some success as a major league hitter.

by ExileDC on Jan 22, 2010 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

so.

any projection is speculative. perhaps mine is moreso but nix is not some supremely talented player who has a large margin for skill deterioration or a long track record of production. the list of players who put up similar numbers as he did in 300 PAs and then fell off the earth is not exactly short.

by larry on Jan 22, 2010 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with that.

But isn’t there a greater likelihood that Player A will repeat his performance than Player B will perform in a way he’s never done before? I’d rather take my chances with Player A unless Player B is some supremely talented player with a high ceiling (which Lillibridge is not).

by ExileDC on Jan 22, 2010 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

i would imagine.

you asked my opinion of nix.

That is not a nail in the coffin for the whole DH thing. Though Ozzie would have to do a lot of back spinning now if Thome is signed. If Ozzie wants the flexibility of an NL line up, let him go coach there and grind out a season in the senior circuit. The DH is one of the reasons the AL is far superior to the NL. If a guy needs a day off, then sit him. Just don’t do it every Sunday for every key position player at the same time you idget. I won’t miss Vizquel’s/Jones’s/Kotsay’s bat when they are on the bench most days as much as I’ll miss a true DH’s ability in the Cell to turn a game around with a homer or two.

Really, if Rios and Q have all-star quality years I would expect this team to compete hard for a division title. So, it can happen.

I just don’t get punting on the DH position when offense is a need.

There is virtually no chance the 10 team pitches like the 05 team, for two reasons: Politte and Cotts.

one would probably put better odds on the current white sox staff performing 'otherworldy'

thing is, the 2005 staff actually did it. while not out of the question, it’s unlikely you’d see that performance matched or exceeded.

Aren't you overstating this a bit Lar?

I understand they were great and had an “otherwordly” playoff performance, but the combined pitching staff had a 24.2 WAR. I’d hardly say that is unlikely to be match or exceeded this year.

One of the major factors of such production is having 4 pitchers

throw 850 innings. That makes it easy on almost any bullpen with decent arms. The Sox have decent arms in the bullpen. As long as there is not a major injury, this 2010 staff will battle and I believe beat that 05 staff.

Whew!

Brent Lillibridge won’t be attending this weekend’s SoxFest, but White Sox hitting coach Greg Walker is pleased that the struggling utility player is working on his revamped swing.

Lillibridge will fly from his off-season home in the Seattle area next week to join Carlos Quentin and Walker in Southern California

Lillibridge needs to cut down his high strikeout ratio to have any chance of making the Sox’s opening-day roster. He does have the versatility to play several infield and outfield positions, but his lack of contact prompted the Sox last season to use Jayson Nix as the primary backup shortstop.

‘’I was impressed that he (Lillibridge) looked in the mirror and said, ’I’m doing something wrong,’ ‘’ Walker said. ’’Changes had to be made.’’

But his sinker has always been good (2.64 GO/AO at ASU) and his slider is average enough. With a good change up, Sauer can be just as good as Jon Garland ever was.

But, here’s the thing, you could do so much more good for people if you are a successful professional baseball player. You would have millions of dollars you could put towards whatever religion it is, and help so many more people.

If you really want to do good and be a servant of your lord, don’t you think using your god given abilities to help the most people possible is the best way to do that? Look at Tim Tebow or some other obnoxiously religious athlete. You can play sports and help people in the name of religion.

I'm not saying to be famous and rich

For his own sake. But because he can help more people if he is. Obviously a guy who is a priest doesn’t want to be rich or famous for himself. But you can save more people if you are those things. It’s selfish to only worry about yourself, which is what he’s doing. It’s selfish to turn down the opportunity to get more money and fame and be in a position where you can help more people.

I’m not saying he should keep the money he makes, or live the life of an average famous person. I’m saying he should get money to give it away, and get fame so he can attract people to his causes. I don’t know what’s convoluted about that.

by Grinder in Training on Jan 22, 2010 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Money and fame corrupt people. Furthermore, both of these things can quite easily ruin people's lives.

You cannot just blindly assume that for him to get rich and famous would benefit his “mission” or “purpose” or whatever.

He may be able to counsel and guide people so effectively without either of those, that he will help more people, in non-monetary ways, by pursuing this calling right now.

Obviously the guy feels strongly about his purpose if he is able to turn down the opportunity for money and fame in America, when our culture so ridiculously values both. And to go into something that is so notoriously un-fun! That takes gall. I wouldn’t dangle the word “selfish” anywhere near this guy.

He’s not Tom Cruise (look at all the great things he’s paid for, I mean, done for his cult). Maybe he doesn’t want his religion and faith to appear a publicity stunt down the road.

I'm not saying he should do it for the money or fame for himself..

It’s not like I’m like how do you turn down a nice house!!.. no.
I get that, but the point is that money can be used for good.

If you have money, you can do more. Sure it could turn out a spectacular failure. But that’s life. Him being a poor priest could also just as well not work out. Poverty leads to people to do plenty of awful things just as well as being wealthy does.

Your life can be ruined just as easily if you don’t have money. But if you do have it, you can help more people. I don’t know how you can argue otherwise. Yes.. it could be detrimental. I just feel the positives of making it to the big leagues out weigh the negatives. That’s my opinion.

Using Tom Cruise as your example, is like me using some poor priest who raped a kid as my example of why he should play baseball. That’s bullshit. Look at Danny Weurffel, look at Tim Tebow, plenty more guys that aren’t like Tom Cruise then examples of guys that are.

Man is this discussion far afield...

That being said, there’s quite a difference between believing you can save someone’s soul or improve them spiritually, versus some kind of brick-and-mortar/food pantry-type assistance. And there’s also a difference between the direct human contact of personally preaching, hearing confession, evangelizing etc. and just investing your money in some kind of foundation to spread the word through other people.

And dont’ forget, unless you’re Michael Jackson, it’s also harder to molest little boys when you’re a high-profile millionaire.

I used him as an example of a guy who got fame and fortune first; and then turned into a laughingstock of a spokesperson for his religion, no matter how much money he gave or attention he drew to it.

Money CAN help people, yes. duh. I won’t argue that money doesn’t help people.

But so can devoted time.

And he chose to devote his time and life, over being able to sign a check over to a charity someday with a big shiny famous grin.

There are plenty of rich celebrities doing this already.

I guess that's where we don't see eye to eye.

And my biggest problem with religion. Saving souls is great and all, but I’d rather make someones life better while they are still here, instead of hoping that it works out for them when they are dead.

Not to mention, I still think you can save a lot more souls if you are someone that people look up to, like a pro athlete. Is it stupid? Yes.. but people love athletes. Sure, he could easily fail, but there’s a decent chance he could be successful. And if he is, he could reach a lot more people then he ever would as an average priest. With money and fame you can save a lot more souls. Doesn’t seem right, but that’s how it is.

by Grinder in Training on Jan 22, 2010 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with you

Just look at what Tim Tebow has been able to do before getting any money. Love him or hate him, he’s gotten people to talk about Christianity in forums where it’s not a natural conversation. My point was the reason for becoming a priest is salvation first, good works second. So, from the kid’s point of view, more moeny wouldn’t affect his primary mission but more lost time would.

The point of view makes since when you consider the priest focusing on salvation is looking at eternity or “saving the forest,” wheras the priest looking at good works is looking to improve the temporary life or “pruning the tree.”

In that sense, I see why he did it, admire him for it and agree with T-dogg, I probably couldn’t have.

I probably should have kept my opinion to myself. People already think I promote drunk driving, adding selfish hater of religion probably wasn’t the best move. I understand what everyone is saying, just my opinion in the end, it’s selfish to turn down an opportunity to help as many people as a professional baseball player can.

I don’t believe we will ever see eye to eye on this one, just as I will never agree with those who think the WR should have been in jail longer for his crime. Even though I go to church (probably only once a month to be completely honest), and have never driven drunk, I still can’t justify in my mind the other side of either of these arguments.

Poetic Justice would dictate that...

Thome would launch a solo homer off Peavy in the 8th to win game 163 1-0

and if Kenny won't let him do it here

The Twins will take him up on it. Cut myself off earlier

he's choosing poorly then.

the twins don’t hit home runs. in their home park, balls that leave the field on a fly are ground rule doubles.

anyone need a house? i hear thornton's is pretty nice.
Do you have confidence in Scott Linebrink bouncing back in 2010 to pitch like he did in the first half of 2008 or 2009? Who is the funniest guy out of all the White Sox relievers?
— Tom, Chicago

If I was a betting man, I would put my house on it. Scott is a great pitcher, a great competitor and a strong individual. The rough patch he had last year is going to be a learning experience that I think all pitchers go through at one time or another in a career. I am a true believer that whatever doesn’t break you makes you stronger. He is going to have a huge impact on our bullpen and team this year.

The funniest guy to me in the bullpen is actually not a pitcher. Bullpen catcher Mark Salas makes me laugh every day. He is the same person day in and day out and does a lot for our team that most people don’t recognize.

What do you think of the 2010 White Sox and the changes made by Kenny Williams? Wouldn’t Jim Thome look good in that lineup?
— Mary, Phoenix

The moves made so far have been great. A lot of people forget that we made some huge moves during last season.

With the addition of Jake Peavy, our rotation is not getting the credit it deserves. And the veterans we have added this year are going to be great for our team throughout the year.

Mary, Thome would look great in our lineup. I like the possibility of around 30 homers and 90 RBIs.

July 23rd should be abolished from the calender.

here's argument even ozzie can understand:

Baker RHP/Slowey RHP/Blackburn RHP/Pavano RHP
Verlander RHP/Porcello RHP/Scherzer RHP/Bonderman RHP/Galarraga RHP
Greinke RHP/Meche RHP/Hochevar RHP/Bannister RHP/Davies RHP

just give the Masher all ABs against those pitchers and we’re good to go.

it's certainly a good argument for a LH batting slugging DH

I’m just not sure Thome is that guy in a platoon where he sits against LHP.

He would be cheap for his stats (provided he would maintain them sitting out a significant number of games) though I think.

Best game I ever attended was the 163rd game last year in 2008.

i heard an interview with buddy bell on white sox weekly on the score a month or two ago and he said mitchell throws to the correct base. that’s a plus.

I know them when I see them. This kid – he’s special. As long as he stays healthy we may have something special.

Wrigley Field is a postage stamp shithole. It reeks of piss worse than R. Kelly’s underage girlfriend. It’s falling apart faster than Amy Winehouse. Their fans are denial-addled jagoffs of lowest stripe.
